The Newfoundland Pony is a breed of pony originating in Newfoundland, Canada. They are sturdy and muscular ponies, found in many colors, including the relatively rare white coloration. The Newfoundland Pony developed from a mix of English, Irish and Scottish pony breeds brought to Newfoundland by settlers over a period of four centuries. They were used by settlers as draft and multi-purpose ponies until the mid-20th century, when they were brought almost to the point of extinction. The population rebounded slightly after the formation of a breed registry in 1980, but still remains low. In 1997, the Newfoundland pony was declared a heritage breed of Newfoundland and Labrador. Newfoundland ponies are usually 11 to 14.2 hands, the head is small, with thickly-furred ears that are small and quite pointed at the tips. Overall, the body is stocky and muscular, with a deep, narrow chest, short back, sloping croup and low-set tail. The coat and mane are thick, especially in winter. In order to be registered with the Newfoundland Pony Society, ponies must have a good temperament and be docile and easy to work with. Today we are riding on “Yes B’y” and “Come from Away”.

My guest today is Tommy Ace, a twenty-nine year veteran of the game that calls Texas home. He has the highest winning percentage of any Jockey in the SIM and has won many big races for numerous barns over the years. Tommy is engaged to another Jockey out of Texas, Rita Fav. They live in Dallas, and are Mavs and Cowboys season ticket holders .

I’m DUNN and this is “JOCKEYS ON HORSES GETTING MILK”!

Dunn(on phone): Hey Tommy its Dunn, I’m in the neighborhood and have two great horses for us to ride. This is going to be weird. For the first time in my life I am going to be bigger than my ride. Are you sure it is safe and that I’m not going to hurt them?

Dunn: Don’t let their looks fool you Tommy, these are sturdy strong animals.

DUNN AND TOMMY SADDLE UP

Dunn: One thing I was surprised to find out when doing my research Tommy is that ACE is not your real last name.

Tommy: No you are right it’s not. Not many people know that but I am okay sharing. My real last name is Acendino from Italy originally. When I started racing I changed it to Ace as typically that name is associated with someone who excels at something. So far it has worked out.

Dunn: It sure has. What is the secret to your success?

Tommy: I am really a student of the game. I study film to learn horse and jockey tendencies. I keep a journal of very race I am in and keep track of how a horse responded in certain situations or track conditions. For me it is all about being prepared.

Dunn: Is this something that many Jockeys are doing today?

Tommy: If you want to compete I think you have to. It is so easy today to access videos of races and it would be an oversight if others aren’t taking advantage of that.

Dunn: What is it like being in a relationship with another Jockey?

Tommy: We are both very competitive people and when we compete we both want to win. When I go up against her in a race, I want to beat her just as badly as any of the other Jockeys in the race. It’s not personal, it is our jobs and we know that. When she is racing in other races I am definitely cheering her on but I have learned to just be boyfriend and let others give advice and suggestions.

Dunn: You have won a lot of big races over your career. Do you have a favorite win?

Tommy: My answer might surprise you as it wasn’t really a big ticket race. It was a Grade 3 Stakes race last November “The Corvette”. I was riding a long shot “Stormy Brilliance” that was 35/1. The race was over nine and a half furlongs and the tmjstable had a strategy for us to be patient out of the fourteen hole and it worked to perfection as I won by a length. He’s still my favorite horse to ride but unfortunately he has struggled lately at his last two Grade 1 starts.

Dunn: Wow I am surprised by that! With all your big wins the one that stands out the most is a Grade 3 for $150 K on a three year old from Kentucky.

Tommy: Sometimes you just connect with a horse you know. He was the long shot, no one thought he would come in that day. It was exciting, a day I will always remember. Almost as exciting as when the MAVS won the Championships, which unfortunately doesn’t look like it will happen again anytime soon.

Dunn: You are right about that. You need to switch teams Ace! You are riding on a Canadian Pony, it’s time to jump on the RAPTORS bandwagon. Let’s discuss it over a glass of Milk. It has been great getting to know you Tommy.
