The Grade III Grand Critter is the second of three featured graded stakes for two year olds at Ostend<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>The two fillies and seven colts will be going an even mile on the firm turf.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>It\u2019s an inexperienced crew, averaging very than four starts apiece and with only six routes in their collective past performances.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>It\u2019s a field that left the maker of the morning line tossing his hands in the air and assigning different odds more because of inertia than any insight.<\/P>

  1. ROCK THE BUDA(KY)\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/STRONG>(ROCK HARD TEN x STORM CAT x SADLER’S WELLS)\u00a0 <\/SPAN>bred and trained by Vicki<\/I><\/B> (Twoofus Stables, 14%)\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Odds: 4-1<\/LI><\/OL>

    \u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

    This brown filly has been installed as the lukewarm favorite against the boys.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She won her lone start and that came convincingly from off the pace in a full field of fillies.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>The yielding surface may have slowed her, but her winning time was a full two seconds slower than the average winning time of the Grand Critter.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>It can\u2019t be ignored that she has route experience and more than solid breeding.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Stable ships her all the way from upstate New York<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> for this.<\/P>

    1. NEW DEAL(AUS)\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/STRONG>(SPINNING WORLD x DOME x TIME TO EXPLODE)\u00a0 <\/SPAN>bred and trained by azbear<\/I><\/B> (CVBear Racing Empire, 11%)\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Odds: 12-1<\/LI><\/OL>

      \u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

      CVBear has been easing up on the stables\u2019 numbers \u2013 there are actually four empty stalls.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Line-maker had a hard time picking a favorite, but for some reason singled this one out as the lone one to go over 10-1.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Colt did a nice job of persevering for second place after dueling through the early stages of a tough sprint stakes.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>He earned a competitive figure in that one, and the barn makes a reasonable first try around two turns.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Tough to know how he\u2019ll handle it.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Sire has had many turf routers, but dam was mostly a sprinter.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Doesn\u2019t deserve to be the favorite, but doesn\u2019t deserve to be singled out as not having a chance either.<\/P>

      1. GENEROUS DREAM(ENG)\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/STRONG>(GENEROUS(IRE) x GALILEO (IRE) x MACHIAVELLIAN)\u00a0 <\/SPAN>bred and trained by supapogs5<\/I><\/B> (Pogo Racing, 14%)\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Odds: 6-1<\/LI><\/OL>

        You have to love how this one has been handled.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>He\u2019s gone a bit longer against a bit tougher every time and has two wins in three starts to show for it.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Last time he tried a mile for the first time and looked very sharp in taking down a full allowance field.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>He earned the highest speed figure in the field that last time and he\u2019s bred to be a route specialist.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Only question is allowance to graded stakes class jump.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Snags the best jockey, and looks like the one to beat.<\/P>

        1. RELAUNCH THE GOLD(TUR)\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/STRONG>(STRIKE THE GOLD x LEO CASTELLI x RELAUNCH)\u00a0 <\/SPAN>bred and trained by babygirlz<\/I><\/B> (Belair Stud, 3%)\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Odds: 6-1<\/LI><\/OL>

          With a second and a fourth in two previous graded tries, he\u2019s the only one in the race that has shown success at this class level.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>He does try a route for the first time after five sprints.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Dam was purely a sprinter, and sire has had success at all distances, but is not known as a turf sire.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>His speed figures have decreased as he\u2019s gone farther than six furlongs, so we\u2019ll prefer others.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Barn had the fourth highest rated runner in the field, yet booked a 4% jockey.<\/P>

            Squirrel is launching a contest that will show how hard it is to have success with a new stable.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>We may already know.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Look at the 1 for 42 start of the diabolical barn run by the more than capable Squirrel.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>And not many new stables have horses with Storm Cat and Danzig<\/st1:place> in their lineage.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>After three starts in sprints, this filly got the barn its lone win when she tried a mile two races back.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Further improvement against boys in a New York<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> listed stakes motivated the $10,000 shipping charge for this.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She\u2019ll be prominent early at least.\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/P>

              After two runs on the dirt, this one returns to the grass where he is two for three.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>He is yet another to try routing for the first time.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Kodiak is a first year sire out of formidable turf sire Danehill.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Dam retired after three winless starts.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Capture\u2019s speed figures are light compared to several others in here, but the return to turf may wake him up.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>He split the field after leading early in his lone graded try.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Recently he\u2019s been running in the money against six-colt listed fields.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Anything this trainer enters deserves respect.<\/P>

                New barn has nine two-year-olds.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>It has achieved that impressive winning percentage after 23 starts despite having only two of those nine breaking their maidens.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Here\u2019s To found a four horse NW2L allowance last time and easily prevailed as heavy favorite despite running as a maiden.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>He runs into much tougher here, but there is hope.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>That last race was at a mile, and he seemed to love the distance, running in a time that trails only Generous Dreams\u2019 at eight furlongs.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Further improvement makes him a threat.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>(I don\u2019t know the reason for the tribute to Donny B in the colt\u2019s name.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>I wish I did.)<\/P>

                1. CARDBOARD COFFIN(KY)\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/STRONG>(COZZENE x SADLER’S WELLS x RAINBOW QUEST)\u00a0 <\/SPAN>bred and trained by rollsally<\/I><\/B> (12%)\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Odds: 5-1<\/LI><\/OL>

                  Second choice in the betting earned the second highest speed figure going seven and a half furlongs last time. Cozzene as the sire says he should just get better with the extra sixteenth.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Dam wasn\u2019t much of a runner, but she seems to have passed on some powerful genes.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Jockey won this race in 2004.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Closer gets speed to run at.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Major chance.<\/P>

                    He\u2019s been showing steady improvement, and when he tried his first route last time out, he handled the small field easily as a 6-5 choice should.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Dam was strictly a dirt runner and first year sire Bandini, third choice in the 2005 Kentucky Derby, so far has produced much more on dirt than on grass.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Nevertheless, barn was quick to discover this colt\u2019s preference for the lawn.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Faces tougher here than he\u2019s seen in the past, but he shows solid trends.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Very hard to figure out what to do with him in this race.<\/P>
