The Future Stakes (Grade II)<\/strong><\/p>\n

2 Year Olds | 7 Furlongs | Dirt | $375,000<\/p>\n

Trainers with prized two year old colts have an eye towards the future and the West Coast hosting of the Breeders Bowl, but before they can get there, they will need to put up an impressive performance in The Future Stakes here at Belmont on Saturday, September 17th. This has the potential to be an exciting race with a mix of talent ranging from former claimers to earners of more than $500,000:<\/p>\n

COPIAGUE (19\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

An up and comer who just won his second race ever, COPIAGUE broke his maiden on turf in his first race. That Delaware Park race is an interesting one because it seems to indicate that owner\/trainer\u00a0tonyalb<\/em> had some belief that this French-bred son of REDOUTE’S CHOICE and OASIS DREAM (GB) dam D HOUSE UGLY T (x DARK ANGEL (IRE)) that this horse was meant for the turf. Despite that, this horse has since raced primarily on dirt with moderate success, running 1-2-1 in five races. Ultimately, I like this horse, but I think it is meant for turf, and for that reason I cannot pick this horse to compete against colts bred for the dirt.<\/p>\n

SOUL FOR SEATTLE (47\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

SOUL FOR SEATTLE is a graywolf17<\/i> owned and trained colt sired by SOUL CITY (IRE). While this horse has won four races, two of his nine races have been in fields greater than five horses. Of the two races with more than five horses, SOUL FOR SEATTLE has finished in last in a 14-horse field and 7th of 11 horses. The placement of this horse is a little strange, and I think at this point, the horse is just outmatched.<\/p>\n

DARK NOS BEST (16\/1)<\/b><\/p>\n

This\u00a0deeprock44<\/em> trained horse has progressed nicely in just four races. \u00a0However, this bay colt by DADDY NOSE BEST and out of LOOKIN AT LIFE has never won a race, which instills a level of confidence in a horse when they are competing at the Grade II level. I will most certainly take a second and third look when I make my picks, but I think until this horse gets a win under his belt, I may avoid it.<\/p>\n

GHOST TRIPPI (6\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

GHOSTZAPPER is having one of his best 2 year old seasons in 2016, and GHOST TRIPPI is a big contributor to that success in just four races. This\u00a0ddstables13<\/em> trainee has never finished outside of the money, and most recently placed in The Stanford, a Grade II stakes at Saratoga. GHOST TRIPPI now adds a furlong to his distance and gets a little faster track here at Belmont, so I would expect this horse to step up, especially after a 31-60 day rest. This is definitely a colt to keep your eye both this weekend and in the future.<\/p>\n

SHERPA RUSTY EX (7\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Being a newcomer to the sim, I haven’t fully developed an appreciation for The Equinics races. That level of respect has been diminished further by my handicapping for the Black Type Bugler, where I have seen multiple horses negatively impacted by Equinics races. SHERPA RUSTY EX (EXCEED AND EXCEL x GONE WEST x NUREYEV) is no different in that regard; this\u00a0elida2<\/em> trainee made a huge splash in his first two races, breaking his maiden then going on to take the Future Dane Dirt in Denmark. Now in the states, this horse looks to get back on track in his fourth race out. Definitely a runner to watch.<\/p>\n

LARCENYINHISHEART (8\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Can LARCENYINHISHEART steal The Future Stakes? It’s definitely a possibility, as this colt is on a hot streak after winning 3 of his last 4. The only time he missed the winner’s circle in those four races, the LIAM’S MAP colt finished 1.25 lengths off the winner in the Grade II Faber College Juvenile. I still cannot tell whether or not this horse was meant for more distance than the 5-6 furlongs he has been running. In the Golf Ball Dirt Juvenile, LARCENYINHISHEART lost a quarter length to his second place foe in the last furlong.<\/p>\n

