We invited all two year old fillies to come to Virginia to run over six furlongs of turf rated as firm for a piece of the $50000 purse. Last year’s edition drew a field of six, and was won in wire to wire fashion by Joe’s Loop in a race where she showed a lot of heart to bring it home after not being able to open up more than a half length on the field throughout the race. This year, we’ve drawn a field of only four intrepid fillies, and they look to be fairly evenly matched. Oddsmakers have chosen a 4/5 favorite, followed by a pair at 5/2 odds, and rounding it out with a 6/1 longshot. They seem fairly confident in their favorite, but 6/1 is not long for a longshot, and this race could turn into another of the thrillers that Virginia race fans have come to know and love.

PP 1) Nathanna Jones(IRE) Sired by Danehill Dancer(IRE), Trained by pelle. Nathanna Jones(IRE) is making her fourth career start here. She’s been tagged as the longshot in this race. This is her second stakes run, and she is still seeking her first win at this level. Her first three starts have gained her a record of 2-0-1-0-0 with a best speed of 70.1 earned in her last start. That run was a seven furlong stakes run in Kansas where she finished a relatively long out third in a short field. All three of her prior starts have been on turf, and she kicks back in distance after running her last two at seven furlongs. She tends to break at a deep closers pace, and she proved in her second start that she can challenge in a field full of closers. In her try at stakes last out she never fired, and couldn’t make up any ground in the second half. She showed an excellent close in her first race, and there should be some early speed here to set her up. She’ll need to generate more speed than she has so far to avoid a repeat of her last race here.

PP 2) Diet North(IRE) Sired by North Light(IRE), Trained by oostende2. Diet North(IRE) jumps straight out of her maiden win in her debut right here in Virginia, right into stakes competion in her second start. She posted a 71.8 speed in her win, a MSW at seven and a half furlongs. She started at a stalker’s pace, but had grabbed a lead by the first call and she never relinquished it. Both her sire and dam sire liked a longer route of ground in their racing days, and so far that is bearing out in their progeny. North Light’s first crop has an average six to eight point better speed figures over a route than in a sprint. First speeds are typically on the low side, so this filly has room to improve here. The shorter race will probably not be to her benefit here. She will need to stay fairly tight on the lead to have success here.

PP 3) Redoute’s World(AUS) Sired by Redoute’s Choice(AUS), Trained by kensei. Redoute’s World enters this one as the odds on favorite. This is her eighth career start, and she has already notched two stakes victories and a Grade 2 show. Her first seven starts have netted her a 3-3-1-0-0 record with a best speed of 84.9 earned three starts back. Her last race was a seven furlong stakes on a tough Kentucky track, where she held on for second after a wild run down the stretch. All seven career starts have been on turf, and she kicks back in distance after giving up late leads in both of her last two starts. She’s a fast start who tends to adapt her break to the field she’s in, but always right near the lead. By the stats, it would be easy to picture her opening up a big cushion early here, and if she can do that, with her speed she will be hard to catch.

PP 4) Pacification Sired by Sadler’s Wells, Trained by proxy. Pacification is a royally bred filly who makes her seventh career start here. She has one stakes win to her credit, along with a Grade 3 place, though that was on dirt. She earned a 2-1-2-0-0 record in her first six, with a best speed figure of 74.3, earned in her last start. That start was a six and a half furlong stakes in Texas where she bested a short field by nearly two lengths. She seems equally adept on both surfaces, though both of her career wins have been on turf. Her breeding has long router written all over it, but thus far she had much better success in the type of distance range she faces here. She’s a midpack closer, and her sprint close has been quite good in four sprint starts. She’s going to have to run down a speed burner in this one, but if she can hold the early pace, she has the best shot of any here of running down the favorite.

[2,3,1

post-3351","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews","category-reviews","category-uncategorized
["GET
