This will be the very first time that you get to see some of these BLUEGRASS DERBY hopefuls and one of them will get the lucky prize of an automatic entry into that big race with a win here. If you haven’t read my article earlier this week about how that sometimes works out you may want to go to the BTB and check it out. It seems that this race has the stigma of actually being a jinx for Derby hopefuls. Last year’s winner EL INDUSTRIAL came up lame and didn’t even get to compete. All in all though, every one of these owners would give a lot to be the winner here and know this early that they are all set for the Derby and ready to train however they see fit until the big race. Some of these youngsters are really starting to mature and could be the next big thing in our race world. Here is hoping that I can be one of the folks that get to say “I remember when…” at the end of the year when the votes come in for the three year old Horse of the Year. I know that many of these trainers are dreaming the same thing so let’s take a look:

<PP#1>

1 – SNARKY REMARK(IRE)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

7/1

LooneyLopo

10.3%

B.Moore

25 – 2 – 4 – 2 – 8%

106.25

$136,040</T>
66</T>

(INVINCIBLE SPIRIT (IRE) x DIESIS(GB) x LYPHARD out of THREEPEAT) I must admit that I had no idea what “Snarky” meant until I GOOGLED it. This colt is named for a sarcastic remark so I will try to keep those out of this write up! After starting on the grass, trainer LooneyLopo and the Sunshine Stables moved this guy to dirt three races back and he took off. He comes in with two consecutive Stakes wins and a sizzling 106 SPF last time out. He has the look of one of those come from nowhere youngsters that bursts on the scene at this time of year. He is a deep closer so jockey Moore will not be able to take advantage of the inside post. I’m sure the folks at the GR Simsters will be watching this horse and cheering on one of their own. He certainly looks like he could be a contender if he doesn’t bounce from that big number last time out. <PP#2>

2 – ZABEEL WARRIOR(AUS)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

18/1

Hewitt

13.2%

F.Oxon

160 – 34 – 29 – 28 – 21%

95.82

$410,760</T>
8</T>

(UKOK WARRIOR (AUS) x RANSOM CALLING x ZABEEL(NZ)) Of the fourteen horses fathered by Aussie sire UKOK WARRIOR, this is the only one to win a race. Of course he also is the only Stakes and Graded winner as well. He won the GI SPARKLING WINE Stakes last October then threw in a couple of clunkers. Trainer Hewitt and the Briant Breeding & Racing Empire gave him a prep race last month in an allowance which he won easily with a wire to wire win. Hopefully that will put him back on track and this is a huge race for the youngster. Those two poor races were the only time he has ever finished off of the board and his owners would like to see that get back on that streak. They have F.Oxon in the leather and he is one of the best in the business, that should help getting the colt straightened out. <PP#3>

3 – INDY PROSPECTOR(FL)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

6/1

Mayflowers

25.5%

V.Collins

37 – 7 – 5 – 3 – 19%

99.54

$578,530</T>
25</T>

(INDY KING x BROAD BRUSH x MR. I can assure you that trainer Mayflowers and the Fortune 500 Stables couldn’t disagree more. They have really worked this colt and tried different strategies and distances with different results. It certainly appears that this is not his best distance as he has never won and had his two worst races during the three outings over 7 ½ furlongs. They have Collins in the irons and hopefully his magic hands on the reins can pace the colt enough to leave some for the stretch run. If this race was run at less than a mile this would be my choice but at this distance I am leery. <PP#4>

4 – MAMBO TIL TEN(KY)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

16/1

Layoff

16.3%

N.Bonkowski

43 – 0 – 6 – 4 – 0%

96.80

$ 134,510</T>
82</T>

( ROCK HARD TEN x KINGMAMBO x NIJINSKY II out of MIDNITE MAMBO) I love this colt’s name and it certainly fits his pedigree. He has never missed the board in nine races and won his first Stakes race last time out with a nice 96 SPF. That was at 9 ½ f and you have to wonder if he will like the longer distances even better. Trainer Layoff and the Worldwide Stables along with the rez at Northwest Racing Circuit have to be excited about this colts prospects. He is coming on at the right time and looks like he will be ready for the grueling Triple Jewel run if he can get in. He is ranked in the mid 80s right now so he needs a couple of big wins or a Lock race like here. One big worry in this race is that jockey Bonkowski has had a dismal season. Generally quite capable, this year he is still looking for his first winning mount in 43 races! This would be a great time to get it. <PP#5>

5 – AZZA MUSS(AUS)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

13/1

Sadlier

7.9%

T Campy

128 – 13 – 21 – 15 – 10%

97.64

$ 308,891</T>
11</T>

( DESERT KING (IRE) x CAPOTE x LEAR FAN out of YALUCKY MENTUCKY) Our only young lady in the race, this will be her first time against the boys since her maiden race early last year. She actually looks to have more of a turf influence in her pedigree and it seems a bit strange that she has never tried the grass. She has handled herself well so far though and would love to come in her and kick the colts. Campy is holding the reins and he is quite capable of guiding this young lady. After winning his last Stakes race of his two year old campaign, trainer WarEmblem4 gave him a nice layoff and he still came back and won the DUSTY DANCE MEMORIAL Stakes last month. He flies the colors of the Winterfell Stables and runs with the crowd over at GR Simsters. He broke the century mark with his SPF last time and looks to be ready to break out. A step up in class here but he likes the extra distance and has a capable if unspectacular jock up in Ryan. His last outing was a triple digit SPF win at the STOSCH SPECIAL Stakes that I’m sure made the folks at the Del Penn residency proud. He usually runs as a stalker but took the lead in a hurry that race and led wire to wire. Everything is set up for him, now is the time for this colt to show what he can do. <PP#10>

