The Bargain Bowl November 28, 2015 features 15 stakes races and a couple allowance races. The series started in 2005 with only a few races but over the years has really grown. This will be the 11th Bargain Bowl and each one is just as exciting as the next.

These races are restricted to scratch bred runners that basically cost less than 100 points to breed. Our stakes schedule runs from March thru November. This year we offered 68 stakes races plus another 20 or more allowances and probably 50 plus maiden races restricted to Bargain Bred runners. If you are interested in learning more about the series and possibly participating I will have a link to our website at the end of the article.

For many of the long time bargain trainers the anticipation of the Bargain Bowl is as exciting as the Breeders Bowl. Two year olds are starting to show us they have a little something, three year olds are blossoming into divisional leaders and the older horses are as salty as ever. Let’s preview the races so you can get familiar with the races and the players.

Misallocation – Two year old fillies 8f on the turf

The two year old Turf Filly division culminates in the Misallocation. This will be the third running of the Misallocation. From 2005 to 2012 there were not separate filly juvenile races. In those years fillies pretty much kicked the colts around so we had to give them separate races.

The race is named for a bargain bred. Misallocation swept the two year turf stakes in 2010 destroying all her competition male or female. As a three year old she beat the boys in the 100 Guineas and beat older rivals in the Bargain Princess. As a four year old she beat the boys again in the Silenus Mile and in that year’s Bargain Bowl switched to the dirt and took the Cemetary Winter Distaff (equivalent of the Filly Mare Distaff). She was a top notch runner so it was easy to name this race in her honor.

The first race on the stakes schedule for two year old fillies on the turf is the Starinsky. The Starinsky is run in September at a distance of 6 furlongs. It was a small field this year but Nova Gold found her way to the winner’s circle. The second race in this division is the Vandergriff Park in October at a mile. None of the top runners from the Starinsky made any impact as Multirich made her presence known. This daughter of Multidimensional earned her first stakes win taking the Vandergriff Park by a length and a half over deep closer Dead O’ Alive. Third was another closer by Fort Wood in Fortaldor.

The top three from the Vandergriff Park and new comer Spark of Love are set to meet in the Misallocation. Spark of Love will be trying the turf for the first time and her pedigree indicates she might do well on the turf. In the past two years the favorite has not won the race but long shots have not really hit the board.

Meadow Star – Two year old fillies 8f on the dirt

The two year old Filly Dirt Division will settle its champion in the Meadow Star. As with the Misallocation this race will run for just the third time. The race is named for a real life runner Meadow Star. She was not really a bargain bred type but was sired by Meadowlake with an In Realty mare so her bloodlines were a bit obscure. Obscure is what bargain breeding is about in many cases. Meadow Star was a monster juvenile taking the G1 Breeders Cup Filly Juvy, the G1 Frizette, the G1 Spinaway, the G1 Matron, a G3 and a G2. So we honor her name with a race in the Bargain Bowl.

The Della Street kicks off the two year old filly dirt division in September at 6f. Lykens Flash showed a good late kick to run down lose on the lead Miss Kipp to win by half a length. The second race in this division is the one mile Fizzy Miss. Lykens Flash ran down another lose on the lead runner in Erase My Mind but this time won by a length and a half. Lykens Flash will be the favorite after taking the first two races in this division. Miss Kipp and Erase My Mind will take another shot at the favorite along with stablemate Bathilda. Bathilda won her debut on the front end so the pace could be contentious. That might be good for Swiss Cardenas making her stakes debut.

Last year Sweetsmartsaint won the race at odds of 8-1 and the year before Victoria’s Secrets won at odds of 6-1. The favorites in the first two races were better suited to sprints and did not fare well as their competition got better with age. Lykens Flash looks to break through where previous favorites have not.

Class Ack Juvenile – Two year olds 8f on the turf

The two year old Colt Turf division will be decided in the 11th running of the Class Ack Juvenile. In the first eight editions of the race fillies won four times. Stratopist is the stakes record holder as he earned a 95 speed figure winning last year as the Dragnil barn took the top three placings.

