GENERAL CROOK (UNION RAGS x BERNARDINI x MR. PROSPECTOR) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(6-5-1-0)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out of the 2014 Bluegrass Oaks winning mare FIRST DEGREE\nBURN, he\u2019s certainly looked the part up till this point. He\u2019s also a\nhalf-brother to LOW FIDELITY (BROKEN VOW) who finished 2nd<\/sup>  in the 2017 Bluegrass Derby. He may have been\nthe most dominant male horse on dirt as a 2 year old winning three graded\nevents including two G1\u2019s (Breeder\u2019s Bowl Juvenile, Sparkling Wine\nStakes).  His speed figs continue to\nimprove as the distances grow. Having earned 276 points already it looks as\nthough GENERAL CROOK may have already punched his ticket to the derby, however\nhe is set to make his 3 year old debut in the G2 Land\u2019s End March 15th<\/sup>\nto add to his already impressive resume. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ARROGATE\u2019S MALIBU (ARROGATE x MALIBU MOON x DEPUTY MINISTER)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(5-2-2-1)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out of the G2 winning MALIBU MOON\u2019S LADY and half-brother to\nthe G1 winning MY AMERICAN LADY. Like GENERAL CROOK he\u2019s never been out of the\nmoney in a graded race and earned his G1 badge in the Merry Christmas less than\na month ago. He\u2019ll make his three year old debut running in the G1 Vermont is 4\nLovers. Given that his G1 winning sister won at 10 furlongs, I think its fair\nto assume that he may get better and better as the distances open up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOT YET REGISTERED (EL CORREDOR x TIZNOW x ELITE SQUADRON) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(10-5-0-2) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An interesting character out of the speedy stakes winning\nWOKINGHAM. He seems to defy logic in the sense that his mare was the super\nshort sprinty type and his sire seems to throw much more sprinters then\nrouters. Despite that he managed two graded wins in his 2 year old season with\nthe biggest being the G1 End of the Line Futurity. I\u2019ll also give him an\nhonorable mention for finishing 3rd<\/sup> in the Breeders\u2019 Bowl Juvenile\nbut he concerns have arisen as he didn\u2019t fire in the G1 Movieland Futurity. One\nhas to wonder just how much of a threat he\u2019ll be when he starts his three year\nold season in the G2 Sleepy Fan Stakes next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JOEY DA K (INTO MISCHIEF x STREET CRY x GIANT\u2019S CAUSEWAY) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(7-3-2-1)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out of the stakes placed mare SECRET CONNECTION, he\u2019s\nalready surpassed his mare\u2019s accomplishments earning a G1 victory in the\nMovieland Futurity. He made it look easy in that race making a powerful move at\n2nd<\/sup> call and picking up 13 lengths to run away with ease. He\u2019ll make\nhis 3 year old debut in a couple weeks where he\u2019ll meet A TINY BIT (see below)\nin the G3 Scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A TINY BIT (ARROGATE x DANZIG x DYNAFORMER)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(7-5-0-0)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scratch bred colt coming from a trainer who\u2019s determined to\nget that derby bid. Thus far he\u2019s won the G1 Back up Battle but fell short in\nthe G1 Merry Christmas finishing 7th<\/sup> by 7.5 lengths. As mentioned\nabove he\u2019ll run against JOEY DA K in the G3 Scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NYQSTAY APE (NYQUIST x STAY GOLD (JPN) x AFFIRMED)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trainer: hipiloto<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(8-3-1-1)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out of the G1 winning mare LUNA APE took down the G1 North\nFork Stakes back in September before falling flat in the G1 Breeder\u2019s Bowl Juvenile.\nHe started his derby trail this past weekend in the G3 Legoland finishing 4th<\/sup>.\nThe 4th<\/sup> place finish was a hiccup in his Bluegrass aspirations, but\nthere\u2019s still plenty of time for him to rebound. Time will tell where he ends\nup next. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

SPEED GENES (FIBRE SONDE x HUSSONET x A.P. INDY)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(7-2-4-1) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out of the allowance winning SPEED DAEMON and has been in\nthe money in all of his 7 races including a 3rd<\/sup> place G1 North Fork\nStakes and 2nd<\/sup> place in the G1 Breeders Bowl Juvenile. Having always\nbeen the bride\u2019s maid and never the bride he\u2019s in a unique position that keeps\nhim very relevant in the upcoming derby preps even without having a key\nvictory. For the moment there is nothing set up for him in the immediate future\nat the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DERBY THEORY (BLAME x SMART STRIKE x NUREYEV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appropriately named DERBY THEORY is a scratch bred colt\nwho\u2019s defining moment thus far came in the G3 Charcoal Breeder\u2019s Cup. He ran a\nvery good race in the G1 Merry Christmas where he finished 2nd<\/sup>\nmissing by less than a length. At the moment he\u2019s pointing towards the G1\nDreams of Zambia on Feb 15th<\/sup>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

WILD WILD DEPUTY (HONOR CODE x DEPUTY MINISTER x GONE WEST)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same determined trainer (cough cough given) has another\nimpressive one, this time a scratch bred son of HONOR CODE who head bobbed his\nway to victory in the G2 Club Stakes this past November. He\u2019s classically bred\nand has looked the part of a potential derby candidate early on as he\u2019s been\ncompetitive at whatever distance he\u2019s run at. \nHe\u2019ll meet another derby hopeful NOT YET REGISTERED in the G2 Sleepy Fan\nStakes February 22nd<\/sup>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLAME THE CADET (BLAME x FORTY NINER x DEPUTY MINISTER)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(7-4-3-0)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This makes the third of given\u2019s derby hopefuls that look the\npart early on. Bred by the great cadetdegen out of his SW mare CADET\u2019S QUEEN he\nran a well placed 2nd<\/sup> in the G1 Movieland Futurity to end his 2 year\nold season. BLAME THE CADET is set to make his 3 year old debut in the G1\nVermont is 4 Lovers where he\u2019ll face off against a tough looking ARROGATE\u2019S\nMALIBU. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

RED WOLF ROAD (QUALITY ROAD x DEPUTY MINISTER x SEEKING THE GOLD)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(8-3-3-0) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you haven\u2019t guessed by now, this is basically a write up\non given\u2019s barn. This scratch bred son of QUALITY ROAD has yet to get that\ndefining win with his best finish coming in the form of a 2nd<\/sup> place\nfinish at the G1 Sparkling Wine Stakes. His last race as a two year old was\nless than inspiring as he faded to 14th<\/sup> in the Breeders Bowl\nJuvenile. I didn\u2019t see an entry for him, so he may be getting a bit of a break\nbefore he starts his quest for the derby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PIRATE TYPHOON (ARROGATE x DEPUTY MINISTER x FORTY NINER)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(9-2-3-1) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scratch bred son of Arrogate is another who is still looking\nfor that graded victory but has run well enough to be in the conversation. He\u2019s\ngot a listed stakes victory and a 2nd<\/sup> place finish in the G1 End of\nthe Line Futurity. However, his last two tries at the G1 level have been less\nthan stellar with him finishing 8th<\/sup> and 7th<\/sup>. Nothing\nscheduled for him in the near future, so we\u2019ll see if his trainer elects to\nkeep him on the derby trail or send him down a different path. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
