The prestigious race is open to all horses of four years of age and up. The weather has been pristine early this week and this pattern is expected to continue throughout this weekend, so look for the track to be listed as fast at post time. The race has drawn nearly a full field with a lucky thirteen runners to start in this Saturday’s Sand Castle Godolfin Mile. Lets take a look at the field in this year’s Sand Castle Godolfin Mile.
Drawing the rail in the mile long race is Gridlockshock (Forest Wildcat x Carson City x Chief’s Crown), who is owned and trained by theodore2, owner of Theo Stables Inc. The four year old bay colt has been very lightly raced and has a lucky thirteen career starts. The colt has won four of his thirteen lifetime starts along with four places and one show. All of the colts starts have come over the dirt. His most recent start came earlier this month in France during an eight furlong allowance caliber start. The colt went straight to the lead after breaking out of the start gate. He maintained his dominance of the race until the stretch where he ran out of steam in the final furlongs and was just edged out of the win in a photo finish where the bay colt was placed second. He recorded an impressive speed figure of one hundred twelve. The colts only stakes start has come in the listed Stupid Pie (IRE) Stakes last December where the colt finished sixth. This Saturday will mark the colts first attempt at graded stakes competition.
In the second post is Night Ranger (JPN) (Stravinsky x Forty Niner x Danzig), who is out of the stakes-winning dam Night Train, and is owned by chop, owner of Topicount Stables. The chestnut four year old colt has been lightly raced with a total of fifteen lifetime career starts. The chestnut colt has won twice in his career, both times over the dirt. His most recent start came last month in an allowance caliber race over eight furlongs overseas in Iowa. Here the colt finished second after just setting off the pace for the majority of the race. The colt has only finished out of the money once in his last eight starts, this coming on a good dirt track. One downfall for the colt may be inexperience as this Saturday will be the colts first stakes start, graded or otherwise.
Our favorite will be One Wild Cat (Wild Again x Storm Cat x Seeking The Gold), who is out of the stakes-winning dam Grand Designs, and is owned by sdmf5, owner of Black Label Stables. This six year old dark gray horse has had a total of forty-four career starts in his lifetime of racing. He has won a lucky thirteen of his starts, all of which have come over the dirt. The handsome horse has also amassed career earnings totaling up to $1,341,159. His most recent start came overseas in Delaware last month during the Duke Ali Cap where the horse broke out of the starting gate and was held just off the pace in second. He took the lead in the turn but was challenged later in the stretch and placed second in a photo in which he lost by a nose, though setting a speed figure of one hundred thirteen. The dark gray horse has had some very impressive speed figures lately including two one hundred thirteen and a one hundred and fifteen recorded in the Prims Memorial (G2), along with a one hundred sixteen in a listed stakes just a month earlier. In the turn he was urged forward and won the race by two and one-fourth lengths after setting a speed figure of one hundred nine.
