This massive facility is home to over two hundred of the areas top thoroughbred horses. The wide opens grounds are filled with colts and fillies in every pasture. The training track in the distance is littered with promising two year olds as well as seasoned racing veterans. I continue walking along the gravel path until a reach a large and airy blue barn with an orange, yellow, and black seal above the doors. As I walk down the aisle way the air is crisp with the smell of freshly oiled leather and I see names like Ojai High, Smarty Kirby, and Tiz Vegas on the stall doors of some of the stables sleepy residents. They are all at peace with their surroundings and some even make the effort to acknowledge my presence with a questioning stare. I smile at their nodding head as they drift in and out of the mid morning snooze so many of us wish we could experience. I reach the center of this massive barn and see a stall twice the size of all the rest. With in its walls lies a sleeping mass of legs and hair covered in bedding. A sigh escapes as the pile adjusts itself slightly, then starts to snore softly like a distant and muffled locomotive. I glance at my notes and then back at the name plate on the door, they match. I whistle through the bars, hoping for a sign of life, but all that is returned is the same low rumblings of that locomotive. I lean up against the stall door and take a sigh of my own just as a gentleman rounds the aisle way with a large feed bin. The man pulls up to the first stall on the left and opens the port window and pours a measured about of grain and oats into the bin below the stall window. In an instant the barn is alive with the rustling of groggy bodies and the grumblings of hungry mouths. Just then I feel a light breeze on the back of my neck and I turn to see a massive face looking down at me. What stood before me was a 16.2 bay monster wondering why I was not feeding him. A scream from a ways down the aisle was answered by another at the opposite end of the barn. That man was not moving fasten enough, or at least that is what the monster beside me was thinking. I look down at my notes and see a picture of a bay monster roaring around the turn for home with more than three lengths of cushion to spare. This was the horse I was looking to meet; this was Kirby’s Best Yet.

In the spring of 2005 a bay colt was foaled in the bluegrass horse country of Kentucky. He spent his first year at the nursery and then was shipped, with his dam, to the Ojai Valley stables. His training began soon after and in no time at all he was pounding down the Ojai Valley’s track with an impressive possibility of true talent. King Kirby, the owner of Ojai Valley stables, saw this talent, but knew he would need to take his time with the lumbery colt. On the last Saturday of the year Kirby’s Best Yet was loaded into the gates in Germany’s premier race park in Berlin. The eighth lengths of fast dirt were a breezy for the leggy Kirby and he won with a two lengths. Showing such speed and dominance in his maiden, King Kirby decided to give his bay a bit more of a challenge with a few allowance races. All three, hosted in Germany and Denmark, proved to be no problem for him and he won them all with a couple lengths to spare.

Now that four races have passed and resulted in for wins, Kirby’s Best Yet was no longer a possible talent, but a force to be reckoned with. In March of 2007 he was entered in the Just Trying To Make It Stakes in Victoria. The field was teaming with talented stakes veterans and previous winners. Kirby drifted in the middle of the field then began to creep his way up the pack on the outside and then burst into full swing at the half way marker. He won the eleven furlongs with out a care in the world and hardly breaking a sweat. Ojai Valley not only had a keeper, but they had a horse made of solid gold. There was no stopping the Kirby and Ojai Valley knew it.

Kirby’s next obstacle was a huge jump from a stakes race to the Sidney Derby Grade I race in New South Wales on April 21st. Some horses he would be racing against were graded winners and some were boasting huge earnings, but Kirby didn’t care. He burst out of the gate and landed the number four spot on the inside. He held into the first turn, but then the field started to pick up the pace. Kirby was still in fourth, but the distance between him and the leader was opening up. Passed the half way marker Kirby turned on the heat and thundered up through the competition. In the twelfth and final furlong Kirby’s Best Yet was all alone with nearly five lengths between him and some of the best horses in south pacific. The Derby cup was taken from the favored turf monster, Mambo Wildcat, by a gangly brown colt that, before then, had never run in a graded race.

There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Kirby was turf machine, but the question of dirt was one that could not go unanswered. The win in Australia was so impressive that the idea that he may even be better in the dirt was more than what Ojai Valley could handle. Less than one month later Kirby’s Best Yet found himself in the gate with a seemingly endless yellow path in front of him. By now Kirby’s prowess on the turf was well known in the racing and sport circles alike. He was entered in the Cozzerous Challenge as the favorite to win, but filling the other gates at the Taiwan National Race Park was some what of a challenge. Only five other horses dared to face the brown beast even though there was a very real chance that the Kirby would hate the dirt so much he might even go backwards. That would not be the case though. Out of the gate He pounced into the third spot and, as predictable as the sun, took the lead at the half way marker. His win was not as fast at the Graded I race before, but his margin was greater. With just a small patch of sweat under the saddle Kirby stood in the only place he knew of, the winner’s circle. He returned to the turf in his next race, but it was proved to the world that if there is land, Kirby’s Best Yet will dominate it.

The following month Kirby would fly to all the way to England to meet his second graded stakes competitors. In the Derby De English he would face old rivals, new talent, and more veterans. Despite the long trip from the south pacific Kirby’s appetite was ferocious, as always, for both feed and track. With a full field, Kirby burst out of the gate with grace and power. He fell into the familiar fourth spot and slowly moved up into the third with Rural Law and Synchronization as the only two standing between him and victory. Just as Kirby made his move into turbo mode, so did the leaders. All three barreled around the turn with Kirby’s Best Yet swinging to the outside. The field was moving fast, but while the leaders gained more speed Kirby gained even more and twice as fast. He pulled away from the leaders with more than a furlong to go and crossed the wire with his greatest lead yet of near six lengths.

Eight races and eight spectacular wins earns Kirby’s Best Yet the proud title of one of the sim’s best.