This race is named after Class Ack a bargain bred sim runner. Grass Wonder X Rockamundo X Truce Maker. Class Ack raced before there was a Bargain Bred Racing Series. He was a solid juvenile in 2001 but broke through in the 2002 Equinics winning the G1 Unbridled Turf Mile. He would get a second G1 race in his next start. Two G1 wins from bargain breeding made him an easy choice to honor with a race in his name.

The first race in this division is the Sandford Park at 6 furlongs in September. Multiright became the second juvenile stakes winner for Multidimensional in the Bargain Series. He broke well set the pace and never looked back going gate to wire winning by a length and a half. He opted for an allowance in his next start and won that by two lengths. The second race in this division is the one mile Winchester. Gotmorejunk jumped on his competition and won by more than two lengths. It was just his second try on turf. Idealorio ran a steady second and Scipio Africanus set the pace and held third.

Going into the Bargain Bowl we have an interesting meeting of the stalking speed of Multiright and the closing speed of Gotmorejunk. As always though interesting new comers spice up the action. Both Two Natures and Show as Petty Cash come off nice maiden wins. Slide By ran solid setting the pace in a turf allowance last time out and the rest of the runners Idealorio, Brazen Raisen, Citrouille, Foggy Hill, and Tears You’ll Cry all have competitive speed figures with every reason to improve. This looks like a great race and a possible budding rivalry between our two stakes winners.

Favorites tend to do well in this race. Outside of Raise the Beacon in 2009 at odds of 17-1, Slinging Tradition in 2011 at 9-1 and Monarch’s Sunshine in 2008 at odds of 8-1 there have not been a lot of surprises. The last two year’s winners have been less than 3-1.

Charlies Tiger Juvenile – Two year olds 8f on the dirt

The last of the juvenile stakes races settles the two year old Dirt Colt division. The winner is destined to be the Bargain Derby favorite. Fillies won this race 7 times in the first 8 races. The colts are very happy they have their own race now. Eagle View was the only colt to break through the filly dominance and he had to set the stakes record to do it and is still the record holder of this race with a 93.67 speed figure.

Charlie’s Tiger was a sim bargain bred filly. She was a graded placed two year old running second in a G2 and third in a G3. She made her name as a three year old in the 2002 Equinics. It was here this cheaply bred daughter of Lord Tiger lead gate to wire winning the G1 Winning Colors. We honor her by naming the race after her.

Funny Execution has won the first two races in this division. The first race in this division is the Amity run in September at 6f. Using a stalking running style Funny Execution sat just off the pace setter and closed well to beat Bottom End by a length and three quarters. In October the one mile Ginger Ale saw these same top two finishers run one two. This time though Funny Execution just nailed Bottom End by a head on the wire with Loud Colors third.

These first two races may make it seem as though Funny Execution and Bottom End are in a class of their own but Loud Colors third place run was sneaky good. He is lightly raced and has every right to improve. Fourth place finisher Atmospheric Entry has been solid and could take that next step in this race. Newcomers are not that far off the top two. Real North has been cutting his teeth in allowance competition and could be a factor. Dancer Approved tried the dirt for the first time last out running well and should enjoy the extra distance. Junkynfunky and the Little Giant are lightly raced and ran solid in allowance company.

Favorites in this race have hit the board consistently but not won many races. The race seems to always be pretty competitive with six races being decided by a half length or less. This race also seems to produce really nice runners in the series. Winners always win more stakes races in the series.

Bargain Distance Challenge – Three year olds and up 12f on the dirt

This race was first run in 2010 and decides the Dirt Distance division. Mares have won three of the five Distance Challenge races. Bad Line is the only repeat winner taking the 2012 and 2013 editions of the race. Hzaf Lies set the stakes record for the race last year with a 98 speed figure.

This division’s first race is The Stayer in May run at a distance of a mile and a half. Storming Jet got the jump on Knightly Magic and beat him to the wire to win by a length and a quarter. Cutitup was third with four year old filly Roan Sparkles fourth.

