Race favorite Mighty Hawk bided his time, then stormed down the stretch to capture this week’s Eastern Lake Memorial. The yielding track didn’t seem to bother him as he brought the race home after coming from the head of the mid pack. This was the six career stakes win for the five year old son of War Chant, and is his second consecutive at this level. That gives him his eighth victory in twenty two starts, and pushes his career earnings to the $415280 mark. It also helped to solidify his ranking in the long turf division, moving him to a rank of 34 among older males. Bettors didn’t break the bank this week, but had some modest gains, with the winner paying $7.50 $4.70 $3.20 across the board. He also contributed to a $9.90 exacta and a $75.30 trifecta.

El Gran Dushyantor nosed out to the early lead, but was no able to open any real kind of cushion with hard early pressure from Thunder and Tassominator G(IRE). He nursed a short lead until the five furlong mark, where Thunder took over and managed to open up a little breathing space as they moved into the second half of the race. Mighty Hawk made his move at the half, but Thunder gamely held off the rushing closer until they hit the top of the stretch. At that point, Mighty Hawk seemed to find another gear and stormed past the leader, to bring it home down the stretch. It was pretty much uncontested late, with Mighty Hawk crossing the wire three lengths ahead of second place Thunder. Tassominator G(IRE) held on the third place in this one, finishing nine and three quarters out at the wire.
