The 12th race should be a cracker with top ranked dirt sprinting older males Polish Reality (2), Casterly Rock (4), Crypto Flow (5), Wonderboy DJ (7), Deligence (11), Samoth (13), Wonderboy Eamon (15) and 9th ranked older dirt sprinting mare Otto History all gearing up for this the eighth running of the $1,000,000 G1 Sand Castle Golden Sprint on a fast dirt track going 6f. Race record is shared three ways at 1:083/5 with Spirit Of Texas in 2004, Ninety North in 2002 and 2000 Champion Sprinter Blue Ant in 2001.

Here is how the fourteen chargers will greet the judge;

PP #1 – SAMOTH – STORM CAT x SILVER CHARM x CURE THE BLUES (jtlincoln) 10/1
4yo colt that has one run this year when 4th in listed stakes. Two time listed winner and two time graded winner including G2 Bluegrass Cup Sprint in 2986 and G3 Bluegrass Darby Trial in 2839. Consistently running 100 + SP’s and has hit the board nine of his last twelve starts, he looks good value at 10/1. Will be better for the previous run and has G Harmon aboard who has eight wins at 8.5% this year.

PP #2 – CARNIVAL OF SOULS – CAPE TOWN x DEVIL HIS DUE x VICE REGENT (super3) 17/1
Although quite inconsistent end of last year, had decent lead up run in 3147 when 5th in G3 Toboggan Handicap at 7f. V Carpenter aboard has three wins at 10.7% this year and will partner this 5yo horse as he looks to increase his career earnings by 300%. Best run was in 3000 in the G1 Count Fleet when 2nd to Polish Reality by one and a half lengths and will only run in the money if he can reproduce such a performance.

PP #3 – BARB’S DUBAI – ESSENCE OF DUBAI x GULCH x VICE REGENT (wolverine) 19/1
This 4yo colt is a seven time listed stakes winner but has been by far outclassed at graded level to date. Can run modest SP’s however he appears to appreciate more ground than just 6f. Tends to run from mid-field and will be partnered by F McNabb who has one win from thirteen rides to date this year. Up against it and would prefer to see him at 8f +. Prefer others.

PP #4 – POLISH REALITY – POLISH NAVY x GULCH x KNOWN FACT (champions4) 6/1
This 5yo horse has very solid form coming into this and I believe he is a great shot at 6/1 this week. A five time listed and two time graded winner including the G1 Count Fleet and G2 Dr. Patches Handicap he is also twice G2 placed including his first of two runs this year when 2nd in the G2 Wicker Sofa Stakes beaten a quarter length by Deligence. Massive positive is H Harzheim in the saddle with forty-three wins at 22.3% this year. Great form, over a million dollars career earnings and ranked 2nd in dirt sprints. Will go very close.

PP #5 – DELIGENCE – POSSE x A.P. INDY x FORTY NINER (julie) 6/1
This 4yo colt is on fire this year in his first three runs. Won G2 Wicker Sofa first up, and has gone on to place 3rd to Casterly Rock in the G3 Pablo Verces Handicap and 2nd last time out in the G3 Toboggan Handicap only beaten a quarter length. Partnered by Z Edwards who is at three wins from forty-seven rides and may be a negative factor in the stretch as others have far superior talent aboard. Three time listed winner and twice placed and two time graded winner and three time graded placed is a huge achievement for any horse and should go very close this week.

PP #6 – CASTERLY ROCK(IRE) – GIANT’S CAUSEWAY (IRE) x GONE WEST x SADLER’S WELLS (grrm) 9/2
This 5yo horse was 2nd in this race last year and has gone on to win the G1 Breeders Bowl Sprint, G3 Middle Of Nowhere Sprint and last time out won the G3 Pablo Verces Handicap. He is obviously the horse to beat and will be looking to improve his 4th ranking in dirt sprint and add to his 3.3 million bank balance. Has champion S Ledwith aboard who won in this race in 2005 and the pair look to be a lethal combination. 2006 Eclipse Champion Dirt Sprinter trained by the great Given looks as if he will either place easily or just tear the field to shreds.

PP #7 – LOOKING FOR MORE – BRAHMS x PENTELICUS x DISTANT VIEW (gene) 10/1
The winner of this great race last year is this 5yo horse who is looking to blast past the 2 million mark after a less than impressive G1 lead up. Smashed in allowance first up for the year before placing 2nd in listed company last time out. A four time graded winner including the G1 KyHorseman Elixir Sprint and the G2 FANG Attack Stakes. T Tippett has only two wins this year at less than 5% and will not help Looking For More this week. 10/1 is not great value considering the class of his lead up and I prefer others.

