One may be a bit of surprise to you. In all of the races that I’ve written up for the BTB and that is a substantial number, I’ve never had a race where every participant was bred to a retired mare. I thought that this might be the first one but EXTERMINATE is our only horse entered without a “Mommy” so to speak. It was close but not quite. The other big story here is the fact that it looks like we are going to continue to see rain in Dubai. The course is a mess right now and doesn’t look to be getting any better and that should really throw a wrench into the plans of many of these trainers. Most of these youngsters have never run on an off track and no one really knows how they will react. It could be a mud wrestling match for the winner with no real idea of who will overcome that obstacle. So throw out the Morning Line and it could be anyone’s race. One other side bar to the race is the fact that we have some of the best known trainers in the Sim with an entry in this race. That always makes it fun, it is great to race against the best in the business. One way or another, rain or not, the crowd will be crazy and the racing may match so let’s take a look:

<PP#1>

1 – CRAZED(KY)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

10/1

MalekFarms

16.6%

T.Tippett

51 – 0 – 3 – 6 – 0%

103.40

$113,774</T>
127</T>

(EMPIRE MAKER x FORTY NINER x STORM CAT GOLD out of TRAVIS BICKLE) One of only four horse that has performed on Sloppy tracks in the race, this beautifully bred colt showed last time out that he loves the mud. He ran his best race and won going away with a sizzling 103 SPF in the rainy REVIRADO CHALLENGE over nine panels. That was his first Stakes win in five tries but has to really put a smile on the faces of both trainer MalekFarms and the well known AFC Stables. Whether that race was a three year old coming of age or one that just found out that he really likes an off track, he has a very real chance here of stealing a spot in the Bluegrass. One worry is jockey Tippett who is still looking for his first win in over 50 races of trying this year. This will be her first time on an off track which is unfortunate as I think she has a chance to sneak in there on a fast track. She is a deep closer that may have a problem slogging through the muck. She is ridden by McNabb who has been riding like they are all through muck this year as he has disappointed his backers on his mounts this year. Unfortunately for trainer DarthMaul and my boss’s SnowChief Stables, he won last time out so if his form holds true he won’t hit the circle this time. It will be his first time out on the sloppy stuff as well and it is hard to predict how he will react to that problem. Fortunately for this team they have Cassell in the leather and he is a jockey that knows how to overcome this sort of thing. This colt ran his best SPF with a 99 last time out and he looks to be ready with his come from behind style but I’m afraid to back him with the unknown reaction to the mud and his bounce back history. <PP#5>

5 – HIPPIE GRASS(ENG)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

19/1

Jockster2

7.1%

Q.Belfatto

35 – 1 – 5 – 4 – 3%

99.75

$ 123,498</T>
83</T>

( GENEROUS(IRE) x RAINBOW QUEST x DEVIL’S BAG out of FAST AS A FEATHER) At first glance you might wonder if this chestnut colt is ready to run with the favorites in this race. As a matter of fact he is getting no love from the Morning Line at all. I guarantee that trainer Jockster has a big grin on his face this week though as the rain continues to pour down. He knows that this colt is a “mudder” with a perfect two for two record in the muck. Granted those wins were both against smaller and less talented fields than this crew but nonetheless it certainly gives pause for hope for the JPritchett Stables that they could possibly have a runner in the Bluegrass Derby this year. Jockey Belfatto is holding the reins and he has only one win this year in limited action, that certainly won’t help the cause. We will have to watch this colt and see if he can get enough speed to compete in this race on his beloved mud. <PP#6>

6 – LUCKY’S MASH(ENG)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

14/1

OhioRacing

24.3%

V.Byrd

32 – 2 – 0 – 5 – 6%

97.65

$92,830</T>
115</T>

( WITH APPROVAL x KRIS(GB) x DAMASCUS out of DANDY DELIGHT) Until his last race, this beautiful light grey colt had been on a nice roll with continued improvement and seven straight on the board. He is an extremely deep closer that may have a bit more trouble catching up against more talent but looks like he should be able to compete. This will be his first trip in the mud for trainer OhioRacing and if his one turf race is any indicator he may be able to handle it. He is running under the colors of the leader of the Ohio Rez, Mr. Lucky and will be ridden by Byrd in the race who is having one of his worst statistical years of his fourteen in the saddle. He told me, “Officially, Jesus Walks is off the Derby Trail. However, this week’s races came up very limited in places I can run and prep him for the long-range goal of the Cosmopolitan Handicap on Memorial Day weekend. This field seems less tough, plus the slop can only help him train better for that race two months down the line. But even if he wins, I don’t think the Derby will be his next start. In fact, his next race is scheduled to be the Derby TRIAL, instead. I’m not trying to stop anyone from getting to the Derby in this “lock” race, but my options for what I’m trying to do with the horse are limited, and I’m not prepared to turn him back to a mile just yet. I’m not that enthusiastic about him getting nine furlongs, but one way or another, I’m thinking of my long-range plan.

If he wins, I’m probably still not going to the Derby with him. But unless he really loves the muck in Dubai, I don’t think I have to worry about it. I expect that he’ll go to the Derby Trial off this effort ready to score big, and prepared to do great things through the rest of the spring.”

