One, the Dell Computer Debutante will be run in California while New York hosts the Getaway Stakes. This dilutes the quality of the fields of each field but it mirrors real life racing and realistically shipping in real life is more difficult then in the sim. We’ll take a look at the field of the Getaway which has attracted a field of thirteen starters. Four are previous graded winners and two others are graded placed. In addition two are non winners and a number of runners have only one start including the favorite.

#1 Bowlegged Mule 5/1

Bowlegged Mule draws the rail but it should be no trouble for this stretch running filly who will likely drop back and save ground before making a big run. She’s the fourth betting choice in the field and one of only two grade two winners. She’s actually a dual graded winner as she took a grade three as well. Overall she is has four wins and a second in five starts and her second came in her debut at five and one half furlongs where she came charging late to lose by less than a length. She’s a scratchbred daughter of Army Mule x Rubiano x Indian Charlie. That’s a pedigree loaded with speed. Army Mule was undefeated in three starts but he made the most of them, becoming a grade one winner at seven furlongs and Rubiano was a champion sprinter.

#2 Choice Star 37/1

Choice Star is the first of two starters who have not yet won a race. She finished a well beaten third in her only start. That race came on July 20th in a local-bred Australian race at five and one half furlongs. Interestingly the race was a conditioned allowance, not a maiden. With only six starters Choice Star was forwardly placed early, running second behind the winner early on before fading. The winner that day, Surpass Potential was winning for the first time while the second place runner was a previous winner (although on turf and making her first start on dirt). Choice Star is a daughter of Extreme Choice out of a Bushranger x First Samurai mare. Extreme Choice is a son of the speedy Not a Single Doubt.

#3 American Goer 7/1

American Goer is a scratchbred daughter of American Pharoah x A.P. Indy x Easy Goer. Although that pedigree suggests that she will excel routing she has proven herself at sprint distances. All of her races have come and six and one half furlongs and she has improved in each of them. She was all speed in her maiden win and again in her second start, an allowance. Most recently she was challenged for the early lead in the Grade Two Red Fish Blue Fish Stakes. Dantoo, a winner of more races than American Goer had starts took the early lead but it was no easy task. American Goer was right after her the whole time before taking a short lead in the early stretch. Unfortunately the early pace set things up for a nice filly named Victory Lion who closed from twelfth to win going away. With her pedigree American Goer should like the extra sixteenth here but it remains to be seen if she needs the lead or if she can rate.

#4 Arrokaza 4/1

Arrokaza is the second choice in the field and the second of the two grade two winners lined up today. She’s undefeated in four starts including a listed win two starts back and the Grade Two Lean Machine back on July 6th. She’s well rested for this spot and her pedigree suggests the distance should be no problem. She’s a daughter of Arrogate out of the A.P. Indy x Deputy Minister mare Garukaza. She’s from the family of two Hall of Famers and a plethora of stakes winners including her three year old older brother (and the mare’s first foal) Humorakaza by Distorted Humor. Arrokaza has speed aplenty but she has also shown she doesn’t need to be on the lead to win. In her listed stakes victory she allowed a longshot to dictate the terms early before that filly faded badly and Arrokaza ran away from the field.

#5 Infanta Maria 12/1

Infanta Maria has the most starts of any horse in the field with seven. She’s won two of them and run second twice. She broke her maiden at first asking in a HOT race against males. Her two second place finishes were unlucky losses in listed stakes races as she was beaten a total of one length combined in both starts. Most recently she won an allowance at seven furlongs two starts back, making her one of the few fillies in this race who have run the distance already. She tends to be a closer and a fast pace is expected here which will work in her favor. Infanta Maria is a daughter of Peruvian stallion Koko Mambo out of a Not a Single Doubt x A.P. Indy mare. Her female family shows a number of stakes placed runners to its credit but Infanta Maria would become it’s first stakes winner if she were to take this race.

