The 8.5 furlong race traditionally features some of the best 3yo turf fillies the sim has to offer. Notable winners of this $500k race have included Vision of A Dancer (2001) , Shanrose Baby (2005), and Smackdown (2005). The stakes record of 1:42.1 was set by Grausturm in 2003. This year we have an awesome field, including the top two finishers in the Breeders Bowl Juvenile Filly Turf, a filly with a perfect 6 for 6 record, the fastest filly of 2007 at this surface/distance, and a lot of other talented entrants.

Hipica’s Tupungato is a 6-1 largely due to to her posting the second-highest SP of any 3yo turf filly this year in her last start. The Rahy filly (out of the off-track specialist mare Damage Control) started her career on dirt to moderate success, winning 2 of 8 starts with an additional 6 top 3s finishes. Unsatisfied with that, her owner switched the filly to the turf course and saw her take off. In her very first grass start she popped a 90SP going 8.5 with a beautiful front-running three-length win. Next was another allowance, which she won by a nose with an 83 going a mile. A bit longer was clearly better, so for her stakes debut she went back to 8.5. It was her first turf loss, but despite being outbroken she still held on gamely for second with an 89SP. Last time out she got even more ground (9.5 furlongs) and loved it. Again she was outbroken, but this time it didn’t matter as Tupungato rolled home 3 in front with an eye-popping 97SP. She’s fast, she doesn’t require the lead, and she clearly likes this distance she gets in this race. I’d like her a whole lot more if this race were 9 or longer, but she’s hard to root against.

The 7-1 entrant, A Case In Point, is entered by goodtimes. She’s a lovely Point Given filly out of the useful turfy hemare Smitten. Case is one of the more experienced 3yos out there with already 15 starts to her credit. She started her career on dirt, but like so many PG offspring found her home on the turf. She’s never finished worse than fourth on the green stuff, and earned a G1 win at this distance as a 2yo. She’s a speedy filly who really likes to be on or near the pace. The trainer has an excellent 16% win rate with a 45% ITM rate. If Case should not win, odds are in her favor for a placing. High SP to date is 91, which she’s hit 3 times including her graded win.

The King’s Hunter is one of three at 8-1 odds. Ticketman0’s Azamour filly just took home the G1 Train Yard Special at 9 furlongs with a 91SP for the half-length win. She’s tried 8.5 twice, settling for sixth and second, but that second saw her post a lifetime high 93 in the G3 Triangular Star. She can close from midpack or stalk as she pleases, and her natural tactical speed can only help young jockey D Phillips get her in the right position for a roll down the stretch. Very nice filly should make some waves as she gets more ground.

Breeders Bowl Juvie Filly Turf and Eclipse winner Urban Quest faltered badly in the G1 Train Yard last time out. The 9f distance surely wasn’t her downfall, as she won a G3 (the Phenom) at that distance three back. Nor can exhaustion be blamed, as she’d had 5 weeks to recover. Presumably she’s back to her winning form here. The Rainbow Quest filly is the second offspring of turf middle distance specialist Noble Princess. Urban Quest comes into this race with a lifetime high SP of 94 (earned in the Phenom) and a big red target on her back as every other filly wants the honor of beating such an accomplished horse. Trainer battlers will be counting on the filly’s mid-close/stalkerish style to get her to the wire in front. You have to respect a filly with these credentials, but her two most recent races (both losses) are somewhat troubling. Her inexperienced jockey won’t be a huge help.

The undefeated Neuschwanstein steps up to play with the big girls as the final 8-1 betting choice. Waremblem8 bred this filly for the naming possibilities (she’s by Castledale out of an In The Wings mare), but she’s turned into a hell of a racehorse. After an easy win in a 5f maiden to start her career, she was moved up to stakes ranks and never looked back. She’s won 6 in a row with excellent closing runs, and has a high SP of 96 going a mile. It’s more than time to test her at the highest ranks, and she looks very competitive here. There’s no question she’s good, but can she handle the best fillies in the sim while stretching out an extra sixteenth? My money says yes.

Galileo’s Dancer, breaking from the rail post, is the first of three at 10-1. Sledge4’s Galileo filly (out of the Langfuhr mare Whisper of Night) has won 5 of 10 starts, including 4 stakes. Her sole graded attempt (in the G3 Broadside) saw her finish a close third, but that race was on such soft ground it’s no wonder she didn’t like it. Last time out she went for a listed stake at 8.5 and wired the field by a length. The impressive part was her speed figure – an astonishing 97, the highest posted of any 3yo filly on the grass at this distance this year. It was 8 points higher than she’d eared previously, which must make one wonder whether she’ll regress off that effort. It wouldn’t be surprising, but I have a feeling that if she does bounce, it’ll be a very minor one that’ll still see Galileo’s Dancer pick up a piece of the purse.

