Challenge-Week 23

Quite a bit of action this week and I’ll pick up where I left off last week. I had enough E-cards to exchange for a sire share. So I did that and obtained a share in a sire by the name of Danbird. He’s pretty much one of the bottom of the barrel sires and was used to breed twice last year with only one actually racing and twice the year before. There’s a little Danehill blood in the sire and the children tend to like the turf. I had an open spot in the stable last week and activated Dancingduncankieth to fill that spot. Eventually, I did a U-turn, spun her back to the farm and retired her. She was bred with Danbird and now we have a 2-year filly that has been named DUNCAN BIRD (a play on the sire and mare names) and will be racing this week.

With only one horse at the farm eligible to be activated while three others are on extended rest, I pursued to acquire at least two more runners. I took a shot and filed six claims on horses this week and ended up with three. CREATIVE IMPACTS is a three year gelding with a decent bloodline of Creative Cause x Deep Impact x Sadler’s Wells. He dropped from a $40k claimer to a tag of 4k following a career best speed of 94 at a mile. He put a solid effort in this week at 7.5 furlongs, rallying from six back at the half to win by about a length and a half. He’s been running turf in all of but one of his 17 starts and that other effort was a second on the dirt. I think he has opportunity in the low end claimers and starter allowances and think the dirt may be an unexplored avenue that may be worthwhile trying. We’ll see what options are available when we race him. The claim cost 8 BP’s.

KOKETTA ran for his first owner exclusively on dirt and won four times, ITM 11 times in 17 starts. For his second owner, he was moved to the turf and picked up 5 wins in seven starts and finishing ITM each time. Speeds have been a bit better on the turf for this 5 year old who has some good blood connections of Starspanglebanner x Northern Meteor x Kingmambo. She won her start this week in a 6 furlong claiming race with a $3,000 price tag. Sprints are her thing and I’ll be looking to keep her with the turf. Starter allowance races look like the best place for her but I may also push her up the claiming ranks. 6 BP’s was the cost for this one.

The third claim I won was for SHAUNS STORM, a five year old horse out of Coastal Storm x Tiznow x Gilded Time. He’s been pretty much regulated to run in turf races. But things changed recently where he raced twice in dirt events at about a mile distance, took second in both with 101 and 99 speeds and I took that as a nice place to run him. I claimed him out of a $2,000 polytrack race that he finished third in, but under a stride (another surface he seems good at). So he can run on anything, maybe even a bed of nails, but we won’t try that. A lot of options are open with this guy who may turn out to be a steal for 4 BP’s

Now onto this weeks race results. Four horses made it to the starting gate. MAKING MISTAKES ran for the first time for the stable and got into a mile starter allowance ($5k tag). He was the 2/1 favorite in the race, which always gives the heart an extra hope for good results. He ran just off the lead in the early fractions and sliced his way to the second spot but could not catch the front runner. Second place was nice and the 105 speed number was a career best. 27 BP’s were awesome to collect and in the 9-horse field we gathered 2 sire cards, both flipping as G-cards. Picking up this horse turned out not to be a mistake after all.

HALF LOCO has been around for a while and now has 5 starts for the stable. He’s hit the board four times with this week being the first win he gained for the stable. He was dropped into a $2,500 claiming race and galloped a 10.5 distance. He rallied from ninth at the half (in a field of 11) and had a very impressive stretch run, overtaking the leaders and pulling away to a 3+ length victory. The 3/1 favorite delivered 15 BP’s and a set of 3 sire-cards. The cards flipped to a F-card and 2 G-cards.

LANDALUCE is a front running colt who I had set at 100 for his first three starts with the stable and that landed him a 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I changed the setting to 85 with hopes to relax him a bit on the front so he may have energy left for the drive to the wire. This week, he caught an off-track racing 7.5 furlongs on the grass. He sat back in third and looked to be following the new direction but could not fire up in the stretch, finished 6th. His last two races have been on the turf and it may be time to go back to the soil. With the enhancement of new blood at the farm through the claims I made this week, I’m leaning towards giving him a bit of a rest on the farm. He’s had 16 races since last June and this could help preserve him to earn some BP’s later in the year. One G-card was the profit this week.

Gelded PITTENWEEM made what will be his only appearance for the stable this week. He also caught an off-track in the 8.25 furlong, $7,500 claiming race I placed him in. He was the third choice at 5/2 odds, very competitive in my book. He broke away last from the gate and found his late footing, surging after the leaders but coming two strides short of the winner, but second place does have value. 20 BP’s worth of value. There were three claims made on my runner so he leaves the stable with a G-sire card in his wake.

A collection of 6 G-cards and 1-F are added to the handful from last week which gives a total of 4 F-cards and 10 G-cards. I’ve swapped G-cards upward to give me 6 F-cards. I’ve exchanged those too and now end the week with 1 E-card and 1 F-card.

I spent 18 BP’s in the horses that I claimed and earned 62 through racing this week. The total on hand has climbed to 578. I’ve moved RESERVATIONS FOR ME from the farm to the stable to fill the open slot that was created when Pittenweem was claimed. I’ll be looking to make a move moving Landaluce to the farm for a rest and figuring out which of the horses I claimed to take that spot later in the week.

Next week looks like four potential entries, with one being the newly bred 2 year old, Duncan Bird.

Quite a bit of action this week and
