Superfilly Handicap (Grade I)<\/strong><\/p>\n

3+ Year Old | 1 1\/16 miles | Dirt | $750,000<\/em><\/p>\n

Three months after we saw Irad Ortiz, Jr. navigate CREATOR to the winner’s circle in the Belmont Stakes and MISSION INTHE RAIN take The New Yorker (Grade I), we return to Long Island, New York for opening weekend at Belmont Park. With that comes the running of the Superfilly Handicap, a 8.5 furlong race that pits the old timers versus the up and coming 3 year olds.<\/p>\n

TWO WEDDINGS (9\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

At 14\/1 odds, TWO WEDDINGS broke from the 19th post position and closed from 11 lengths back to finish out the exotics in an Equinics race at the beginning of August. That was TWO WEDDINGS’ first foray into Grade I competition, and she fared well considering the circumstances. Other graded stakes races has seen her sneak onto the tote board, including one 8.5 furlong race against other 3 year olds and upward. Though it hasn’t raced extensively at this distance, I believe the\u00a0handshob11<\/em> trainee and daughter of TANINO GIMLET will respond well to the length. This post position will allow an easy break towards the back of the pack, which is the trip she wants.<\/p>\n

THREE OLIVE BARB (12\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

THREE OLIVE BARB has accumulated three Grade II wins and over $1,000,000 in winnings, but has only hit the board in 53% of her trips. The\u00a0barbie<\/em> trainee has faced primarily Grade II class talent over the course of the last year, with the exception of two Grade I races that resulted in a 2nd place finish and a 13th place finish. The second place finish was in the soft dirt at Saratoga towards the end of July, so the moderate change in surface at Belmont could help the horse’s speed as she stalks the pace and looks to capitalize at the top of the stretch.<\/p>\n

BLUE COMET (10\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mrxrayz11<\/em> has bounced BLUE COMET around in class and at tracks from Iowa to New York to Kentucky to Argentina and now back to New York. What’s come of her last seven races? Zero wins and one show. However, that one 3rd place finish comes in a Grade I competition right here at Belmont, and at the highest speed figure this horse has ever put up. Can she run a repeat performance tomorrow?<\/p>\n

FLASHFREEZE (10\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

FLASHFREEZE (TEOFILO x MINESHAFT x STORM CAT) is coming off a Grade III win in the Rose Garden Handicap just two and a half weeks ago, so while this filly is feeling a little cocky, I am suspect as to how she will respond to the short rest and travel from Mexico. On the flip side,\u00a0mabee99<\/em> gave her horse the same amount of rest last year before the Superfilly, and FLASHFREEZE finished just a length and a half behind the winner. Adding to her odds is her mount, H. Desitter, who guided her to victory in the Rose Garden.<\/p>\n

CALL IT OFF (34\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

This 3 year old filly trained by\u00a0flagdown2<\/em> is still fresh and getting her legs underneath her as a race horse. Her performance and results have been varied over the year, so it’s unclear which CALL IT OFF we are going to get on Saturday. If the filly that finished 3rd in the Mountainous Derby decides to show up, this horse could pull of an upset win. The uncertainty gives me pause, and I’m unlikely to include this horse in my picks.<\/p>\n

WIDOW’S COLONY (4\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thethumb15\u00a0<\/em>has entered the morning line favorite in WIDOW’S COLONY, a scratch bred 4 year old daughter of SPEIGHTSTOWN (PLEASANT COLONY x LYPHARD). Aside from an Equinics cluster, this filly has been on fire in 2016 with Grade I, II and listed wins, and earning close to $2,000,000. This horse is a favorite of mine to win because she’s so agile, and will have no issue starting in the middle of 14 horses. V. Elliott, who had her mount in the Maryland Distaff, once again climbs aboard to guide this horse to the winner’s circle.<\/p>\n

OIL FOREVER (14\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

OIL FOREVER is coming off a long, three month break after a series of middling performances dating back to the Breeders Bowl Distaff in October 2015. The final straw was a 9th place finish to WIDOW’S COLONY here at Belmont in the Steadhemp\/Mike Phipps Handicap (Grade I). The last time this filly took a break longer than a month, she bounced back gracefully in The Bra Strap (Grade I), which turned out to be her last race. We’ll find out tomorrow if Grade I competition is too much for her first trip out in three months.<\/p>\n