The long distance runners next met in September in the Hinterland run over a mile and three quarters. Knightly Magic would not be denied this time closing and catching the filly Roan Sparkles to win by three commanding lengths. Roan Sparkles was a clear second with Hall Pass II third and Storming Jet fourth.

The third race in the division is the mile and three eighth Ko Ko Shan. Some familiar names hit the board with Knightly Magic once again running down pesky Roan Sparkles to win by just three quarters of a length. Stormin Jet finished third just three lengths back.

One of the neat and attractive things to the series are the rivalries that get built up and this division showed that this year. Bronx winner Stormin Jet took the first race, Knightly Magic took the next two and Roan Sparkles ran fourth then second twice. These rivals will have to also worry about new comers to the division like Majesty’s Allure who has been solid at long distances and steps into stakes company for the first time. Three year old Clock to Stop comes off a Copper Cup win last out and seems to be getting better with age and distance. Kabuki Wild ran fourth to the top three last time out in his first dirt start in a while and turf running Stormclass is in good form and the distance is no object.

Chance for Delta – Fillies and mares three years old and up 6f on the dirt

Filly and Mare dirt sprint champion often come down to the Chance For Delta. This division has produced some great rivalries such as Enthusiasm Spreads and Back Road or Gypsy’s Warning and Wariuz Corp.

The race was originally named the Delta Tiger Sprint but was changed to honor her runner, 3 time Bargain Bowl winner Chance for Delta. Chance for Delta won two listed stakes and 5 Bargain Bred stakes including the first Bargain Oaks, and this race three straight years. While her speed figures were not super impressive she beat 3 other Bargain Bowl winners in her wins and she ran huge on Bargain Bowl day every time.

This division gets started in March with the 5.5 furlong Death Valley Starlet. Traditional Code had spent her three year old season mostly running in routes and as a four year old this year found her home sprinting. She went gate to wire earned a 99 speed figure winning by a length. Digital Play closed to finish second. Six year old Glorious Detail hung around to finish third.

The next race in this division is the Sugar and Spice in July at 6 furlongs. Once again Traditional Code was on her game going gate to wire to win by two lengths while earning a 102 speed figure. Turtle Snip, last year’s Chance For Delta winner, closed well to get second while Way Hot T.V. Racer pressed the pace and hung around for the show.

The third race in this division is the Paint Brush run in October and 6.5 furlongs. Traditional Code skipped the race and the three year olds took advantage taking the first four places. Light in the Flesh won the Ozark Diamond and finished third in the Bargain Oaks. She was soundly beaten in the Sugar and Spice but turned it around in the Paint Brush. She pressed the pace took over and won by a length and a half over Bargain Oaks winner Her Price is Right. Sweetsmartsaint closed from mid pack to get third.

The largest margin of victory in 10 runnings of the race has been a length and a half. Favorites have traditionally done well but the last two years have seen an 18-1 and 12-1 winners. Silver Steps earned a 105 speed figure in 2012 setting the race record.

We will have a clash between Traditional Code and Light in the Flesh as they meet for the first time. Looking to break into the party will be Oaks winner Her Price is Right as well as defending champ Turtle Snip.

Silent Witness – Three year olds and up 5.5f on the turf

Turf sprinters will settle their division in the Silent Witness. Mares have won this race four times over the years. Every year a long shot hits the board and sometimes wins. In 2012 30-1 Indian Prime beat 29-1 Nine Degrees.

The race is named for real life runner Silent Witness. He ran in Hong Kong dominating turf sprints winning multiple G1 races while stringing together 17 wins in a row. He would be a bargain bred in sim life out of sire El Moxie from a Bureaucracy mare.

The first race of the year for turf sprinters takes place in March with the 5 furlong Death Valley Oasis. Stratum Kahal started the year where he left off closing strongly to get up by three quarters of a length. Zante Regal set the pace but just could not hold off the winner. Gimmieoptions ran well to be third.

The second race of the season is the seven furlong Everglades run in July. Once again Stratum Kahal closed well dominating the race winning by two lengths. Buckfair also closed but was not threat to the winner while finishing second. Casino Stage was mid pack and made his way to finish third.

