Valiance has run 4 times to date, all in England, and is now with a new stable. He won his debut on the dirt and followed up with a 2nd in a stakes race on turf. His next two runs produced third placed finishes in conditions races and this looks a huge step up in class. He hasn’t raced since May last year, and his previous start was in November 2006. Trainer: De Kock, Jockey: Shea

(2) Sea Hunter (GB) – 100

6 y/o bay horse by Lend A Hand (GB) out of Ocean Grove (IRE) by Fairy King (USA)

– (26) 5 – 2 – 6. Following a 21 month absence from the track, Sea Hunter has run 4 times in Dubai since early December. Those runs include a win over the course and distance in a conditions race, and he did have some decent horses behind him. This is a step up in class, but he could surprise. Trainer: Al Raihe, Jockey: Ffrench

(3) Diabolical (USA) – 113

5 y/o chestnut horse by Artax (USA) out of Bonnie Byerly (USA) by Dayjur (USA)

– (19) 8 – 6 – 2. Racing now for Godolphin, Diabolical is a serious contender here and must be targetting the Golden Shaheen on World Cup night. He placed 2nd in a Gr1 in the USA in April and followed that up with wins at Gr3 and Gr2 level, both over this distance. He is having his first start since July when he won at Saratoga. Trainer: bin Suroor, Jockey: Dettori

(4) Terrific Challenge (USA) – 109

6 y/o chestnut horse by Royal Academy (USA) out of Clever Empress (GB) by Crafty Prospector (USA)

– (21) 8 – 7 – 2. Terrific Challenge made a disappointing return to the track following a nine month break since his midfield effort in the Golden Shaheen last year. He finished well behind Sea Hunter last time out and will need to return to the form that saw him win his Gr3 prep over this trip before World Cup night last season. Trainer: Watson, Jockey: Durcan

(5) Malayeen (AUS) – 87

5 y/o brown horse by Anabaa (USA) out of Wily Trick (USA) by Clever Trick (USA)

– (20) 4 – 3 – 6. Malayeen has been improving steadily in low level handicaps and stepped up a gear to win a decent handicap over this trip 3 weeks ago. However, he’s taking on horses rated 20 points and more better than him. It would take a huge performance for him to feature here. Trainer: Selvaratnam, Jockey: Atjebi

(6) Power Politics (USA) – 95

5 y/o bay horse by Seeking The Gold (USA) out of Stormy Pick (USA) by Storm Creek (USA)

– (10) 2 – 1 – 1. Power Politics has run only one good race in 5 starts in Dubai, two runs back over this trip in a handicap. He doesn’t seem to have the class to win in Gr3 company, though generally doesn’t finish all that far back in his races. Trainer: Al Muhairi, Jockey: Smith

(7) Botanical (USA) – 95

7 y/o bay horse by Seeking The Gold (USA) out of Satin Flower (USA) by Shadeed (USA)

– (22) 3 – 3 – 2. Botanical hasn’t run since two poor runs in Dubai a year ago at stakes and Gr3 level and hasn’t won since scoring in an allowance race in the USA in June 2005. It’s unlikely that he’ll be a danger to the contenders here. Trainer: Charpy, Jockey: O’Shea.

(8) Salaam Dubai (AUS) – 107

6 y/o bay gelding by Secret Savings (USA) out of Gulistan (AUS) by Rubiton (AUS)

– (28) 6 – 4 – 3. Salaam Dubai ran the race of his life when third in the Golden Shaheen last year. He returned to the track in November with a win in a conditions race at Jebel Ali over 1000 metres but was a touch disappointing when 5th to Sea Hunter last time out. The weight turnaround will bring them closer together, and he could feature if he can reproduce his best. Trainer: Selveratnam, Jockey: Mullen

(9) Asiatic Boy (ARG) – 120

4 y/o bay colt by Not For Sale (ARG) – S S Asiatic (USA) by Polish Navy (USA)

– (9) 5 – 2 – 0. Asiatic Boy made a huge impression in Dubai last season, winning all four of his starts, including the three legs of the Triple Crown. He finished up the season with a 9.50 length victory in the UAE Derby over 1800 metres, in a time only fractionally slower than Discreet Cat’s win in 2006, and was immediately touted as the stables World Cup horse for 2008. Although only finishing 4th and 5th in his two subsequent starts in England, he was facing probably the best turf horses in the world in the likes of Ramonti and Authorised, and is quite probably better suited to the dirt track in Dubai. He hasn’t run since August and 1200 metres could be too short for him, but the talk is that he has the natural speed to make a big impression here. Trainer: De Kock, Jockey: Murtagh

(10) Mercury Chief (SAF) – 95

6 y/o chestnut gelding by London News (SAF) out of Ivor’s Girl (SAF) by Northern Guest (USA)

– (17) 4 – 1 – 0. Mercury Chief made a winning return at Jebel Ali following a 10 month break when trying the dirt for the first time. He followed up with a midfield finish in a conditions race and looks like he’ll have a bit to find to be a serious challenger here.
