Welcome to Victoria for the second Graded race on todays card, the After Shave Sprint. Nice purse up for grabs today and with a full field of 14 runners, expect a real cavalry charge for the line. Lets take a look at the runners-<\/p>\n
IN POSITION(KY) (SKY CLASSIC x PHARLY(FR) x SHARPEN UP(GB)) maplefarms
Won one stakes as a 2 year old and won another first time up this year, but has been unable to take another, despite finishing in the money on all three tries. Has a best sp of 95 and likes to lead from the off. Has a decent chance of a top five but i’m not sure about the win.<\/p>\n
AGENT X(KY) (STORM CAT x MR. PROSPECTOR x NIJINSKY II) futurestar
Won a maiden and an allowance as a 2 year old but also finished in the money in a Grade III and Grade I. Has two placed efforts in Grade I’s this year over 7f and that has looked a little too far, confirmed by his Grade III second over 6.5f. This trip may be even more suitable and 16\/1 looks a big price. Can get a top five and maybe even a top three place.<\/p>\n
SEA KING CYCLONE(TUR) (STRIKE THE GOLD x GONE WEST x DANZIG) ydracing3
Has already run six times this year and apart from the first every run has been with a 90+ sp. Only managed a slightly disapointing third in his only graded try and was finishing fast over 7f latest when producing a 99sp. That was an excellent run but I wonder if todays trip might now be too short for him. Will be closing at the finish and will get a top five but i’m not sure he’ll catch the front runners over this trip.<\/p>\n
CHRISTMAS JOY(KY) (KITTEN’S JOY x FUSAICHI PEGASUS x RIVERMAN) empirez
Had won six from thirteen, including two stakes this year but his best sp is 93 and he hasn’t been improving at the rate of some of todays other runners. 93 will not be good enough today and while he’ll put up a solid run a personal best will be needed to even reach the money.<\/p>\n
SHY GENERAL(AUS) (GENERAL NEDIYM (AUS) x GONE WEST x BLUSHING GROOM(FR)) snappa3
A couple of good graded runs as a 2 year old were followed by two disapointing route runs as a 3 year old. His last two runs over sprint trips though have been much better with 95 and 96 sp’s. That puts him right up in the money here and with a little improvement he could be a real threat.<\/p>\n
VELOCITY ROGUE(KY) (SILVER GHOST x CAPOTE x WILD AGAIN) seedly
Won a Grade III over 6.5f second run this year but has not reached that level since. Has not been near the front at the end and he now looks as though he wants 8f plus. He stayed on for second over 7.5f latest which would seem to bear this out. This trip is too short and he’ll struggle to catch them today.<\/p>\n
JENNA’S DEPUTY(JPN) (FRENCH DEPUTY x REDOUTE’S CHOICE (AUS) x FAIRY KING) dowelly2
Already has won eight races but has no Graded wins and has looked below his 2 year old form this year. That said his last two runs have been better and he will be trying to lead from the front. Has an outside chance of some money, unless he can recapture his 2 year old form- he’d be a real threat on that.<\/p>\n
PAPER JESUS(NM) (QUINTON’S GOLD x UNBRIDLED x TOKATEE) troy5
Keely’s pride and joy and rightly so. Has won his last three with all sp’s being over 96 and looks on top form. Those runs alone say he can get a definate top three and any improvement could see him run away with this. Likes to sit just off the pace, ideal in a race like this and for me is the likely winner.<\/p>\n
DEMON’S DIRECT(KY) (AWESOME AGAIN x WAR CHANT x HALO) cougar
Had won half his races but never over a trip this short. Has looked great closing over 7f, including a 98sp which would give him a massive chance here. However the trip is a worry, especially since he likes to close- they may be too far gone for him to catch up. A conundrum this one, will either run them ragged or finish a fast closing fifth or six.<\/p>\n
LIGHT IN THE DARK(KY) (FORESTRY x DAYJUR x MAJESTIC LIGHT) ba
Has won six from ten, including four stakes but has never run in a grade race. This looks his trip but he hasn’t progressed as expected- he ran a 93 in his last 2 year old race and has only bettered that once this year. Should run a solid race but I don’t think he can get the win.<\/p>\n
NEW INFORMATION(MD) (POLISH MINER x ARCH x CHEQUER) bohemia
Another runner with some big sp’s his last three races but his last two were over 7f and that looked too short. He was furthe ahead at the line in his latest start than he was at the three quarter pole and the race before saw him closing at the end over 7f. Those sp’s make him a threat but for me he’s another who may get taken off his feet over this trip.<\/p>\n
SYN CITY(WA) (YOU AND I x NATIVE ROYALTY x STRIKE THE ANVIL) xxxstable
Was a really good 2 year old but has been shocking so far as a three year old. His three sp’s of 74, 85 and 81 are miles below this level and he looks to be up against it here.<\/p>\n
RAINBAND(AUS) (SPINNING WORLD x RAINBOW QUEST x DIXIELAND BAND) wulf
Had put up 90+ sp’s both races this year but on bot tries (over 6.5f and 7.5f) he has been closing at the end and is screaming out for 8f or even 9f. Will be taken off his feet here but look out for him stepped up in trip.<\/p>\n
LAUREANO(AUS) (LONHRO (AUS) x ROBERTO x MR. PROSPECTOR) scout4
Interesting this won, has won four from six and has three stakes wins this year. Has shown small but steady improvement with each run and although his best sp of 93 is below a place here, some more improvement could well see him in the money today.<\/p>\n
