SIRES, DAM SIRES and DAM’S DAM SIRES (Part 3)<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I offer part 3 of the new series. Our first horse comes from the great Galileo\/Sadler’s Wells sire line, before we get into Gleneagles it would be remiss of me not to show you a few details on 2 of the greatest sires in history and a broodmare of real\u00a0SIGNIFICANCE.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sadler’s Wells<\/span> – <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>was bred in the United States but raced in Europe, winning the 1984 <\/span><\/span>Irish 2000 Guineas<\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span><\/span>Eclipse Stakes<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Phoenix Champion Stakes<\/span><\/span><\/a>. He also finished second in the Prix du Jockey Club and the <\/span><\/span>King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes<\/span><\/span><\/a>. He was named the champion miler in France, and was rated sixth overall in the International Classification for 1984.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Despite his success as a runner, it is as a sire that Sadler’s Wells is best known. He was the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0a record-setting 14 times, including 13 titles in a row. At the time of his death, he had sired 323 stakes winners \u2014 only <\/span><\/span><\/span>Danehill<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0sired more. Sadler’s Wells was also a notable sire of sires, including\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Galileo<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Montjeu<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0in Europe, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>El Prado<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the United States. He helped reverse a trend from the middle of the twentieth century where many of Europe’s most successful racehorses were exported to stand in the United States and later Japan.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 1985, Sadler’s Wells was syndicated by Coolmore for \u20ac800,000 a share (total value of \u20ac32m)<\/span><\/span><\/span>and stood for an initial fee of IR\u00a3125,000. He was an immediate success when his first crop reached racing age in 1988, led by <\/span><\/span><\/span>In the Wings<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Old Vic<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>. Two other colts from that crop, Scenic and Prince Of Dance, dead-heated in the 1988\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Dewhurst Stakes<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0In 1989 with only two crops of racing age, he set a world record by having 11 stakes winners in one year, an exceptional achievement at a time when foal crops were much smaller than today. For 1990, his stud fee increased to \u00a3150,000 with a book of 65 mares. Eamonn Phelan of Coolmore commented, “Very few stallions get offspring like themselves, but this fellow does. He\u2019s so tough and very well bred as well as being very sound.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 1990, his daughter Salsabil won the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>1000 Guineas<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Epsom Oaks<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Irish Derby<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, which helped propel Sadler’s Wells to his first champion sire title.\u00a0He went on to be\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Champion Sire in Great Britain & Ireland<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0a record 14 times, including 13 years in a row from 1992 to 2004. The previous record of 13 titles was set by\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Highflyer<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the 18th century.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sadler’s Wells has been called one of the most influential sires of all times, especially based on his record in the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>English Classic Races<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>He is the sire of 12 English Classic winners, a number comparable with leading sires\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Stockwell<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>St Simon<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0from the 19th century.<\/span><\/span><\/span>His English Classic winners are:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Salsabil<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1000 Guineas, Oaks),\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Intrepidity<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Oaks),\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Moonshell<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Oaks),<\/span><\/span><\/span>Entrepreneur<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(2000 Guineas),\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>King of Kings<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(2000 Guineas),\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Imagine<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Oaks),\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Galileo<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Derby),\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Milan<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(St Leger),\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>High Chaparral<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Derby),\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Brian Boru<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(St Leger),\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Refuse to Bend<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(2000 Guineas) and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Alexandrovna<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Oaks).<\/span><\/span><\/span>In 2001, his daughters swept the top three positions in the Oaks.<\/span><\/span><\/span>He also sired 14 winners of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Irish Classics<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>In 1999, his sons finished one-two-three in the Irish Derby.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

By 2001, his stud fee had increased to \u00a3200,000 with a book of roughly 200 mares each year.<\/span><\/span><\/span>With the increased number of offspring each year, his number of stakes winners began to rapidly accelerate. Sadler’s Wells briefly held the all-time record for the number of stakes winners when Roman Saddle become his 177th stakes winner in July 2001. Mr. Prospector had held the previous record with 176 stakes winners. Sadler’s Wells sired his 200th stakes winner in 2002, becoming the first stallion to achieve that landmark.<\/span><\/span><\/span>However,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Danehill<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0then passed him, reaching the 300 stakes winner mark in 2005,<\/span><\/span><\/span>a level Sadler’s Wells would achieve in 2008.<\/span><\/span><\/span>At the time of his death in 2011, Sadler’s Wells had sired 323 stakes winners, including 73 individual Group 1 winners on the flat.<\/span><\/span><\/span>He also sired several <\/span><\/span><\/span>National Hunt<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0winners, most notably Istbraq.