There have been nineteen Bluegrass Derby winners since the first running of the Bluegrass Derby in 1999.\u00a0 Sure, it was a lot easier running your horses in the infancy stages of Derby Fever, but like life itself, Derby Fever has evolved, and horses are now subject to the wear and tear of modern day racing.<\/p>\n
The Bluegrass is the most coveted race by every American trainer\/owner, and I would expect just as symbolic a victory for any trainer\/owner all over the world, and yet it remains the most elusive, sought- after race in the history of racing.<\/p>\n
What does it take to get a horse to the Derby? What \u2018Road\u2019 do I choose along the way?\u00a0 When should I start my Derby campaign?\u00a0 These are questions trainers and owners ask themselves early in the Two-Year Old season.\u00a0 Let\u2019s examine the past winners and see if we can clear a path to the Bluegrass Derby.<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s start off with some Bluegrass Derby facts:<\/p>\n
Only 5 of the 19 Derby winners won a Graded Stakes as a Two-Year Old in the months of November and December.\u00a0 Two of those five winners, ANTICOSTI<\/b> and RAS EL HANOUT<\/b> won the Grade I Club Stakes<\/i> in November.<\/p>\n
The G1 Corkscrew<\/i> has produced the most Derby winners with four, BUDA WITH THE SLEW<\/b>, ANTICOSTI<\/b>, VIRTUOSIO<\/b>, and ATAUN<\/b>.<\/p>\n
The G1 All Saints<\/i> has produced two Derby winners, HOT AND SPICY<\/b>, and INDY STORM CAT<\/b>.<\/p>\n
The G1 California Derby<\/i> has produced three Derby winners, TOWER STORM<\/b>, and GRANHEE <\/b>and CARL\u2019s SHAMELESS<\/b>, last year\u2019s Derby winner.<\/p>\n
MOUNTNOIR<\/b>, the Dubai 2000 Guineas<\/i>, GIMLET NEAT<\/b>, the Legoland<\/i> and Arkansas<\/i>, RAS EL HANOUT<\/b>, the Land\u2019s End<\/i>, INDY STORM CAT<\/b>, the Risen Star<\/i>, ANTICOSTI<\/b>, the Fountain of Ute<\/i>, I SEEK U<\/b>, the Chicago<\/i> Derby<\/i>, and DOWN THAT JAZZ<\/b>, the John Wooden<\/i>, all exited winning key prep races that have produced one Bluegrass Derby<\/i> winner.<\/p>\n
Here is a look at the Nineteen previous Bluegrass Derby winners:<\/p>\n
1999 – \u00a0PHARRUN PROSPECT<\/b> raced 11 times<\/b> in 1999 before he won the Bluegrass Derby<\/i>.\u00a0 His only notable victory during that span was a win in the G3 The Colorful Stork<\/i> just 32 days prior to the Derby… how times have changed<\/p>\n
2000 \u2013 DOWN THAT JAZZ<\/b> started his career as a claimer and was swooped up after his first start by thw wahoo<\/i> racing stables; talk about foresight.\u00a0 DTJ<\/b> won the G3 Holy Bull Stakes<\/i> and G2 John Wooden Stakes<\/i> on is way to his Derby victory.<\/p>\n
2001 \u2013 BUDA WITH THE SLEW<\/b> was a rare winner of the G1 Breeders Bowl Juvenile<\/i> to go on to win the Derby, but then BUDA<\/b> was no ordinary horse.\u00a0 The big Chestnut son of Danzig<\/i> went on to win four consecutive starts in the G1 Corkscrew<\/i>, the G1 Santa Clara Derby<\/i>, the G1 Bluegrass Derby<\/i>, and the G1 Middle Jewel<\/i>. His only hiccup during that span was in the third leg of the Triple Crown, the G1 New Yorker<\/i>, but was quick to make amends in his next start in the G2 Buckeye Derby<\/i> where he won by 5 handily.<\/p>\n
2002 \u2013 TOWER STORM<\/b> is another horse that went on to win the Bluegrass after winning the G1 Breeders Bowl Juvenile<\/i>.\u00a0 What is noteworthy here is that the only Breeders Bowl winners to win the Derby were in 2001 and 2002, long before wear and tear reared its\u2019 ugly head.\u00a0 TOWER STORM<\/b> went on to win the G1 Silver Charm Challenger<\/i> and the G1 California Derby<\/i> in route to his Derby victory.<\/p>\n
2003 \u2013 I SEEK U<\/b> has the distinction of being the only Triple Crown<\/i> winner in the history of Derby Fever.\u00a0 I SEEK U<\/b> was a lightly raced colt that raced only four times prior to his first stakes appearance in the G2 Felipe Alou Cap<\/i> where he finished a fast closing second before winning the G2 Chicago Derby<\/i> in his final prep before the Bluegrass.<\/p>\n
