Four times in its six year history, Pennsylvania<\/st1:place><\/st1:State>\u2019s Grade I lool Oaks Stakes has served as the final prep race for the winner of the Kentucky Oaks.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>The other two years?\u00a0 <\/SPAN>The second place Kentucky Oaks runner prepped with this race.<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

Interestingly, none of those six fillies exited the lool with a win.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This race has had a history of upsets and longshots \u2013 no favorite has ever won, and only two winners ever had more than one more graded win.<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

All of those factors make this a tough race to predict and a desirable race to enter.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Twenty one owners entered, but of course only fourteen get to start.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This field is exceptional<\/P>

She hasn\u2019t looked sharp in her three races since turning three, and except for a win in a four horse listed stakes, she hasn\u2019t won since June.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>That\u2019s getting frightfully close to a year.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She has very nice earnings per race, but that has everything to do with her stellar performances last year all the way through to a third place finish in the Breeders Bowl Juvenile Filly.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Needs to wake up.<\/P>

Could not match the rally of several, including Waki Slam, in her last race and was overmatched in general when she tried running against older in January.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She may well be better than those two races showed.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She was still fairly close in her last, and what three year old is ready to go against older horses in a graded stakes in January?\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She was making progress late last year\u2026.<\/P>

Grabbed the lead late but could not hold on two races back, beating Sisson\u2019s Chant for the place in the Sweet Nanette.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>That\u2019s worth putting on a resume: only two fillies have finished in front of Sisson\u2019s Chant in the past 11 months.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Last time Roots was a decent fourth in a tough Fantasia field, though she was beaten by both Waki Slam and Pravda.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She\u2019s still looking for her first stakes win, but she\u2019s belonged in every race she\u2019s entered, and she belongs here.<\/P>

Stable\u2019s history offers a primer on how to handle a good horse through a long productive career.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>With five wins and eight in-the-money finishes in nine starts, this one looks like she\u2019s another good one for the barn.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>After her win against a decent listed field last time, she makes her graded debut.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She fits with these, has excellent connections, and is showing steady recent improvement.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Just what you want.<\/P>

She ran a decent fifth in her graded debut against a field just as tough as this last time.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Improvement off that effort clearly puts this one, the 14th<\/SUP> and last qualifier, in the hunt.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>That she\u2019s run a triple digit speed figure counts for her.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This race is so wide open; it\u2019s tough to know what to do with her.<\/P>

Perfect seven for seven in the money record on dirt will be challenged today as she takes on much better than she\u2019s been facing.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Coming off her best race, where she beat a nine filly field where she was the only stakeswinner.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Still, while she hasn\u2019t been beating much, she\u2019s at least been beating them and showing recent improvement.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>It will undoubtedly take a triple digit figure to win this, and it\u2019s doubtful she\u2019s ready to do that.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>But she\u2019s game enough to maybe get a piece of the purse.<\/P>

Apparently took the name of the Backward Gal Stakes literally.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Boy, one loss by 38 lengths, and the oddsmakers sure take it out on you next time.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She\u2019s had ten weeks to heal from that debacle, and if she\u2019s ready, you have a chance at an $80 win payoff on the number six rated filly in the world.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>In her penultimate race she won the prestigious Movieland Starlet.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>If her speed figures seem light, remember they\u2019re from her two year old season.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Gimme Vince Young\u2019s speed figures have improved by 13 points since the Movieland Starlet.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>A similar improvement for Katherine would give her the biggest figure here.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>There is certainly no guarantee, but if she\u2019s matured during her recuperation, she offers a very rare betting opportunity.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This is no $80 filly.<\/P>