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Galileo\"<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Galileo<\/span> – <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>(foaled 30 March 1998) is a retired Irish Thoroughbred racehorse\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and active sire. In a racing career which lasted from October 2000 until October 2001 he ran eight times and won six races. He is best known for winning the Epsom Derby, Irish Derby Stakes<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in 2001 and for his rivalry with the Goldolphin\u00a0<\/span><\/span>champion<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0Fantastic Light<\/b><\/span><\/span>. Since his retirement, Galileo has become one of the leading sires in the world and is the sire of multiple champion including Frankel, New Approach<\/span><\/span>, Australia<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span>and Minding<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He was sired by Sadler’s Wells\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>out of the mare Urban Sea<\/span><\/span><\/span>. His breeders were David Tsui, the owner of Urban Sea, and “Orpendale”, a name used by the Coolmore Stud\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>organization\u00a0for some of their breeding interests. He was described as a three-year-old as being “one of the most impeccably bred horses in training”.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sadler’s Wells (1981-2011) won three\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Group One<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0races in 1984 and went on to sire the winners of over 2,000 races, including more than 130 at<\/span><\/span>Group One<\/span><\/span><\/a>\/<\/span><\/span>Grade I<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0level.<\/span><\/span>[4]<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0He was the most successful sire in the history of British racing, being the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0a record 14 times.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Urban Sea (1989-2009) won the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0in 1993 and went on to become an outstanding\u00a0<\/span><\/span>broodmare<\/span><\/span><\/a>. Apart from Galileo, she was the dam of the Derby winner\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sea The Stars<\/span><\/span><\/a>, and the Grade I winners\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Black Sam Bellamy<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(<\/span><\/span>Tattersalls Gold Cup<\/span><\/span><\/a>) and My Typhoon (<\/span><\/span>Diana Stakes<\/span><\/span><\/a>), as well as All Too Beautiful (Group race winner, Group One placed) and Melikah (Listed race winner, Group One placed).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Owned by\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Sue Magnier<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Michael Tabor<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, he was sent into training by\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Aidan O’Brien<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Ballydoyle<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and ridden in all but one of his races by\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Michael Kinane<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Galileo is known for his relaxed, professional\u00a0behavior\u00a0and even temperament. Noel Stapleton, his long-time handler at Coolmore\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>Stud<\/span><\/span><\/span>, calls him a creature of habit. “He is a true gentleman,” said Stapleton, “and I think he knows how important he is.”<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He is one of several horses to have borne the name of Galileo. The most notable “other” Galileo was a Polish-bred gelding which won the Grade I\u00a0<\/span><\/span>RSA Novices’ Hurdle<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0at the 2002\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Cheltenham Festival<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Galileo was retired to stand as a stallion for the Coolmore Stud. He has operated as a “shuttle” stallion, standing at Coolmore’s main farm at Fethard, County Tipperary\u00a0Ireland during the Northern Hemisphere breeding season and moving to its Australian branch in the Hunter Region, New South Wales\u00a0for the Southern Hemisphere breeding season.\u00a0However, since 2012, he has stood exclusively in Ireland.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His 2008 fee for a live foal was reported to be 225,000 Euros.<\/span><\/span><\/span>[31]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0His 2009 stud fee was reduced to 175,000 Euros reflecting the general trend in stallion fees. In 2014 his stud fee was set at 350,000 euros.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s have a quick look at Galileo’s mother.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Urban Sea<\/span> – <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>(February 18, 1989 \u2013 2 March 2009) was a French Thoroughbred racemare\u00a0<\/span><\/span>best known for winning France’s most prestigious race in 1993 and for her importance as a world class broodmare. She is one of only two mares to ever produce two Epsom Derby\u00a0<\/span><\/span>winners, namely Galileo<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and Sea The Stars.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0None have produced three winners of this race.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Bred by\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Paul de Moussac’s<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0Marystead Farm, she was by\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Miswaki<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, a son of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Leading sire in North America<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Mr. Prospector<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, her dam was Marystead’s\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>mare<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, Allegretta by Lombard. Miswaki raced in\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Europe<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and won the 1980 Grade 1\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Prix de la Salamandre<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

French trainer\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Jean Lesbordes<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0conditioned a small stable of Thoroughbreds in France for\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Hong Kong<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0businessman\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>David Tsui<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and in 1990 he purchased Urban Sea at the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Deauville yearling sale<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0on behalf of Tsui for t<\/span><\/span><\/span>he price of\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>FF<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>280,000 <\/span><\/span><\/span>(approximately US$50,000).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Owner David Tsui sent Urban Sea to Ireland<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0as a broodmare\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>for his Sunderland Holdings where she became one of the world’s most successful broodmares. Her 1997 filly, Melikah, was auctioned in 1998 for \u20ac1,500,000, the highest ever price paid for a yearling at the Deauville sales. Her 2002 filly, My Typhoon<\/span><\/span><\/span>, set a then-record price for a filly foal of US$2,955,000 when sold in December at the Tattersalls Sale\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>to Live Oak Stud of Ocala, Florida.