ROBERTO’S QUEEN (7\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Soonerslew\u00a0<\/em>hopes to get ROBERTO’S QUEEN (MACHO UNO x GONE WEST x ROBERTO) back on track Saturday, as the horse has not seen the winner’s circle since the Grade III Dirtydirtydishragyou Stakes in April. D. Fendlay, Jr. keeps his mount from the Equinics race, and has told the Black Type Bugler that this horse has been putting in great workouts since she shipped here in early August. A lot of bettors are going to write this horse off because of recent finishes, but I suspect she could surprise a lot of folks tomorrow.<\/p>\n

HAYLEY TURNER (14\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

HAYLEY TURNER had a major drop off in performance as she attempted to jump up in class to a Grade I in the Go For The Gold Stakes at Saratoga. It’s unclear what prompted the last pace finish, but her connections determined that Saratoga was not the place for her anymore, so the logical next step was to ship her here at Belmont to regain form, but I’d argue that HAYLEY TURNER may not have lust for any New York track- she finished 10th and 5th in her lat two trips out at Belmont, though they were by a combined 5 lengths. We’ll find out tomorrow if this filly needs to seek out a different region to race.<\/p>\n

RITUALISATION (7\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

RITUALISATION ships to Belmont from overseas, where she has been putting in some really good work at the allowance level. Most recently, she scored a win in the Grade II Snownut Handicap in Spain. Most of her races have been in the United Arab Emirates or Japan, so there shouldn’t be an adjustment to left-handed turns. I have a sneaking suspicion this horse is in the type of form that could see her bringing home a Grade I win tomorrow.<\/p>\n

SWAPSCO KITTY (17\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

SWAPSCO KITTY has been the highest performing 3 year old filly this year, prompting her connections to place her against the boys in the Haskell, Middle Jewel, and Bluegrass. None of those races resulted in wins for the filly, but she’s put in solid work against the opposite sex in 2015, winning the Sand Castle Derby and Movieland Futurity. Her most recent win comes right here at Belmont in the Chestnut Stakes, but her mount in that race W. McClendon was not brought back to ride again, her connections opting instead for V. Jennings, a jockey that hasn’t been atop SWAPSCO KITTY since the Trixy Delight’s Special in August 2015. This is obviously a tremendous horse that has earned over $4,500,000, but it should not be overlooked that this horse has run 10 races in one year, all at the Grade I level. At some point, that level of competition introduces a level of wear and tear that can’t be maintained. Will the effects of that start to creep in this weekend? We’ll find out.<\/p>\n

UMEREZ (14\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nocalbred\u00a0<\/em>returns UMEREZ to dirt after a 10 furlong turf experiment during Del Mar’s summer meet. A few firsts for this horse: her first time in New York, her first time running 8.5 furlongs (she’s gone longer), and her first time with P. Wright aboard for the trip. This horse has a ton of speed up front, but has not really done a lot from outside posts like she has tomorrow. Normally, I would throw down some money on this filly, but I may stay away because of post position this weekend.<\/p>\n

RED’S VICTORY (10\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here is a horse that could shock everyone tomorrow. Just last year, RED’S VICTORY was running $50,000 claimers in Oregon while\u00a0cylia<\/em> was hoping she wouldn’t lose her horse to someone who didn’t see the promise in this daughter of RED GIANT. Since those days, she has gone on to become a consistent horse, finally winning a stakes race last month in Argentina, and at the Grade III level. In that race, she closed from 11.25 lengths behind to win it in 1:41.39, a pace not many other horses in this field have been able to keep up with. Watch out for this horse to come from way back to challenge.<\/p>\n

LIAM’S ROCK (10\/1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Liam5’s<\/em> filly faltered in the Grade I Steadhemp\/Mike Phipps Handicap here at Belmont in June, but that race is a major outlier in this horse’s career. One thing I keyed into when looking at this filly’s past performances: a 1st place finish in the Grade II Barbacoa Handicap that saw LIAM’S ROCK come from way back (11.25 lengths) to finish in 1:31.13. No matter the pace set tomorrow, this horse is up to the challenge.<\/p>\n
