There are a handful of longer routing opportunities the first weekend of the year, and the Headache Machine Turf Filly Route is one of them. It was a short field, but the futurefarm homebred absolutely cantered home with the greatest of ease. A month later, she would test the graded waters in the Tristan Fillies-G3. In that race, Timee got loose on an uncontested lead, and while the spirited bay made a good closing effort, it was not quite enough, and she had to settle for third. In that race, the filly gave every indication that 1 1/2 miles or more was right up her alley.

The daughter of Derby hero Camelot would be given a chance to show how well suited she was suited for the distance in the 12 furlong New Zealand Oaks-G2. In that race, Cambow rated midpack, as once again Timee would zip to an early, uncontested lead. This time, however, the extra 1/4 mile made all the difference. Exbourne’s Cambow was able to pass that rival and pull away from the rest of the field, winning by 3 3/4 lengths and posting a career best 104 SF.

From there, it was on to Victoria and the Sydney Oaks-G1. Sent off the second choice, Exbourne’s Cambow once again coasted home in front, this time by 1 1/4 lengths over Dazzled By Stars. It did not take long to add a second Grade 1 win to Cambow’s resume, as she captured the rich Japanese Oaks-G1 by 2 1/2 lengths, this time with a 105 SF.

The Oaks de English-G1 is a goal for many a trainer, and Exbourne’s Cambow entered the race the 9/2 favorite. She did not disappoint, sitting just off the early lead before powering home to a 4 1/4 length score over Dazzled By Stars. At this point, unbeaten in four starts over the 12 furlong distance, Cambow was the undeniable leader of the division.

The rest of the season did not go quite as smoothly. Her early season exploits begant o catch up with her, and she bounced in the Irish Oaks-G1, finishing seventh. Still, she earned a 105 SF in the process, and the winner, The Biggest Impact, an eye-popping 110 SF, so she was hardly disgraced by that effort. Next came a tenacious effort in the Minerve-G3. In that race, Exbourne’s Cambow stalked the early pace and took the lead at the head of the stretch, but was unable to withstand the late kick of Wootalyzer. She settled for second, this time with a 107 SF. After an easy allowance score, the bay was entered in the Vicky Oaks-G1. Inexplicably, she broke poorly and never really entered the fray, finishing eleventh. She was also dull in her final start of the year, finishing sixth in a listed stakes.

While the year may not have ended as well as it started, when she was on her game, Exbourne’s Cambow completely dominated her division, winning several of the division’s most prestigious races. No other filly in her division won more than a single grade 1 event, while she won three. Congratulations to Exbourne’s Cambow and her connections!

Exbourne’s Cambow put the turf marathon division on notice that she would be a force to be reckoned with in

[4
174
post-34528","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-general","tag-2015-eclipse
["GET