Also at 10-1 is Breeders Bowl runnerup and Eclipse nominee Dahliyev. The striking gray daughter of Cryptoclearance out of El Prado mare Big Stone Lake was undefeated going into the Breeders Bowl, but settled for second on the big day. She came back strongly to win a listed stake at a mile by nearly 4, but in her last race was again second. In that race (the G1 Train Yard) she made a game stretch run to earn a 90SP but couldn’t quite overtake The King’s Hunter. Trainer chelseydek has obtained the services of excellent jockey P Bangs for this ride. Dahliyev has never finished finished worse than second, but she hasn’t yet flashed the speed of some of her competitors in this race. She’s a very classy filly, but will that be enough?

Ausracing enters the other 10-1 horse, Maspero. In five starts she’s got 3 wins and a pair of seconds, plus she just ran a lifetime high 95SP. This Zabeel filly (out of graded winner Danehill Dancer – yes, that’s the mare’s name, and no, her sire is not Danehill Dancer, it’s Danehill) is a midcloser type who’s getting real good at just the right time. This is her first graded attempt, but with three listed tries for one win under her girth, she’s in great shape. It looks to me like she’ll prefer 9 furlongs or more, but if jockey B Philp can get her moving around the far turn in time, he’ll be improving his 20% win rate.

Lenny25 tries to win this race with Desert Alley, a pretty little Green Desert filly. Her mama, Alybroad, is a rather ordinary Broad Brush mare who has produced one other stakes winner. Desert Alley started her career on the main track but couldn’t quite find that elusive win. So off to the grass she went. She ran just third with a speed figure comparable to her dirt runs, but it was a good enough race to merit another turf shot, this time at a mile. And what do you know, it worked, as she earned an easy 3 3/4 length victory for a 79SP. She continued for a two more wins including a listed victory. Last time out Desert Alley went in another listed at 9f. She fell much further back than she ever had before and simply ran out of room in the stretch, posting a lifetime high 89SP in running second by 2. The dropback to 8.5 doesn’t shouldn’t be a problem, although I can’t wait to see what this filly does at the longer distances. What could be a problem is the fact that she’s a good 8 points slower than her peers, and making that graded jump at the same time.

Desert Heights is one of two at 13-1. Stalmanu3’s Galileo filly (out of a Desert King hemare) has earned just 3 wins from 11 starts, but don’t let that fool you – she’s run top 3 in 7 of 11. She does have a better win record sprinting (2 of 5) than routing (1 of 6) but at the graded level her lone second came at 8.5 furlongs (in the G1 Techranger’s Graduation). heights tends to come up short as she closes in the stretch, suggesting she’ll fare much better at 10-12 than the middle distance range. Exhibit A is her last start, a listed stake at 9.5 furlongs. She dropped waaaayyyy back and when asked flew down the stretch, but came up 4 short at the wire. She’ll probably do the same here, unfortunately.

The second 13-1 entry is buzz’s Culinary Cutie. The El Prado filly (out of graded winning hemare West of Slew) has blossomed since getting a route on the grass; indeed, she’s undefeated in 3 two-turn turf tries. She’s a fast filly who likes to be on or near the lead. The Cute One has tried the graded ranks just once where she ran sixth by nearly 10, but that was in the G3 Reflection Futurity on the dirt. That race can be tossed. Consider instead her pair of wins at 8 and 8.5, with SPs of 90 and 91 respectively. She’s a touch slower than some of her better peers, but certainly well within range here. If you’re looking for a longshot, this filly would be a reasonable bet.

Broohar enters A P In The Well as the 14-1 horse. The AP Indy filly is out G2-winner The Well Runs Deep, a two-turn dirt specialist. In The Well has an excellent 9:3-1-4 record, finishing out of the money in the clearly too short G3 Booker T Handicap by about 3 lengths. She’s generally a deep closer but has been known to run much closer to the pace when necessary. She’s been crying out for more ground, and probably won’t be hitting her best SPs until she gets it. At this point, her best SP of 86 (earned two back when she ran third by a quarter-length at 8.5 in a listed stake) isn’t nearly good enough to win this race.

The entry of 20-1 longshot Into The West is a bit of a puzzler. She’s by Kitten’s Joy out of a Fusaichi Pegasus hemare. Dragon576’s gray filly has one just one race, a 6f maiden. She is twice stakes placed, including a second in the G3 Apparently Juvenile against the boys. Last time out she ran a dismal last place to lose by 10 in the G1 Train Yard. Her best SP, 86, was earned in a second place in a listed stake at 7. She’s far slower than the rest of the field, but has a way of making things happen when least expected. Could manage a piece of the pie if the stars align, but unlikely to run top 3.

I like the undefeated Neuschwanstein to make it seven in a row, but can’t count out the awesome filly Urban Quest or the super-fast Galileo’s Dancer. Dahliyev could get revenge by edging out Urban Quest, or up-and-comers Tupungato or The King’s Hunter could close strongly to eke out a win. In other words, half the field is more than capable of taking home the How Are You Gentlemen Cup.

Breeders Bowl champ Urban Quest attempts to break the $1 million barrier but must first hold off BB runnerup Dahliyev and undefeated Neuschwanstein

[2

post-3849","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
