Ataun closed from the clouds to win by a head-bob over Passing Stone, both of whom just passed front-runner Henianlauch who was beaten by a quarter-length. The final time was slower than many expected from this talented 3yo crop, but the sheer excitement they generated more than made up for it.

On to Maryland two weeks later for the Middle Jewel, Ataun had the tables turned, but not by his nemesis Passing Stone. Indeed, the victor that day was Awesome Force. After an inexplicably poor performance in Kentucky, he put it all together for a brilliant1 3/4 length win. The final time was just two ticks off the stakes record, and served notice that this group of 3yos is among the best the sim has ever seen.

And now we complete the Triple Crown series. We have no Crown on the line this year, perhaps dampening some of the enthusiasm that rolled through the sim four years ago when I Seek U pulled off the hat trick of a lifetime. But just because the Crown is not up for grabs does not mean this race is like any other. Indeed, the mile-and-a-half race will test these colts like no other race they will ever face. Soon they’ll move into their summer campaigns, and begin to take on the older division, but for this moment they stand in the spotlight in one of the most prestigious races the sim has to offer.

The New Yorker is no easy race. Many runners are completing a grueling spring campaign. Their trainers focused on getting to the Bluegrass Derby, and then took on the Middle Jewel immediately after. To then regroup just three weeks later to run the longest race of their young lives is a true test; whoever runs under the wire in front will have his name etched in the sim history books alongside such greats as Tuff Enuff (2004), Macho Niner (2005), and Virtuoso (2006). Aside from earning a place in sim history, the winner of this G1 also earns the lion’s share of a $1million purse. Although the records are somewhat suspect, the official stakes record holder is Dirty Mat, who won in 2001 with a final time of 2:30.4.

The field:

1

Legendary Pegasus

Trainer

Jockey

Top SP

Record

Earnings

Odds

Div Rank

Snappa5

V Gardner

100

10:2-3-1

$309,220

10-1

34

Fusaichi Pegasus colt ran seventh in the Bluegrass, but skipped the Middle Jewel. The extra rest might prove to be the key to winning this grueling race.
