That means more times than not we are looking at sires from not so popular sire lines. This week we take a rare look at a son of Mr. Prospector. Distant View despite producing some very nice horses in real life and some good horses in the sim is a sire that you can get for less than 100 BPs at the end of the week. Is he the forgotten son of Mr. Prospector?

Real Life- Distant View is by Mr. Prospector. His dam sire Irish River (FR) (Never Bend) and his dam’s dam sire is Lyphard (Northern Dancer). His dosage index is 3.76 indicating a nice mix of speed and stamina. His runners have been versatile winning on dirt or turf in sprints and classic distances.

As a race horse Distant View was a top miler that ran seven times as a three year old winning the grade I Sussex Stakes and also placed in the grade I St James Palace Stakes. He competed in the 2,000 <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Guineas that year as a maiden finishing fifth and would go on to defeat Grand Lodge, and Breeder’s Cup mile winner Barathea later that year.

In his first crop of runners he produced five graded or group winners including Observatory. Observatory defeated Giant’s Causeway in G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes denying Giant’s Causeway his sixth straight group I win in 2000. Distant View’s most popular American runner is Sightseek who was one of the top dirt mares winning seven grade I races in her career.

It is interesting to note that most of his graded stakes winners were bred back to Northern Dancer in a way so that it created a 5X3 inbreeding to Northern Dancer and probably more importantly a 4X5 inbreeding to Native Dancer.

Sim Life – Distant View has been treated fairly well by the sim. With one hundred and ten runners (17 2yr olds) he has eight stakes winners, and forty seven allowance winners. Solid numbers in the sim and his runners have run well on turf and dirt. His dirt runners tend to be faster sprinting while his turf runners have been solid at distances.

In three of his eight stakes winners a son of Northern Dancer was used creating the real life inbreeding that has worked. Sons of Mr. Prospector Unbridled and Unbridled’s Song have each produced a stakes winner. When you look at his runners over all it is clear that son’s or grandson’s of Northern Dancer get very solid results when used as dam sires with Distant View. If they are not stakes runners a majority are allowance winners. Breeding back to Mr. Prospector has really not been nearly as successful.

Breeding Suggestions – The real life breeding trends carried over to the sim kind of sort of so that seems like a great place to start. Son’s of Northern Dancer, and grandson’s of Northern Dancer. Sadler’s Wells might be a very interesting choice but other sons I like are Storm Bird, The Minstrel, Danzig, Nureyev, Topsider, Secreto, Shareef Dancer, Unfuwain, and El Gran Senor. Grandson’s Deputy Minister, and Summer Squall have already been used with some success in the sim. Storm Cat, Danehill, Theatrical, El Prado, Langfuhr, and Royal Academy could all be good choices.

I think other Native Dancer line sires not through Raise a Native could be solid choices. Sharpen Up (GB) would create a 4X4 inbreeding to Native Dancer. Sea-Bird could be used in the dam’s dam sire slot to create a 4X5 inbreeding to Native Dancer. Son’s of Sharpen Up (GB) that seem solid are Diesis (GB) and Trempolino.

The Buckpasser line has always mixed well with Mr.Prospector, as well as Secretariat (Bold Ruler). I do not really like Seattle Slew line sires here but I do like Seattle Slew himself. The Ribot, Roberto, Damascus should all be considered.

Distant View (1684) X Sharpen Up (GB) (5761) X His Majesty (2803)

Distant View (1684) X Unfuwain (6862) X Grey Dawn II (2602)

Distant View (1684) X Storm Bird (6271) X Le Fabuleux (3451)

What to Expect – Distant Views runners seem to be best as three and four year olds. His two year olds are solid but not overwhelming but they should really start to pick things up in the last few months and carry that over to their three year old season. I think his runners should be better over a mile however he has produced some solid sprinters. If you get a turf runner it is likely to be a solid one and with the right dam sires you could have a classic runner.

As always if you have any questions, comments, or sire requests please drop me a line at mcbwildcat@aol.com.