In October the third race in this series is the Tokyo Sprint. Three year old Bald Eagle’s Nest tried to take down Stratum Kahal setting a quick pace but he too felt the sting of Stratum Kahal’s closing kick. Stratum Kahal made it 6 divisional races in a row completely dominating this division. Bald Eagle’s Nest was a good second. Ringringgosthebell battled with Rock Turtle to the wire to win a close photo for third.

This division has been dominated by Stratum Kahal since July of 2014. In between Bargain Races he has run second in a G3 race and just missed in another G3 and G1 race this summer. That has not stopped people from taking a shot as the race has drawn 13 competitors. Bald Eagle’s Nest, Zante Regal, and Rock Turtle will try the champion again.

Filly Proba Thief holds the stakes record earning a 100 speed figure. I would say that has an excellent chance of being broken this Saturday.

Sir Bear Mile – Three year olds and up 8f on the dirt

Dirt milers earn some of the fastest speed figures. You get a cross of distance runners and milers that makes for very competitive races. This will be the sixth Sir Bear Mile. Every race has been won with a 101 speed figure or better. In fact the last two years you needed to run a 105 to win. There have been no repeat winners and only two horses, Humility and Back in Bodog, have hit the board in more than one year.

The race is named after real life runner Sir Bear. A bargain bred by Sir Leon, Sir Bear would be competitive at the top level for 5 years. He won stakes races from age 3 to age 9. He took the G1 Cigar Mile, the G1 Metropolitan Mile the G1 Gulfstream Park Handicap to go along with 7 G3 stakes wins. We honor him with a race in his name at a mile on dirt probably his best distance.

The dirt milers meet for the first time in the Big City Mile run in May. Redfinger found his favorite distance and strutted his stuff winning the Big City Mile by two lengths. He is a closer and does so with a rush as he earned a 111 speed figure in this race. Gateway District who was third in the Sir Bear last year earned a 108 speed figure but had to settle for second. A Be B won the Death Valley Classic at a mile and a sixteenth over Redfinger but had to settle for third on this day.

In July the South Beach Mile was the stage for Redfinger. He put his closing style on display beating Gateway District again but this time by three lengths. A Be B ran third as well with this race having the same top three finishers as the Big City Mile.

The third race in this division is the Gumball Mile. Once again Redfinger dominated winning by two and three quarter lengths earning a 107 speed figure. It was filly Lle Creoso who set the pace and held second with A Be B running third again.

Redfinger has dominated this division. Still A Be B, Lle Creoso, and Gateway District will all be back in this race to take another swing. Last year’s winner Another Compliment is entered, 2013 winner Van Heusen is entered as well as a couple of improving three year olds in Falling Pins and Let Me Know Now.

The stakes record is held by 2013 winner Van Heusen. In the last three years favorites have not done well.

Kaif Mile – Three year olds and up 8f on the turf

Turf Milers end their season here in the Kaif Mile. The race is named for a sim player who supported the series in the early years. Fillies have won this race three times over the years. This division took a while to build up. In the beginning it did not take much of a speed figure to be a player but in recent years you better have a runner that can reach a 102 to 105 speed figure to win.

The first turf mile of the year is the Silenus Mile in May. Last year’s best turf miler Roderic’s Pins got the season started on the right foot. He sat just off the pace and took advantage into the stretch to win by almost two lengths at the wire. Rory’s Choisir closed from well back to finish second with Newbar Lonhro finishing third.

The second leg of this division is the Kamikaze Mile in September. Three year olds took the top two spots. Stratopist nearly swept the two year old stakes last year winning the Winchester and Class Ack Juvenile. As three year old he took the Bourbon Trail and the 100 Guineas. So it was not a huge surprise to see him close from 8 lengths back to win by almost two lengths. Three year old filly Oxand Cart took the Misallocation at the Bargain Bowl last year. She took a while to get on track as a three year old but she set the pace here and held for a good second. Casino Stage closed well from mid pack to finish third.

The third race in this division is the Lantau Mile in October. The top two were once again three year old Stratopit and Oxand Cart. The same scenario played out with Oxand Cart setting the pace and Stratopist closing to win by a length earning a 106 speed figure. Another three year old Boisranger came from just off the pace to get a good third.