BUZZING QUALITY (6\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

BUZZING QUALITY (QUALITY ROAD x DEPUTY MINISTER x STORM CAT) debuted in April at a little known Minnesota track and has quickly made a name for himself, most recently taking show in the Grade II Closest Friend Stakes, and it seemed like the\u00a0gipper3\u00a0<\/em>trainee could have used a little more distance to get the job done. He’ll get that added distance on Saturday, and this horse has competed when breaking from the middle of the pack. He’ll sit a little off the pace and make his move in the middle of the turn, really turning on the jets down the stretch. This horse has a ton of power, which will translate well to longer distances, but for now it will work well as he looks to take down his first graded stakes.<\/p>\n

MUNHAI CHACHIN (12\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

MUNHAI CHACHIN need a little more distance to get it done in the Grade II Stanford at Saratoga in July, but the jump in class may have too much for the\u00a0zurdok<\/em> trainee. I have a distinct feeling that this horse is going to disrupt a lot of exotics this weekend, but I’m not quite sure that I’m ready to throw down a win bet on this horse. MUNHAI CHACHIN loves to viciously stalk the pace, and if a swift pace is set here at Belmont on Saturday, I think this colt is going to fade down the stretch in his first 7 furlong competition.<\/p>\n

GAIUS SUETONIUS (11\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

A monster with breeding that would indicate it could perform even better on turf, GAIUS SUETONIUS has won his only two races, already bringing down $60,000 in earnings. This horse is getting 11\/1 odds because it doesn’t have as much of a race history as some of his other foes, but that means you are either going to get a really good price or this horse is going to drop come race time. I really like this horse a lot because it’s one of the few that has actually gone the distance that The Future Stakes offers tomorrow.<\/p>\n

EMPIRE LOGO TED (11\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some great breeding has brought us a great 2 year old in EMPIRE LOGO TED (EMPIRE MAKER x SYMBOLI KRIS S x AWESOME AGAIN). This\u00a0stableted\u00a0<\/em>made a huge jump in his fifth race where he brought home the South From Car Dirt Juvenile in Norway. We’ll see what this colt can do now that he is back racing in the States.<\/p>\n

MONSTROUS CAUSE (8\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

MONSTROUS CAUSE is a three-time winner, stakes winner, and has placed in a graded stakes race, but none of those wins have come at a distance longer than 5.5 furlongs. In the American Pharoah Stakes at Del Mar, the\u00a0amir<\/em> trainee wired the field, but tired at the end, where he started to give up a quarter length to RAZOV, who has gone on to race at 7 furlongs. While his figures jumped in his 6 furlong Equinics race, I am not sure yet how much I like this horse at a longer sprint distance.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

GOLDEN PHAROAH (10\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

GOLDEN PHAROAH (AMERICAN PHAROAH x PHONE TRICK x STRIKE THE GOLD) wired an Equinics (Grade I) field of 2 year olds for his first ever win, and instantly was on every Derby handicapper’s radar. This\u00a0tipeeraryfarms5<\/em> trainee needs an extremely good break, similar to what he got in the Equinics, in order to set the pace that leaves the rest of the field behind. It’s going to be hard to leave this horse out of my bets this weekend, and I’m not certain yet on how exactly I’m going to use him.<\/p>\n

STURDY GEM (7\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Form is everything, and STURDY GEM comes in on a three-win hot streak, most recently winning the 6.5 furlong Trifecta Taxes Dirt Juvenile in Iowa. ESKENDEREYA has seen decreasing quality in his sires recently, but the\u00a0bond77\u00a0<\/em>trainee seems to be an outlier, and has to be included in your bets this weekend; this colt is my favorite to win.<\/p>\n

WOLF OF THE CASINO (15\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just four months ago, this\u00a0graywolf12<\/em> was running in a $60,000 maiden claimer. Now he’s getting 15\/1 odds in a Grade II stakes, and his connections have high hopes for this CASINO HOST colt. While this horse has won at the 7 furlong distance, I find him too inconsistent to bet this weekend.<\/p>\n