#6 She Walksin Beauty 9/2

She Walksin Beauty is a grade three winner, having taken the Independence Day back on June 29th. Another filly who is well rested for this spot that was her third victory in four starts, with one third. That third came in a grade two just one race prior to the Independence Day when she lost to Apathetic Guru who went on to win another grade two after that race and is ranked number one in the division. She Walksin Beauty also has a listed win to her credit. She likes to sit just off the early pace and pounce in the stretch run which is a style that would be to her benefit here. She’s a scratchbred daughter of Distorted Humor x Seattle Slew x Roberto.

#7 With Indy 14/1

The two grade three winners are starting next to each other but their odds could not be more different. With Indy has two wins from four starts with her biggest accomplishment coming in the Unusual Circumstances Juvenile. That race was a mere four and one half furlongs and stretching out has not been kind to this filly. She was well beaten in two graded efforts after that one and last raced on July 20th going six and one half furlongs. She’s a daughter of Moohaajim out of a With Approval x A.P. Indy mare. She is the first stakes winner for her dam but she has several graded or stakes placed older siblings.

#8 Kitten Charlie 17/1

Kitten Charlie has two wins from five starts with one third. After starting her career with two turf starts she switched to the dirt where she reeled off two straight victories, a maiden and an allowance. Both races came at five and one half furlongs. She then moved up to a listed stakes at six and one half furlongs and was soundly defeated after running fairly evenly in midpack. Her two wins saw her much closer to the early pace and the feeling here is that how she is placed early will determine her chances in this race. She’s a daughter of Jet Away out of a Tale of the Cat x Indiana Charlie mare. She is her dam’s second foal and would become her first stakes winner should she win here.

#9 Power Rangers 11/1

Power Rangers enters off a third place finish in the Grade Two Stoker Handicap. That race was run on a sloppy track which makes the form suspect. Power Rangers sat in third for most of the race and was close to the pace before fading and finishing four lengths off the winner. The winner that day was the number one filly in the division, Apathetic Guru. Prior to that race Power Rangers had won a New York local bred allowance in her debut and then beat males in a similar race. In between those starts and the Stoker Handicap she ran in another grade two and finished sixth. Her best races have seen her on the lead or stalking closely. She is a daughter of Destin out of an Awesome Again x Medaglia D’oro mare. All four of the mares foals are at least allowance winners and she also has one stakes winner.

#10 Sawtaad 33/1

Sawtaad has six starts to her name but she has only won once with one second and one third. She broke her maiden in her second start and then was third in a sloppy track allowance race. She raced unsuccessfully in a grade two and then a residency restricted stakes. Her most recent start saw her finish a solid second in a conditioned allowance on the grass. Her fastest speed came in her debut and was only a 65 which won’t cut it here. On that day she stalked the early leaders in fourth before making a sustained run to the lead. She’s a daughter of Awtaad out of a Johannesburg x Forty Niner mare. She is a half sister to one stakes winner.

#11 A Star Was Born 88/1

There is very little to say about this filly. She has one start in a listed versus males and unsurprisingly she was well beaten in ninth of ten runners. She’s a Louisiana bred daughter of Bashaar out of a Star Guitar x Gilded Time mare. The mare’s only other foal is a three year old claimer.

#12 Speightstown Girl 3/1

Our favorite is coming in on an outside post which will give the filly a chance to see how the speed pans out. This is another gal who has only one career start but she ran seven furlongs with an 81 speed. In that race she sat just a length off the early lead before easily moving up in the field and winning by two lengths. She’s a scratchbred daughter of Speightstown x Seattle Slew x Giant’s Causeway. This is a big step up for this filly and the label of favorite just puts added pressure on her.

#13 Giant’s Fry 46/1

Giant’s Fry is an Irish bred daughter of Ajaya out of a Street Cry x Giant’s Causeway mare. The mare’s three other foals are either stakes placed, stakes winners or graded placed stakes winners. None are by major stallions but all are by stallions perhaps better known than Ajaya, a son of Invincible Spirit. She has only one win, a maiden in her second start where she ran a career best speed of 64. She was thrown into the deep end off that start running in a listed and then a grade three. She finished poorly in both starts. Her past two starts have been allowances, one on the turf and one on the dirt and she finished third in both of those runs. She tends to run midpack but lacks that acceleration near the end to get the win.

Good luck to all!

This weekend sees two big grade one races at seven furlongs for two year old fillies.
