The Appaloosa is an American horse breed best known for its colorful spotted coat pattern. There is a wide range of body types within the breed, stemming from the influence of multiple breeds of horses throughout its history. Each horse’s color pattern is genetically the result of various spotting patterns overlaid on top of one of several recognized base coat colors. Today, the Appaloosa is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. It is best known as a stock horse used in a number of western riding disciplines, but is also a versatile breed with representatives seen in many other types of equestrian activity. Appaloosas have been used in many movies; an Appaloosa is the mascot for the Florida State Seminoles. Today we are riding on “Van Gogh” and “Paint By Numbers”.

My guest today is Monica Ramsey, a newbie to the world of SIM Jockey with just four years under her belt. Monica calls Texas home and is in her final year of high school at Alamo Regional High. She has won ten percent of her races in her young career and looks forward to many successful years on the track.

I’m DUNN and this is “JOCKEYS ON HORSES GETTING MILK”!

Dunn (on phone): Hey Monica its Dunn, I’m in the neighborhood and have two great horses for us to ride. I love the color patterns.

Dunn: Yes they are amazing aren’t they, and you will never find two alike.

DUNN AND MONICA SADDLE UP

Dunn: So you are one of, if not the youngest Jockey in the SIM. What is that like?

Monica: Well first of all I have to thank Mike for sneaking me into the SIM at such a young age. You can’t legally become a Racing Jockey in America until you are sixteen so to get my start at thirteen is certainly an advantage. For the most part the other Jockeys are respectful but I have had to prove myself and earn that respect. But I don’t think that is any different than anyone else. At the end of the day, it isn’t about age but about ability and so far I have proven that I belong.

Dunn: How do you balance your career and school? Are you going to go to your prom?

Monica: It isn’t easy to juggle my work and studies. I go to the track early in the morning and put my work in and then head to school. I try to do as much homework as I can during my lunch break and after school I head back to the track to work more horses or to race. At night I get my homework done and then try to get a little sleep before the routines starts again the next day. I try to live as normal a life as possible when I am at school so yes I will go to the prom.

Dunn: How did you choose this for your career? There aren’t many girls your age that are Jockeys.

Monica: My Dad is actually a trainer so I grew up at the track and around horses and Jockeys. He started me riding when I was really young and saw that I had a natural talent for it. As I matured my body type was also right for the sport as I am only just five feet tall and have no trouble keeping my weight around the optimum one-hundred and ten pounds. I love horses first and most importantly and really try to develop a relationship with each horse I ride. I am also really adventurous by nature so I love the challenge and thrill of each race.

Dunn: Do you see yourself following in your Dad’s footsteps someday?

Monica: I have thought about it definitely. I want to have a long career as a Jockey though so I will do this for as long as I can. It’s hard to make too many plans for the future so I don’t try to think about it too much. I don’t know what my family life will look like, my health….just so many unknowns so for now I just take it one day at a time and enjoy where I am today.

Dunn: Do you have a favorite horse that you have worked with over the years?

Monica: Yes I do and its interesting because his name is WATERANDOILDONT mix. I am not an artist but with the art connection to today’s show and the names of the horses we are riding I am sure that is probably an accurate statement that water paint and oil paint don’t mix. Anyway, he is a really great horse out of the cbrady barn and breeder buzz. We’ve been working together for a couple of months and we had a third place finish at the “ASR Son of Dirt Stakes” on Tibbs Eve. He had a tough trip his last time out but I wasn’t aboard so that hurt his chances. Just kidding, hopefully cbrady will give me another start with him soon though.

Dunn: It has been great getting to know you today Monica. Have fun at the prom and continued success in your career. Thanks for being my guest today.
