It may only be a small field gathered at Queensland this week for The BARB’S NUREYEV Special Stakes but amongst the ones who have made the start, there look to be a couple who are destined for bigger and better things down the track. On breeding, some of these may be looking for a soft lead into some of the Oaks races coming up. The race is over 8.5F on the turf. Lets take a look at the contenders…

1. BELLY DANCE (dowelly stable) 2/1 ~ A nice enough Mr Greeley filly with plenty of stamina on the dams side. Comes into this with a 50% strike rate with 4 wins from 8 starts and just a tick over $100k in the bank. Met a slightly better field than this last time out when she finished 3rd but was well beaten by 5.5 lengths. This looks a touch easier so look for her to be in the finish and to give the favourite a run for her money.

2. ALYDARZAPPER (xssessiv stable) 7/2 ~ Beautifully bred Ghostzapper filly with a record of 3 wins from 8 starts all on the dirt and $142,000 in her kitty. Had been doing everything right until last start when she was stretched out over 9F and appeared to tire badly in her toughest test to date. First time on the turf will be her biggest challenge considering her breeding mainly points towards dirt. It will be interesting to see how she handles it.

3. MOVING IMAGE (weller2) 7/1 ~ This Tiger Hill filly has aquited herself well with 3 wins from 6 starts but is yet to taste any success above allowance level. Her 2 appearances in stakes comapny have resulted in 2 unplaced efforts finishing mid field in both. Tuned up for this with a 3.5 length win in an allowance race last start but needs to take the next step.

4. SENORITA HANAA (mrrx7) 7/5 ~ This filly is the star act in this field having already tasted success at G2 level and finishing 2nd at G1 level. With over $500,000 in career earnings it appears she is line for more success in the future. Although an upset is a possibilty, given the quality of some of the other fillies, I expect her to beat this lot if anywhere near her best.

5. GLOBALIZED (simsters1) 9/2 ~ Nice stakes winning filly form Monsun who has consistantly given her all for trainer simsters1. First timer over the routes and it’s unknown how the sharp rise in distance from her last start over 6F will test her. If she can lift a cog and handle the rise in distance, she’s worth an each way ticket.

An interesting race and a battle of tactics could be where it’s won. Good luck .
