Look for TETE IANODA to comfortably “stalk” the early pacesetters within a few lengths of the lead and start making his move around the 6-furlong call. He already has over $2 million in earnings and it’s hard to imagine a scenario where TETE IANODA won’t add to that, the 9-1 odds seem somewhat generous!

trainer jacobsson’s comment … “This horse has been a great addition to my stable and posted some great figures last year. ELITE AIR is as good as he can be, it’ll be interesting to see how far behind he is at 4 furlongs, given the lack of blazing early speed, I’m confident ELITE AIR will acquit himself well”!

14

9

SHAMZAAM

PACE %

7.13%

SPEED %

6.83%

CLASS %

14.80%

BET VALUE

124.10%

residence

Hoosier Racing

RANK

7

RANK

6

RANK

2

RANK

7

comment … not too many Sim Grade-1 Stake winners are bred from sires that cost less than 50 bp’s, but that’s exactly who trainer mlafort1’s 5-year-old gelding SHAMZAAM is. The extremely modestly bred son of sire Elzaam (who’s breeding share is selling for 32 bp’s as I write this), won the Grade-1 Jolly Summer Camp last November and also has a victory in the Grade-3 Big Kahuna Cup earlier in 2021 on his resume’. Distance is no issue for SHAMZAAM as he’s won Stakes from 6 1/2 to 10 furlongs. Look for SHAMZAAM to settle mid-pack early, he usually starts making a steady charge to the front from the 5-furlong pole. SHAMZAAM has earned a paycheck in his last 8 starts, look for that trend to continue in the Jaguar!

trainer mlafort’s comment … “What a pleasant surprise SHAMZAAM has turned out to be, he’s got long distance stayers Shamardal and Monsun in his bloodlines and it seems like he still wants to run, even past the wire”!

15

10

TRIPAROUNDTHESUN

PACE %

2.04%

SPEED %

5.54%

CLASS %

0.22%

BET VALUE

62.15%

residence

DelPenn National

RANK

15

RANK

14

RANK

15

RANK

15

comment … trainer neworleansmafia’s 6-year-old-gelding TRIPAROUNDTHESUN, has the look of a true distance runner. On the surface, the son of sire Frankel’s record looks spotty, but on closer inspection, it’s obvious that TRIPAROUNDTHESUN does his best running after the 6-furlong call. He had 2 really good 2nd place efforts in 2021, the Grade-1 Eddie O Cap and the Grade-2 Euro Grand Prix, in both those contests he made a “huge” late move, from well out of it, and just fell short of winning. It’s likely that TRIPAROUNDTHESUN will be near the rear of the field early, it’s also likely he’ll make a “strong” late rally, the question is will he be close enough to find the wire 1st! Closing hard in the stretch!

trainer neworleansmafia’s comment … “closers can frustrate you, but the reality is TRIPAROUNDTHESUN has been in the money in 18 of his 25 starts, so if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it”!

16

17

GAIUS JULIUS

PACE %

7.81%

SPEED %

6.62%

CLASS %

5.21%

BET VALUE

146.51%

residence

Universal Racing Club

RANK

5

RANK

8

RANK

6

RANK

6

comment … trainer spqr6th has advanced 4-year-old-colt GAIUS JULIUS’S career very nicely, attested by the fact that the son of sire Dubawi already has earned $365K. After posting a nice win in the URC 2000 Guinea’s Open Stake, in only his 5th start, GAIUS JULIUS was thrown to the “wolves” against Grade-2 Stake runners. Gaius JULIUS acquitted himself very well earning a 2nd place finish in both the Grade-2 St. James Tavern and the Grade-2 Celebration. The finish in the Celebration was extra impressive given the fact that race was his first try against “older” horses. His last race was a winning effort vs. Allowance nw4L that saw him post a career best 119.630 speed figure. GAIUS JULIUS will position mid-pack early and wear down the early speed. All but 1 of his races have been at 8 furlongs but Gaius Julius has shown good stamina late, it will be interesting to see what effect the extra furlong will have. Interesting longshot, can’t dismiss his chances!

trainer spqr6th’s comment … “I gave GAIUS JULIUS a 3-month rest after his Grade-1 Queen Liz effort, I like the way he responded last race, especially drawing away in the stretch, he looked like he could run all day”!

There you have it sixteen Equinic’s hopefuls. The interesting side story of the Jaguar is how the early pace of the race will be contested, there’s a real “void” of “blazing” early speed so it should get really interesting at the 6-furlong call. Maybe one of the early “stalkers” can control the pace and wire the field or just maybe the field will bunch up entering the stretch where the late “flyers” and grit and stamina will determine the outcome!