2004 \u2013 GRANHEE<\/b> was an accomplished sprinter as a 2yo before his connections tested his ability around two turns in the G2 End of the Line Futurity<\/i>; and pass the test he did, with an eye-opening 3 \u00bd length victory against the top 3yo\u2019s.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until five races later that he would win again in another jaw dropping performance in the G1 California Derby<\/i>, his final prep before the Bluegrass.<\/p>\n
2005 \u2013 ANTICOSTI<\/b> is one of five horses to win a Graded race as a 2yo in the month of November or December, however his November win came in the G2 Club Stakes<\/i> where he crushed the field by more than six lengths.\u00a0 His extraordinary run continued as he went on to win his next four starts in the G1 Sim Racing Form Three-Year Old Series<\/i>, the G2 Fountain of Ute<\/i>, the G1 Corkscrew<\/i>, and of course the G1 Bluegrass Derby<\/i>…exceptional, you better believe it<\/p>\n
2006 \u2013 VIRTUOSO<\/b> took the high road to the Bluegrass with four consecutive wins in the NoCal Hdcp<\/i>., the G2 New Mexico 2069 Stakes<\/i>, the G1 Corkscrew<\/i>, and then the G1 Bluegrass Derby<\/i>.\u00a0 He is THE ONLY HORSE<\/b> to ever finish ITM in the December carded G1 Movieland Stakes<\/i> and go on to win the Derby.<\/p>\n
2007 \u2013 ATAUN<\/b> raced with only moderate success leading up to the Derby having recorded only one Listed Stakes victory in his nine previous starts before his stunning performance in the G1 Corkscrew<\/i> where he locked in his start for the Bluegrass…the rest is history<\/p>\n
2008 \u2013 KISSIN STREETCRY<\/b> used the road less traveled on his way to the Bluegrass using the G2 Bonnie Situation<\/i> to leap frog his way into the Derby.\u00a0 The road less traveled? Well if you frown upon ducking the big boys, consider this…KISSIN STREETCRY<\/b> was only a \u00bd a length shy in the Middle Jewel from being the second Triple Crown winner in Derby Fever history…anyone got a secret treasure map?<\/p>\n
2009 \u2013 HOT AND SPICY<\/b> survived a Graded win in December with a victory in the G1 Eruption Handicap<\/i>.\u00a0 Locked his way into the Derby with a win in the G1 All Saints Derby<\/i> before using an Allowance Turf prep to capture the 11th<\/sup> running of the Bluegrass Derby.<\/p>\n 2010 \u2013 LUCKY\u2019S HOWIE<\/b> hadn\u2019t won a race in six tries before his final Derby prep in the 5.5-furlong INDY’S CAT Memorial<\/i>.\u00a0 In retrospect, his 20-1 Derby odds might have been an underlay, but the mrlucky<\/i> connections are no strangers to the Derby Trail, so if you think it was luck-y, think again.<\/p>\n 2011 \u2013 INDY STORM CAT<\/b> was floundering along with just a Maiden and an Allowance win in 10 tries as a 2yo before a win in his first start as a 3yo in the CRAFTY VICTORY Memorial<\/i>. Impressed with his victory, \u00a0his connections gave him a start in the G3 Risen Star<\/i> which he won going away before locking down a spot in the Derby with a win in the G1 All Saints Derby<\/i> in his final start before the Bluegrass…talk about a leap of faith<\/p>\n 2012 \u2013 RAS EL HANOUT<\/b> another late November G2 Club Stakes<\/i> winner that, like his predecessor, went on a tear winning the G3 Giant Slayer Classic<\/i> followed by the G2 Land\u2019s End<\/i> before his decisive G1 Bluegrass Derby<\/i> victory…connections for STORMY MO<\/b> must like what they are reading by now.<\/p>\n 2013 \u2013 GIMLET NEAT<\/b> spent most of his 2yo campaign racing on the turf, but a 3-length victory in his first dirt try prompted a start in the G3 Legoland<\/i>, a victory that propelled him to a win in the G1 Arkansas Juvenile Lock Prep<\/i>; one of only three horses to win the Derby in gate to wire fashion.<\/p>\n 2014 – MOUNTNOIR<\/b> was an established sprinter in his 2yo campaign, but when he was tested for Class in his final start as a 2yo, his victory in the 7-furlong G3 Los Angeles Prevue<\/i> encouraged connections to give him a start around 2-turns in the G3 Legoland<\/i>.