Stratopist has looked strong late in the year but four year old and defending champ Roderic’s Pins should not be discounted. Three year old filly Oxand Cart and three year old Boisranger will be in this field as well. There are a host of good runners older and younger ready for the race. Princess Arena has never been off the board but she has made her way through claimers and gets a class check here.

Nzed Thrill owns the stakes record earning a 105 speed figure in the 2011 edition of the Kaif Mile.

Tale of Two Places – Three year olds and up 6f on the dirt

The dirt sprint division is settled in the Tale of Two Places. One filly has won this race. The race has not had a repeat winner although Roaring Hawkz won in 2009 and was second in 2010 and 2011.

The race takes its name from sim runner Tale of Two Places. Tale of Two Places was a G2 winning millionaire by Dixieland Heat. He was a good miler to a mile and an eighth runner. He earned a 122 and a 120 speed figure in his career. He also competed in the Middle Jewel, and Breeder’s Bowl Sprint but was uncessful. He was good over a period of time and coming from humble breeding we have honered him by naming this race after him.

The dirt sprint division gets started in May with the 6.5 furlong Broadway Sprint. Last year’s Tale of Two Places second place finisher Got the Touch started the year off with a bang. He stalked and pounced on pace setter Traditional Code to edge away to a half length win. Traditional Code is a good filly sprinter who did well against the boys here holding second. Gateway District, who is a factor in the dirt mile, closed well to get third.

The second race in this division is the Bargain Dash in July. Once again it was Got the Touch winning. This time he did it on the front end and was all out in the end to hold off Same Old Drama by a head on the wire. Same Old Drama closed from well off the pace strongly just missing. Truant Officer stalked the early pace and lasted for third.

The third race in this division is the 7 furlong Tombstone run in October. Got the Touch jumped away to a big lead but it would not hold up this time. Four year old filly Meteor Sparky closed from fourth to beat the boys by almost two lengths. Gateway District closed from way back to get second with Got the Touch finishing third. Three year old Eyeing the Brew was fourth coming off his Royal Pawn win.

Got the Touch is the divisional leader and maybe his last race was not at his best distance. He will face Meteor Sparky again and Eyeing the Brew is entered as well. Lightly raced Gimmethebird could be a factor on the front end. Old timer Ciullo has been honing his form in region restricted races and seems in good form. He could be dangerous as he did win this race in 2013 and won the Bargain Dash in 2014.

The stakes record holder is Ballista from the 2007 Bargain Bowl where he earned a 109 speed figure. Outside the first two Tale of Two Places long shots have thrived. No one under 5-1 has won since 2006 and 5 of those winners have been 10-1 or greater.

Vimes Turf Distaff – Fillies and Mares three years old and up 9.5f on the turf

This race is named for a sim player who supported the residency in its infancy. Over Highland won the first two runnings of this race including a win over G3 winner Not a Moo Cow. The last two runnings have been won by Hyrrokkin.

The filly and mare turf division kicks things off in April with mile and a sixteenth Blue Bonnet. Coco’s Esteem closed from way down town to win by almost two lengths. She out kicked Time to Turn who closed from mid pack and had to settle for second. Hyrrokkin pressed a very fast pace and held on for third.

The second race for this division is the mile and an eighth Bargain Princess. Power Walzer found her way to the Bargain Series for the first time and made it count. Once again Hyrrokkin was in with a quick pace which set up the closing kick of Power Walzer who won by almost 3 lengths. BB Silver Tycoon ran a big one closing to finish second. Time to Turn ran on to finish third with Coco’s Esteem finishing fourth.

The third leg of this division is the mile and a quarter Over Highland. 16-1 Fifteen Non Sky closed from way back to score the upset. She was able to out kick Power Walzer who was a little closer to the pace this time to win by half a length. Hyrrokkin was pressing the pace and held third.