So there you have it, even if he wins he may pass on the Bluegrass. They have a lightly raced colt that has never raced on the dirt but is number eight ranked on the turf in his five races. He is a Grade I winner at this distance and many times good turf runners do well in the mud. Could this team sneak in here and steal a spot in the biggest dirt race of all? They may be hampered by the anchor that jockey Carpenter has become this year with his dismal stats. This colt certainly knows how to win and he is loaded with talent but it remains to be seen if he can translate all of that speed on the green stuff to a win in the deep brown stuff. <PP#10>

10 – PANTALAIMON(KY)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

10/1

BunSay

19.3%

J.Cool

36 – 2 – 4 – 3 – 6%

96.75

$ 79,110</T>
169</T>

( SMARTY JONES x DEPUTY MINISTER x STEPHEN GOT EVEN out of DEMON SOUL) This colt is obviously named for the Daemon in the “His Dark Materials” trilogy and is known for changing forms, ranging from a leopard to a dragon, but his favorite forms are a snow-white ermine, a moth, a wildcat, and a mouse. It remains to be seen if he can change back into the colt that won his only race on a sloppy track in the MINE DEVASTATION BONANZA Stakes last November for trainer BunSay and the Super Stables. He will have to overcome the evil ridings of jockey Cool who seems more like he’s been riding dinosaurs this year than horses with his poor stats. This colt is a bit of an enigma with an up and down career in both Stakes races and off tracks. He looks to have the talent but like his namesake, he keeps on changing.<PP#11>

11 – EXTERMINATE(ENG)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

12/1

YoungGroup

18.9%

T.Miller

36 – 5 – 2 – 1 – 14%

100.58

$ 106,110</T>
67</T>

( RED RANSOM x FUSAICHI PEGASUS x RAISE A NATIVE) As mentioned earlier, this is the only colt in the race that hasn’t been bred from a retired mare. His nice pedigree is all his own. To races back, this colt ran a sizzling triple digit SPF then bounced a bit last time out with a ninth place finish in the GIII TOMMY WAYNE JOHNSON Stakes well behind a couple of other horses in this race. Trainer YoungGroup is certainly hoping that race was an aberration and he is ready to get back to his more consistent finishes on the board. Jockey Miller has been having one of his best years amongst his fourteen of experience and will be proudly wearing the colors of the Tees Stables from Australia. If this colt can get it back on track he will still have to contend with the off track for the first time in his career. Lots of questions with this colt that hope to be answered in this race. <PP#12>

12 – BLUEGRASS MYSTERY(KY)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

9/1

Correction

27.8%

B.Friedrich

27 – 3 – 1 – 1 – 11 %

102.94

$ 111,100 </T>
114</T>

( BLUEGRASS CAT x MINESHAFT x SADLER’S WELLS out of INTO THE DARKNESS) After a solid but undistinguished career as a two year old, this colt seemed to have turned on the switch around Christmas of last year. In his last three races he has two wins and a third and one of those wins was on an off track although admittedly it was in an allowance and only on a GOOD rated track but had a nice 96 SPF. Last time out he threw a 102 SPF and may be ready to really make some noise in this three year old campaign. Trainer Correction and the famous DixieDotco Stables would like nothing better than to see him make a whole lot of noise here. He has Friedrich in the leather and he’s been capable if unspectacular this year. This team has all the making of pulling a bit of a surprise in this race. <PP#13>

13 – PYRALIS(KY)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

10/1

KBSweet

12.0%

S.L.Ledwith

202 – 39 – 42 – 20 – 19 %

100.05

$ 1,075,460 </T>
9</T>

( BANDINI x FOREST WILDCAT x WILD AGAIN out of HOLLYWOOD CATFIGHT) Popular trainer KBSweet has had a ball with this award winning colt. He narrowly missed winning both the World Cup and Breeders Bowl last year with second place finishes in each then dispelled any thoughts of a sophomore slump with a GIII win in the SILVER FENCE DERBY with a triple digit SPF earlier this year. He has more than a $million in earnings and a top ten ranking to flash around for the Keely Stables and their green and white silks. He is a mid pack stalker that may be able to stay ahead of the late closing crowd in this race. He will be facing an off track for the first time but has the gaudy stats of jockey S.L.Ledwith to help him out in that regard. You certainly can never count this colt out in any race he enters and Keely would love to see him lock up a spot in the Derby early. <PP#14>

14 – INDY PROSPECTOR(FL) </

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

7/1

MayFlowers

24.8%

D.Lakencher

107 – 21 – 10 – 14 – 20 %

99.54

$ 578,530 </T>
32</T>

(INDY KING x BROAD BRUSH x MR. He has finished first or second in nine of twelve races with two Graded wins and two additional Stakes wins but seems to like the shorter distances better. Trainer Mayflowers and the Fortune 500 Stables are really trying to get this guy into the Bluegrass and surely hope here that he takes to the off track which he has never run on previously. He is just outside the rankings to get into the big race and need something to happen soon to move up in the rankings. They have Lakencher in the irons and he knows how to bring them home. I worry about both the distance and the mud with this colt but perhaps he can pull a big surprise from the outside post and get his owners through to Derby week.

Morning Line = 7-14-4-9-12
Paz Picks = 1-9-7-13-5

With the weather forecast I am throwing out my Daily Racing Form and really going out on a limb with my picks.
