WELCOME TO THE ANOTHER EPISODE OF “JOCKEYS ON HORSES GETTING MILK”.

On today’s show we are riding on two Gypsy Cob mares on loan to me from Ireland. They are a breed of domestic horse from the British Isles that is a small, solidly-built horse that is often, but not always, piebald or skewbald. it is particularly associated with the travelling peoples of Britain and Ireland to pull their wagons in the caravans in which they had just begun to live and travel.Today we are riding “Spot” and “Graffiti”.

My guest today is 49 year old Vern Jennings, a twenty-nine year veteran Jockey out of Washington. Vern is married and has three children and a pit bull named Ovechkin.

I’m DUNN and this is “JOCKEYS ON HORSES GETTING MILK”!

Dunn (on phone): Hey Vern its Dunn, I’m in the neighborhood and have two great horses for us to ride. Want to go for Milk?

Vern (on phone): I would love to Dunn, I have been looking forward to your call.

DUNN ARRIVES AT VERN’S HOUSE.

Dunn: What do you think of our horses today?

Vern: They are great Dunn! I have read about them and seen pictures but never have ridden one. It’s great that you were able to get them over from Ireland.

Dunn: Yes I have some good friends over there and they are big fans of the show and were thrilled to know you would be riding one. Come on let’s get going.

DUNN AND VERN HEAD SADDLE UP.

Dunn: With a dog named Ovechkin I am thinking that this has been an exciting week for you?

Vern: Yes it sure has Dunn. I have been a Capitals season ticket holder for a long time and to see them win the Stanley Cup this week was amazing. The moment that the cup was passed to Ovechkin and to see his reaction was something I will never forget. You watch these guys, that are making lots of money, play for years and then to see how life changing that moment is for them it is incredible. You realize that it has been a dream of theirs forever and it is really emotional. I am not ashamed to say I shed a few tears.

Dunn: You named your dog after the team captain. How did that come about?

Vern: When we got the dog he really had this energy and excitement about him. It kind of reminded us of how “The Great 8” reacts after he scores a goal. My kids are big fans too so we let them name the dog and that is what they came up with. The dog is actually a fan now too and will sit and watch the games with us. It really is a family affair.

Dunn: You had a big win yourself recently at the ERC Kentucky Derby. How does that compare?

Vern: Totally different watching something and experiencing it as a fan. I love to win and the thrill of winning the big race is always the same after all these years. That was a great day. It was a pleasure working with such a professional like harrylan and Tapit Street is a great horse that has a lot more wins in her. She had another nice race yesterday with a second place finish at the ERC Belmont I hear. It would have been nice to get that mount too but I am still happy for harrylan and will continue to cheer for that young filly. Congrats to you and your “Walrus” too on your third place finish.

Dunn: Thanks. She had another nice race and I hope will continue to produce for me. Do you think we will ever see a Triple Crown in the SIM?

Vern: I really doubt it DUNN. You know as a trainer yourself that it takes your horses too long to recover typically to come back and race in those three races and win. It would certainly be exciting to see but I think it is probably impossible. There are so many good horses now and even winning two legs of the crown would be a tough test for most.

Dunn: I think you are probably right Vern. I was so thrilled to have “Walrus” finish third at the Derby and Belmont. Will you continue your career much longer?

Vern: Yes I have some more years left in me yet. As I mentioned I still love to win and compete. I have made all the money I need but I still love to ride and hope that there are more big wins in my future. Maybe we will team up for a ERC Derby Win next year.

Dunn: That would be awesome Vern, I look forward to it. It has been great getting to know you today Vern, thanks for being my guest. Are you ready for some Milk?