Hyrrokkin will attempt to win her third Vimes Turf Distaff in a row. She seems a tad bit off her form from last year but if she gets a lone lead look out. Power Walzer, Coco’s Esteem and Fifteen Non Sky will all be here to compete for division honors. Time to Turn ran second and third in divisional races and is in with a shot.

This seems to be a race where favorites get beat. There have been a couple of years where the favorite has won the race but for the most part we see upsets. Hyrrokkin holds the stakes record for this race which she set last year with a 102 speed figure. She also won by the largest margin in 2013 when she won by three and a half lengths.

John’s Call – Three year olds and up 12f on the turf

The long distance turf division has only been around since 2012. Filly Lot at Steak won the first John’s Call. The last two years were won by Basilisk Isles. The race is named after real life runner John’s Call. John’s Call was a modestly bred runner who really did not come to prominence until he was 9 years old. That year he won the G1 Turf Invitational, the G1 Sword Dancer and would on to finish 3rd in the Breeder’s Cup Turf at 9 years old.

This division gets started in June with the Kings Thirteen at a mile and five eighths. The near perfect 4 year old filly Sea Levels High got the year started with a dominating four length win at odds of 12-1. Hzaf Lies looked prominent at the top of the stretch but could not stay with the winner in the stretch. Storming Jet came along to pick up third.

The next race in this series is the mile and a half Arc de Maleleve. Three year old colt World of Drownings handed Sea Levels High her only career defeat out kicking his rival in the stretch to win by three and a quarter lengths. Sea Levels High just could not keep pace with the young colt but she was four lengths clear of third place Midnight Bells.

The third race is the two mile Wombat Cup. Sea Levels High regained her composure and made short work of her rivals. Xarro was the only runner to keep up with her but could not make up ground in the stretch. Sea Levels High won by two lengths with Xarro finishing second 23 lengths ahead of third place Palline Blu.

Sea Levels High looks like a stand out as World of Drownings is opting for the Cougar Bite Classic. Xarro will be here to compete as will two time John’s Call winner Basilisk Isles. Three year old Midnight Bells is also entered.

So far favorites have dominated this long distance race. Lot at Steak is the stake record holder earning a 104 speed figure in 2012.

Cemetary Winter Distaff – Fillies and Mares three years old and up 9f on the dirt

The filly mare dirt route division crowns its champion here in the Cemetary Winter Distaff. Slave to Tradition is the only back to back winner and she ran second in her attempt at three in a row. Big Time mares win this race and it really started with the legendary Slave to Tradition and she was followed by Sullivans Rainbow, Misallocation, Tomato Gravy and Libri Prohibiti.

This race was named by sim player winterhart a big supporter of the series. Cemetary Winter was one of her favorite runners.

This division starts off in March with the Death Valley Distaff run at the distance of one mile. Know Why came out of her winter break on fire. She closed strongly to catch pace setter Way Hot T.V. Racer and stalker Lle Creoso to win by almost two lengths. She earned a 104 speed figure for her effort. Lle Creoso won the photo for second over Way Hot T.V. Racer.

The second race in this division is the Bargain Summer Distaff at a mile and sixteenth in August. Fort War finished second in the 2014 Cemetary Winter Distaff and threw down the pace in this race. Six furlongs in a shade under 1:10 ran most of these off their feet. Libri Prohibiti closed quick but lost by a head on the wire. Lle Creoso hung around and finished third.

The third race is the Slave to Tradition at a mile and an eighth in October. Society’s Kirby was in the turf distaff last year. Over the summer though she hit her stride switching to the dirt and looked great winning this race by a length and a quarter over Libri Prohibiti. She stalked the pace of Fort War and had the jump on the closing Libri Prohibiti. Fort War held third.

So we have a wide open division with new comers Fort War and Society’s Kirby leading the way into the Bargain Bowl. Libri Prohibiti has been there for every dance this year and could be tough. Three year old Nayjavu just won an allowance with a 109 speed figure so she is one to keep an eye on.

The stakes record is held by Slave to Tradition who earned a 102 speed figure in 2009. Long shots tend to hit the board in this race. Last year 120-1 Ba Elbader ran third. Favorites doe fairly well in this race outside of last year.