PP #8 – HARD TO HANDLE – MISWAKI x GREEN DESERT x RIVERMAN (zwylde) 14/1
After a great run in the G1 Breeders Bowl when only a length and a quarter 3rd, Hard To Handle has been in a significant form slump and will need to drastically improve in order to push these great horses. Three time graded winner who is now 5yo and is possibly showing signs that his thirty-four starts are affecting him. Partnered by D Lakencher who has eight wins at 15.4%, they can really give this a good shake if Hard To Handle can reignite.

PP #9 – A. P. RADAR – A.P. INDY x DANZIG x MISWAKI (russ) 17/1
4yo colt who I do not believe is a 17/1 shot. Has had a flying start to this year with three 3rd placings in listed stakes and looks as if he has hit career best form. Do not be shocked to see him running well this week as he has shown good improvent this year and could continue with a graded placing this week in his second graded race. N Huhn will ride him and look for his forth win from thirty-one starts and they are an outside chance to place.

PP #10 – OTTO HISTORY – DEPUTY MINISTER x FAPPIANO x BUCKPASSER (capsized) 12/1
Partnered by T Miller who has one win from twenty-five ride this year is the only female in the race. This 5yo mare is about three times more than what she should be on morning line odds. Crucified for her last run in which she didn’t handle the turf but still managed to beat three donkeys, She is a six time graded winner, has over 3 million banked and is the top ranked dirt classic older mare whilst being ranked ninth in the sprint division. As her breeding suggests, she does look to want more than 6f and I am tipping that trainer capsized will instruct T Miller to lead and go flat out. Will defiantly be in the finish. Place beat here for sure!

PP #11 – SMOULDERING STREET – FOOL’S PLEASURE x GRAUSTARK x NEARCTIC (magoo2912) 16/1
An old war horse at 7yo and trained by a great Aussie and Victorian at that, Smouldering Street will be ridden by V Byrd who is two from seventeen this year. Mags will be disappointed with the pairing and at 16/1, he is a definite outsider. He has won seven races in the last twelve months including two listed stakes wins and two placings. Smouldering Street can run well here this week if he is able to recapture his 100 + SP form that has seen him gain these listed results. I will not have my money here but is a chance if he returns back to form.

PP #12 – WONDERBOY EAMON(IRE) – DESERT KING (IRE) x PENTELICUS x PINE BLUFF (stalfrank) 14/1
H Cain will partner this 4yo colt and look for his fifith win from thirty-three races. He has amassed over 1.6 million dollars and four time graded winner including three G1’s and probably deserves a little more respect than 14/1. Put him in your box trifecta as although he has not won in eight months, he may still put in a solid performance given his 100 + SP runs and his dirt sprint rank of 15. May well place in this.

PP #13 – WONDERBOY DJ – CARSON CITY x SEATTLE SLEW x MR. PROSPECTOR (wonder2) 19/1
Jockey G Ayso won this race last year and was 2nd in 2005 and also won it in 2004. He is therefore obviously a huge positive for a 5yo horse that is posted at 19/1 however a great jockey doesn’t always help as Wonderboy DJ placed 8th in this race last year with champion S Ledwith aboard. First up G3 Backseat Driver winner this year and went on to place 3rd last time out in G3 Arizona Silver Spoon beaten only just over a length. Good form coming into this, winning jockey and ranked seventh in dirt sprint, he looks as if he is a great chance amongst many this week.

PP #14 – CRYPTO FLOW – CRYPTOCLEARANCE x CARSON CITY x SUNDAY SILENCE (kyclocker) 9/1
Q Cassell who won this race in 2003 will partner this 4yo colt whilst looking for his twenty-forth win at 14.4% this year. Another great horse in the kyclocker empire, Crypto Flow started the year well with a good listed win but failed to fire a shot last time out in the G3 Toboggan beaten six lengths by the second placed Deligence. I am a little scared off by his last run, however forgetting that run, he has been posting very solid 100 + SP’s and would possibly be a lot shorter given his dirt sprint rank of 5. Will run top five for sure and is a great chance to place.

There we have it. This will be my first review in which I do not outline my bets or suggested finishing order as I see it as too close to call with many equal chances.

I do however like Casterly Rock and believe that he may just win it.

May your noble steed be swift.

[2

post-3836","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
