Invierno<\/b> got a perfect setup and stormed home to win this week\u2019s Roan Around Savage stakes. This was his second career stakes victory and he posted a 95 speed, a new best for this stakes. The win was the sixth overall of his career in his twenty seven starts, and boosted his career earnings to the $225080 mark. Those valuable stakes points also moved him up to a rank of 56 in the Long Turf Division among older horses. With the low odds in this race, payouts at the betting window weren\u2019t spectacular, with the winner paying $6.10 $3.10 $2.10 across the board. Exotic payouts were on the short side, as well, paying $18.80 in the exacta and $24.60 in the trifecta.<\/p>\n
Pretty much as advertised, F S Who<\/b> provided the early speed here. He got a good break from the gate and managed to open up a fairly nice cushion on the field. By the half he had opened up four lengths, and looked to be fairly well in control. As they crossed the half way post, though, the complexion of the race changed, as the closer took things over. Silver Springs<\/b>, who was the closest, slid past the flagging leader just past the half and held on to the lead with a lot of fight until just past the eleven furlong mark. He couldn\u2019t hold off Invierno, though, a deep closer who found himself only six lengths out at the half. He passed at just past eleven and led the field home, crossing the wire nearly three lengths ahead of Silver Springs. Race favorite Mockingbird<\/b> appeared to stumble coming out of the gate, and never really mounted her powerful close. She took third, out a long thirteen and three quarters. There has been no word from her trainer on her condition.<\/p>\n
