Bass Fishing was sitting right in his sweet spot at four and a quarter lengths out at first call, surprising the field in the second half to grab a victory in this week’s Festive Brook Special. This is the second stakes win for the four year old colt, and his fifth win in ten career starts. He posted a career best 105 speed figure in the win, posting his third 100+ speed in his last five races. The purse took his career earnings to the $86428 mark. The win also took him to a rank of 266 in the older Turf Classic division, and at only 10 starts, this colt still has a lot of good racing in front of him to make his mark. This was the week Virginia bettors were waiting on, with some excellent payouts at the window for handicappers with the right stuff. The winner paid a very nice $20.60 $8.70 $7.70 across the board. The exotic payouts were the best we’ve seen for a stakes race in Virginia in a while, with a $159.80 payout in the exacta and a generous $1218.80 in the trifecta.

Trevordosky got out to the early lead, pressured early on the rail by Bruiza. He only managed a quarter length separation by first call, but he managed to extend it to just over one length by the half. The early pressure took its toll though, and Mannart Tornado made a move on the leader from just off the lead at the half, overtaking him at the third call to take a short lived lead as they moved toward the stretch. As they moved into the stretch, three closers from midpack, Bass Fishing, race favorite Slam It Home, and Greeley’s Prayer(KY) were pushing toward the lead en masse, fighting for the advantage as the roared down the stretch. With a burst of speed, that advantage went to Bass Fishing, who left the rest behind, crossing the wire three lengths ahead of the pack. Mannart Tornado held on for all he was worth to hold off an onrushing Greeley’s Prayer(KY), finishing second a mere half length in front of the closing Greeley’s Prayer(KY), who took third place.
