This week’s Water Heather(IRE) Memorial saw a battle right down to the wire between the race favorites. When the dust cleared, Rock Me Mambo went to the winner’s circle. This was her eighth win in eleven starts this year, as well as the ninth of her career. She posted a speed of 102.0, her second 100+ speed in as many weeks. The race brings her career earnings to the $187991 mark, or $10444 per race. This year she sits at an even more impresive mark of $15640 per race. The win also solidified an already very good ranking in the Older Female Long Turf division, moving her up eleven places to a number 24 ranking. At only eighteen starts, this filly has a lot of racing yet to come, and what looks to be a very bright future. Oddsmakers hit this one nearly dead on, and with no surprises coming out of this field, payouts at the betting window were minimal. The winner paid $5.40 $3.30 $2.10 across the board. Exotics were miserable, paying a measley $6.00 in the exacta and an even more meagre $10.30 in the trifecta.

Barb’s Soda Bread(IRE) provided the early fireworks in this one, barreling out to an early lead from the gate. She looked like she was on cruise control, methodically opening a five and a half length cushion by first call, and stretching it to just over seven as they crossed the half. Before her tail had crossed the half post though, that cushion rapidly began to evaporate, as Rock Me Mambo and race favorite Set The Clock(KY) turned on the jets, eating up the deficit almost within a furlong. From that point on it was a two horse race, with Rock Me Mambo and Set The Clock(KY) dueling for position. From the break, not more than three quarters of a length separated these two fillys, and as they took over the race in the second half, neither seemed willing to give an inch. As they turned for home, ten lengths ahead of the nearest competitor, and mere half length separated the two, and Set The Clock(KY) managed to shave off another quarter as they neared the wire. Rock Me Mambo was determined not to let her pass, though, and crossed the wire first with a bare quarter length to spare. Love Quest(MD) simply outlasted the rest here, taking third place honors, sixteen lengths out at the wire.