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0When Urban Sea’s 2006 foal Sea The Stars\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>won the Epsom Derby\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>in 2009, she became one of the few mares to have foaled two Derby winners. Sea The Stars went on to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>making Urban Sea only the second Arc de Triomphe winning mare to foal a winner of that race (Detroit – dam of Carnegie is the other). Sea the Stars is considered by many to be one of the greatest racehorses of all time.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2009, she delivered a bay colt by Invincible Spirit, later named Born to Sea, she died on 2 Mar 2009 as a complication of foaling.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He has everything anyone could wish for in a young stallion \u2013 pedigree, performance, precocious speed and a sound constitution. He also has enough stouter elements in his pedigree to suggest he will have no problem siring middle-distance performers.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His pedigree could hardly be bettered. His sire Galileo has secured his eighth sires\u2019 championship in nine, proving as dominant as his own sire, the 14-times champion Sadler\u2019s Wells. And Gleneagles\u2019 dam You\u2019resothrilling is a Gr.2-winning sister to Giant\u2019s Causeway, North America\u2019s champion sire in 2009, 2010 and 2012.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Gleneagles was precocious enough to gain his first success in the June of his first season and he progressed so well that his winning sequence would have stretched to eight, but for the intervention of the Longchamp stewards after the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. Although he lost that Gr.1 victory, he still has four others, including the 2,000 Guineas, Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St James\u2019s Palace Stakes. With a record like that, he qualifies as one of Galileo\u2019s fastest sons.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Intensive\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>veterinary<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0treatment and three operations were not sufficient to save Dubai Millennium, and he was\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>euthanized<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0whilst still under anaesthetic on 30 April. He was buried at the Dalham Hall Stud.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

His only crop of foals produced several winners including the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Prix Daniel Wildenstein<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0winner, Echo of Light and, most notably\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Dubawi<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Dubawi won\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>National Stakes<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Irish 2,000 Guineas<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Prix Jacques Le Marois<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>and, he went on to sire the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>2,000 Guineas<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0winner\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Makfi<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and many other important winners<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Should have a nice Sim rating as he has produced some top stock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Interesting horse, there will always been a WHAT IF tag associated with him, remember he sired the great Dubawi before his premature death. What we do know, a great racehorse, threw a great racehorse and sire, in type he was special, have you ever seen a longer rein, stands over ground and has a broodmare sire pedigree.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Recommendations \u2013 I would principally concentrate on Turf breeding but wouldn’t be afraid to go dirt. Will work equally well with most sires, would be looking for miler+ types, would expect to take a little time and need ground. Would be fairly easy to breed with. Galileo and his son’s look ideal to use with this horse. Breeders seem to be a little stand offish but I wouldn’t hesitate in giving him a top pedigree page, give him a try and is cheap considering.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ALLEGED<\/span> – <\/b>(4 May 1974 \u2013 2000) was an American-bred, Irish-trained thoroughbred racehorse\u00a0<\/span>best known for winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe\u00a0<\/span>in 1977 and 1978. He was only beaten once in his career, when he was 2nd in the 1977 St Leger after starting the 4\/7\u00a0favorite.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alleged was a bay horse bred by June McKnight. He was sold twice as a young horse, being sold for $34,000 as a yearling\u00a0and $175,000 as a two-year-old.\u00a0On the second occasion he was bought by Robert Sangster\u00a0and his associates and sent to be trained in Europe. According to Sangster, the original intention was to race Alleged in California, but it was felt that the colt’s forelegs would not stand up to the stresses of American racing.\u00a0Alleged was trained at Ballydoyle\u00a0in Ireland by Vincent O’Brien.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Racing career<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Alleged did not appear in a racecourse until November 1976, when he won a Maiden\u00a0over seven furlongs at the Curragh.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As a three-year-old he won the Ballydoyle Stakes at Leopardstown Racecourse<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0in April and then created a 33\/1 upset by winning the Royal Whip Stakes\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>at the Curragh, beating his stable companion Valinsky who started\u00a0favorite. Alleged then won the Gallinule Stakes\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>and was then rested until August when he won the Great Voltigeur Stakes<\/span><\/span><\/span>. Alleged started\u00a0favorite\u00a0for the St Leger Stakes\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>but finished second to Dunfermline<\/span><\/span><\/span>. In the 1977 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Alleged led for most of the way and won by one and a half lengths from\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Balmerino<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At four, Alleged was unbeaten in three races. He won the Royal Whip Stakes again, but then missed the summer as it was felt that he would be unsuited by the firm ground. He returned in autumn to win the Prix du Prince d’Orange<\/span><\/span><\/span>. He then won his second Arc, winning by two lengths from the fillies Trillion and Dancing Maid.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Stud Career<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Retired after the 1978 racing season, he stood at stud\u00a0at Walmac International\u00a0near Lexington, Kentucky\u00a0and sired four champions. Among them was Miss Alleged\u00a0who won several Graded Stakes races\u00a0in France and the United States\u00a0including the 1991 Breeders’ Cup Turd\u00a0and the Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes. She was voted the 1991 Eclipse Award for Outstanding Female Turf Horse. Other winners included Midway Lady, Shantou, Legal Case\u00a0and Law Society. Alleged is the grandsire of 2005 Grand National\u00a0winner, Hedgehunter\u00a0and dam sire of 2010\u00a0winner, Don’t Push It.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Alleged died in 2000 from the infirmities of old age and is buried at Walmac International.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A nice DDS to use for inbred front ends, will add some stamina and cheap, he is tagged as DR in the Sim but I use him turf only. Real value I think and I have put my money where my mouth is, looking forward to some nice results.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
