If you have not noticed this group of four year olds looks pretty awesome all around. Up and comers Otto Causes (IRE) and Kool Thing (IRE) took down some tough veterans. Look out for those three year old fillies, Spooky Wildcat and You’re a Towel they look like the real deal and watch the runners ups as well because they looked great. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Race: 3126.0213 Glenn Handicap – Grade I – $500,000
Track: <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Florida
Restrictions: All horses, 4 years old and up
Distance: A mile and one eighth on the Dirt

An up and coming four year old out lasted an older rival in a very close finish. Otto Causes (IRE) had been a bit inconsistent speed figure wise thus far in his career but we know he is capable of the big speed figure. Today this speedster found himself pressing the early pace from the inside post position from third. That inside position may have been the key to his narrow win. At the halfway point and around the turn for home Otto Causes (IRE) stuck his head in front and assumed the lead entering the stretch with a one length lead.

Fly For Buda is experiencing a revival of sorts, and while he likes to run on the lead today he settled in fifth just three lengths behind the contested pace. He was in excellent striking position and took up the chase around the turn for home. Meanwhile lollygagging at the back of the pack was Buddha’s Undies. He was nearly thirteen lengths off the early pace before he got interested racing.

Entering the stretch Otto Causes (IRE) had the lead and looked solid but Fly for Buda was right there a length back and closing. After Buddha’s Undies realized there was a race going on he grew wings closing with unbelievable speed. As the wire neared Fly for Buda looked like he would pass Otto Causes (IRE) but Otto Causes (IRE) had just enough to hold on by a nose to Fly for Buda. Buddha’s Undies went from nine lengths back in ninth at the top of the stretch to third just three quarters of a length behind the winner. What a great way to kick off the battle for dirt route supremacy.

Race: 3126.0314 The Aslan Memorial Turf Classic – Grade I – $500,000
Track: Kentucky
Restrictions: All horses, 4 years old and up
Distance: A mile and one half on the Turf

Kool Thing (IRE) had some questions coming into this race but those questions will be asked no more. He has now run his win streak to five in a row. This win makes back to back G1 races for him now. A bit of an aside here but this set of four year old long distance turf runners look very impressive and capable of picking up where the older turf stars have left off.

Kool Thing (IRE) found himself in a stalking position about a length off the pace set by Tenpin Gold and just off of Confederacy (IRE) stalking in second. The front running trio were nine lengths clear of the next set of runners through the early stages of the race. Sitting in fifth was Sunnybank Memorial. At the halfway point Kool Thing (IRE) eased past the pace setter and Confederacy (IRE) taking the lead into the stretch. Confederacy (IRE) was not giving up but no matter how hard he tried he could not get past Kool Thing (IRE) the entire length of the stretch. Kool Thing (IRE) won by three quarters of a length over Confederacy (IRE), Sunnybank Memorial was closing ground in the stretch but came up short finishing third three lengths behind the winner.

Race: 3126.0115 Los Vinegrette Stakes – Grade II – $200,000
Track: California
Restrictions: Fillies and mares, 3 years old
Distance: One mile on the Dirt

You’re a Towel lived up to her number two ranking scoring a very nice win over the favored All the Riches. All the Riches fell further behind the pace than she had been doing as a two year old and although she ran pretty well that cost her against You’re a Towel. You’re a Towel was mid pack in the early stages of this race only six lengths back. She closed the gap quickly only trailing by a length entering the stretch and from there she powered home to a length and a half win over Star of the North.

Star of the North sat near the back of the pack early tenth about eight and a half lengths off the early pace. There may not be a more impressive filly on the Oaks trail right now than Spooky Wildcat. She has now run her record to four wins in five starts after posting an impressive 100-speed figure. Spooky stalked the early pace in sixth position only three and a half lengths off the leaders.