10 – LUCKY’S CARPET(KY)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

12/1

NARacing2

19.6%

A.Baldinger

13 – 0 – 3 – 1 – 0%

95.15

$ 148,380</T>
38</T>

( KINGMAMBO x STORM CAT x MILL REEF) After winning the DEPUTY GOLD ANT Cap Stakes last October, it appeared that this colt was on his way for trainer NARacing2 and Mr Lucky’s Stables. Since then his two races have been rather uninspired affairs with little improvement shown. I’m sure that Mr. Lucky has thrown a few ideas around at the Ohio Thoroughbred Racing Rez to figure out how to motivate this guy but so far the increase in speed hasn’t shown up. Granted one of those races was on an off track but last time out he ran a fast track and looked like the one to beat and didn’t have anything to show in the stretch. Compounding the problem is the struggles that jockey Baldinger is having this year, finding few mounts and still looking for his first win. He needs to make the most of this entry and bring home a winner. The colt will certainly have to bump his SPF to get to that level. <PP#11>

11 – JACK’S HOUSE(KY)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

8/1

BlackLabel

11.4%

RJ Rehberger

31 – 2 – 1 – 2 – 6%

102.72

$ 151,374</T>
52</T>

( GOLDEN MISSILE x SAINT BALLADO x THE MINSTREL out of LADY PREACHER) Things really seemed to be rolling for this colt and trainer BlackLabel before the last race. The colt had won four in a row and five of six and had just thrown his best SPF with a smart 102 SPF. They went into the GI VERMONT is 4 LOVERS race, flying the AJM Racing colors and the hopes of the Ireland Residency. At the half he was moving to within a head of the lead and that is where it seemingly all fell apart fading badly to 10th place with only a 91 SPF. Now you have to decide if that was an apparition or the distance at 9f was too much or he will be a Stakes only kind of guy. Adding to the worries for this owner is the poor record this year of jockey Rehberger who has had only five mounts hit the board so far this year. In a way, this could be a three year campaign make or break race for this team. <PP#12>

12 – GOOD BAD UGLY(KY)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

8/1

Super7

19.1%

A.Brooks

42 – 8 – 3 – 3 – 19%

104.08

$ 137,500</T>
65</T>

( UNBRIDLED’S SONG x FORTY NINER x BOLD RULER out of TOM’S HAPPY HIPPY) What would a Lock Race be without an entry from the Super Stables? Well this is an entry with some attitude. With the lone exception of a Graded race on an off track, he has shown really nice improvement capped by the sizzling 104 SPF he put up in winning the FOREST MINE CHALLENGE in January. He’s had a nice rest and looks ready to make his mark here for Trainer Super7. Hot jockey Brooks is in the leather and his come from behind style matches this mount although they will need to be careful not to get too far back as has happened with this colt. He once moved from eighteenth all the way up to third but ran out of real estate in the stretch. I think that this youngster will be even better at longer distances but he could be the one to beat here. <PP#13>

13 – TRADING JACK(KY)

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

9/1

Simsters4

18.1%

C.Wall

19 – 2 – 1 – 1 – 11%

101.72

$78,120</T>
84</T>

(DEHERE x FORTY NINER x BLUSHING GROOM(FR) out of MASTER OF NONE) What could be nicer than to come into this race undefeated and on a five race win streak? It is looking good for Trainer Simsters4 and Lenny’s Evil Empire Stables as they have done an excellent job of bringing this surprising colt along slowly. Foaled by a nondescript mare, MASTER OF NONE, he has done everything asked of him winning every race rather easily and posting two straight 100 plus SPFs. He has races as both a stalker and also a deep closer so capable jockey Wall will have his pick as the race develops. The GR Simsters Residency looks like they may have their hopes pinned to this colt to be in the group that they are hoping will make them proud in the big three year old races this year. I have no reason to doubt that hope right now. <PP#14>

14 – CASH DUE(AUS)</

ODDS

OWNER

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

7/1

ChiliMac

25.0%

P.Sullivan

99 – 8 – 7 – 12 – 8%

101.61

$ 135,353</T>
39</T>

(ENCOSTA DE LAGO (AUS) x A.P. INDY x STORM CAT out of DOUBLE THE BET) Another really nicely bred colt this time out of Stakes winning He-Mare DOUBLE THE BET. And another colt that has nothing to show but good numbers for trainer and owner ChiliMac and the Great Plains Residency. He’s only missed the board one time in twelve races and that was on an off track that he apparently wasn’t fond of. He has continued to improve and has one Stakes win to his credit. The biggest worry here is that he has a tendency to get to second and not be able to move that last gear into the lead. It is a bit of a reach to expect jockey Sullivan to provide that motivation as he has had his struggles this year. Parked on the outside and preferring the rocking chair just behind the leaders may take something out of the colt here too. It might be a bit of a stretch to see him contend but it is still a possibility.

Morning Line = 3-14-9-11-12-7-13
Paz Picks = 13-12-8-1

I have sat in places all over Bourbon Street trying to handicap this race. Perhaps that is the problem as I may have had a Hurricane or two to help me out in that regard and they can hit you in a hurry! These youngsters are at the place where a lot of them will start to go one way of the other for this season. Several may have been two year old wonders that will never reach those heights again and others may be just getting started to qualify for the big three year old races. It is incredibly tough to choose just which way they art pointed right now. However, they pay me the big bucks at the BTB to pick these races so here goes. I like SNARKY REMARK to put up a good mark and finish fourth although I worry that big speed last time out may affect him. I would like to see him with another race under his belt to see if it is for real.
