River Of Souls(KY) proved she was the real deal, owning the stretch in her first stakes race, to lead the field home by three and a half lengths in this week’s Prophetic Blade Special. The up and coming young filly made it four in a row in only her fifth career start, posting a career best 96.9 speed figure, which is also a new record for this yearly event. She left little doubt that she could, in fact, carry her allowance form over to stakes, and the purse here more than doubled her career earnings, taking them to the $58140 mark in her five starts. The stakes win puts her name in lights in the three year old female Turf Classic division, taking her to a rank of 158, and it also pushed her into the top 100 in the Turf Long division, giving her a rank of 79 after the race. Payouts were fairly nice at the betting windows for this tight field. The winner paid $11.60 $6.20 $3.50 across the board. She also contributed to a $58.10 payout in the exacta, and a nice $324.30 for trifecta bettors.

The break was a lot tighter than expected, with four horses vying for a piece of the early lead. Shichinin(KY) managed to get a nose out front, but there were still four contenders packed within a half length as the fillies crossed the first call. The early battle cost her though, and as they headed towards the halfway mark, race favorite Apophis(KY) edged past, trying to shake off the determined pursuit her competitors. As they crossed the halfway mark, Apophis(KY) managed to gain three quarters of a length, with Test My Patience(AUS), Shichinin(KY), and River Of Souls(KY) all nose to nose right on her tail. The second half proved to be a duel of two, though, with Apophis(KY) and River Of Souls(KY) pulling away from the back, heading into the stretch head to head, nearly four lengths ahead of the next closest runner. It was River Of Souls(KY) that had all the energy left down the stretch, though, and she quickly pulled away, dispelling all doubts as she drove to the wire, putting three and a half lengths on second place Apophis(KY). Test My Patience(AUS) got the third place nod in a photo finish with Celebre For Kirby(AUS), eleven lengths out at the wire.