Cougar Bite Classic – Three year olds and up 10f on the turf

The race of bargain turf legends. This race is now part of the middle turf division. The first winner of this race was Pepe’s Pipes. Pepe’s Pipes would go on to win a G1 race. Ten Lost Pyramids won back to back events in 2007 and 2008 coming up short in his bid for three in a row. Brilliant Notation would win in 2010 and then again in 2012.

This race is named for sim runner Cougar Bite. He was a G1 winning millionaire out of Half Term. As a three year old he won the G3 Panhandle Derby, the G1 Eclipse Stakes, and at 4 he would add the G1 NY Island Handicap to his resume. Maybe the most accomplished bargain bred in sim history.

This division starts competition with the Hunt Turf Cup run over a mile and three sixteenths in May. Last year’s Cougar Bite winner Go For All of It got the 2015 season off to a good start as he sat a few lengths off the pace before closing for an impressive win. He earned a 111 speed figure for this effort winning by three quarters of a length over pace setting Newbar Choux. Newbar Choux set the pace and nearly pulled off the slight upset. Filly Hyrrokkin would finish third.

The second race in the division is the Ten Lost Pyramids run over a mile and a quarter in August. World of Drownings rained on Go For All of It’s parade winning at odds of 30-1. He closed from well back to catch the favorite winning by three lengths. Go For All of It had a nice steady race finishing second three lengths better than third place Late for the Train.

The third leg of this division is the mile and an eighth Pearl Cup run in October. Time to Turn made it three different winners in the division as the four year old filly got a good trip stalking and pulling away to a one length win over Go For All of It. Go For All of It was second early and ran on well for another on the board finish. World of Drownings came back to earth bit closing to finish third.

Go For All of It and World of Drowning will renew their budding rivalry this Saturday. The division is wide open and there are some solid contenders who could surprise. Georgie Porgie and The Real Martyr could vastly improve going into this race.

Favorites dominate this series traditionally. Brilliant Notation holds the stakes record for this race with a 106 speed figure in his 2012 win.

Bargain Classic – Three year olds and up 9.5f on the dirt

Dirt distance runners line up to claim bargain glory in the Bargain Classic. The first two editions were won by Hustlin Hoosier. He was impressive in both wins laying the foundation for how we judge future runners. Spare Key would win back to back Classics in 2008 and 2009. 41-1 long shot Amber Net is the longest shot to win the race. The race has sometimes been anticlimactic with winners winning by three lengths or more.

The first leg of this division is the Death Valley Classic run at a mile and a sixteenth in March. A Be B got a ground saving stalking trip and turned it into a winner. He would pull away to win by more than three lengths over closing One Hitt Wonder. One Hitt Wonder out closed Another Compliment who was along for third.

The second leg of this division is the Summer Classic run at a mile and an eighth in August. Open to Alumni can spring a race on you and he did so in the Summer Classic. He was left alone on the lead and produced a win going gate to wire at odds of 35-1. He did this last year in the Copper Cup when he won at odds if 25-1. Buckfair closed from way off the pace to get second three length behind the winner. Shores Infected also closed from way back to finish third.

The third leg of this division is the ten furlong Copper Cup in October. Three year old Clock to Stop shocked the field at 18-1. He closed from way back to track down Peer of the Realm who pressed the early pace. Clock to Stop won by just three quarters of a length. Peer of the Realm was about two lengths better than late closing Derby winner Shores Infected who won a photo with Open Alumni for the show.

Want to talk about a wide open division here we go. Last year’s winner Slippery Truth has entered despite not doing well this year. He does have the excuse of drawing post 15 in the Death Valley Classic and Summer Classic. The top two Bargain Derby runners, Shores Infected and Second Wine, are ready to take down their older rivals. Open to Alumni will be there with steady improver Buckfair.

Over the years this race has not had much of a pattern. Favorites win, mild long shots win and there has even been a 41-1 shot win this race. Spare Key holds the stakes record for his run in the 2008 Bargain Classic. Should be a great day of racing.

If you can find the time, check out the Bargain Bowl races this Saturday in South Africa.
