This is an interesting conundrum for handicappers, because it also features two well bred first timers in the race, so it is anyone’s guess how they will do. Carlos714 sends Go Bella Go, and at first blush, the Lycius filly appears to be overmatched, with two horrible performances where her speed figure failed to crack 60. However, this filly is more inconsistent than anything else, as she looked good when breaking her maiden with a 74 SF, and then three starts back when she made a mild rally to finish fourth in a stakes, with a 76 SF. A reversion to that form could see her rewarding her backers with a solid payoff. Ddahl’s Song of Denmark has shown a great deal of potential in only three starts. The light grey miss won at first asking, then put up a second in allowance company with a 77 SF, and then most recently was third in her stakes debut with a 75 SF. The extra distance appears to suit her running style, and her pedigree is pretty similar to Anticosti, winner of this year’s Derby. Brian Ironside is aboard. Dgdg has been patient with Sword of Pgpg, and has been rewarded, with two wins from five starts. The half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Pgpg’s Filly (I’d like to see how she eventually handles the turf) has consistently put up speed figures in the mid to upper 70s, and her deep closing style makes her look like she’ll take the next step forward here. The biggest concern is her vulnerability to pace, as of the four horses with proven form, only one has shown speed. That would be Minnesota’s Steppin’ Up. The Pikepass miss gets leading rider Herbert Ross, and she could very well steal this race on the front end. Winner of three of five starts, and never worse than third, the chestnut is the lone stakes winner in the field, having captured the 7 furlong Pro I Memorial last time out (78 SF). She got a little leg-weary in the stretch, so the additional 1/16th of a mile is a concern, but if she gets an easy lead early, Ross could nurse her along to get the distance.
The field is completed by two nicely bred first timers, who have a tough assignment here, but could be any kind. Peeps7 has the royally bred Forty Ninjas, who is by Forty Niner out of a Nijinsky II mare. The bay filly, with that dam-sire, may eventually be better on turf, but she should be able to get this distance. Barn25dog sends Perfect Pegasus, a dark chestnut daughter of sim freshman sire Pleasantly Perfect, and is the first foal out of the speedy Barndog’s Pegasus, a Fusaichi Pegasus mare who won 8 of 42, including a 7 furlong allowance score with a 116 SF.
