He has been brought along slower than most. While putting up graded stakes worthy speed figures he was kept in listed stakes where he mopped up the competition. This year his trainer has chosen his spots to try graded runners well. He has had solid success with a second and a third at the grade I level and a win at the grade II level in just three tries in graded stakes. He is always consistent and his stalking style means he will likely be around in the end.

Wonderboy Cougar (IRE) looks like a runner who has potentially lost a step. Last time out he was well beaten by the favorite here when he never seemed to get into the race. He likes to be near the front but I am not real sure what to expect from him this week. He has yet to win a race this year but at the same time seems capable of contending. Slither is a runner that also got beat by the favorite last time out after never really getting into the race. Prior to that he has had a great season running nice speed figures winning a grade II and running second in a couple of big grade I races. He is a mid pack closer and needs to hit the board here to make the Breeder’s Bowl Classic field.

Virtuoso is taking on his elders and at 19/1 represents a great betting value. The favorite’s last race aside he has run speed figures right up with there with his older rivals. His best speed figures have come at this distance with the only draw back being how far behind the early pace he falls. If he has the run in him he might upset this field.

Race: 3007.3316 Breeders’ Bowl Mile Prep – Grade I – $500,000
Track: Ascot
Restrictions: All horses, 4 years old and up
Distance: One mile on the Turf

An off turf surface drew a full field of runners making a final prep for the Breeder’s Bowl Mile or a last ditch effort to make that field. Thirteenth Date and New Storm share favoritism on the morning line. Thirteenth Date is the number two ranked classic turf filly and she in a very good miler. She comes off a victory in the grade I Queen Ascot stakes. She has three wins in miles this year and has not finished off the board once this season. Now though she faces the boys and how will she run against some tough males.

New Storm is making his first run at a mile in well over a year. He has been a middle distance runner winning graded stakes at nine and ten furlongs. He is a come from behind runner with a strong kick. He is on a pretty good roll right now but if experience at the distance is a factor in this race he might not perform so well.

Congo is a runner that likes to be near the lead. He is a confirmed turf miler who has run some nice speed figures while winning graded stakes. Last time out he just missed at this level although in two lifetime starts on an off surface he has not earned a dime. Sip of Saki has run some big speed figures like his 110-speed figure two races back while finishing second. His only win of the year though has come on dirt, despite being a better turf horse to this point. He can run the freak figure so you must respect.

Devil’s Slide was one of the top three year old filly turf runners from last year. She had been an in between runner running well at the middle distances of nine and ten furlongs. She tried a mile in her last race and exploded. The cut back in distance seemed to revitalized her closing kick as she just missed against the favorite Thirteenth Date. If you like Thirteenth Date you have to like Devil’s Slide.

Race: 3007.0314 Three Smokestacks Stakes – Grade I – $500,000
Track: Kentucky
Restrictions: Fillies and mares, 3 years old and up
Distance: A mile and one eighth on the Dirt

K’s Joan Bach is the favorite and she has never won a graded race in her career. She has had a couple of runs in graded company this year and both times she just missed losing by a half length in each race. She normally is mid pack or towards the back of the pack in the early stages and closes with a rush. She appears to be well spotted to get her first graded win and take the next step to the Breeder’s Bowl.

Otto History is the second favorite and already has earned a million and a half in eleven career starts. She is all speed which sets up well if the two favorites tangle in the end it will be a closer trying to chase down the speed. She has five graded wins thus far this year and should be right there in the end this week.

Fall Classic is a lightly raced four year old who is improving with every start in the second half of this year. She has been right in the thick of things in her last four races three of which were graded stakes. She will likely come from well off the pace and facing a front runner like Otto History could be tough or it could be a blessing if the pace is hot.

Race: 3007.2815 Canada Turf – Grade I – $1,000,000
Track: Ontario
Restrictions: All horses, 3 years old and up
Distance: A mile and one half on the Turf

Last week saw three grade I races at this distance and this week we get another. Most of the big names prepped last week with a couple of upsets and this week Puppet Regime is the favorite that will try to keep from being upset. He was the upset winner of the Sand Castle Golden Turf. He exploded onto the scene that week and has been right there with the big boys ever since. He can run that huge speed figure and has been consistent in nearly ever race since. His stalking style should keep him in the race early so look out.

Yoko Bone O found new life when put back on the turf after almost two years of nothing but dirt races. He has won three in a row since the switch including a grade II in his last. He is a deep closer in good form and now catches a field with only one real good horse. He should do well here and if Puppet Regime is not on his game he could sneak up and score his first grade I win.

I dug deep but 22/1 Kiss of Betrayl (IRE) looks like a true sleeper pick. She is a three year old filly not only taking on older runners but taking on older boys. She cannot hold a candle to the top two selections here but she seems to fit right in with the rest of this field. Her last race was against older fillies in a grade II where she finished second. She has a real chance of hitting the board here.

Race: 3007.0315 Scottsdale BB Stakes – Grade I – $500,000
Track: Kentucky
Restrictions: All horses, 3 years old and up
Distance: Six furlongs on the Dirt

Gathering Momentum is one of those rare miler sprinter horses. He won a grade I race last time out at a mile and can run with the best of them in sprints as he won the grade I Gary Carter earlier this year. He gets the favorite status here against a solid bunch of sprinters. He does his best when he gets the lead so if the gates open and he is on the lead watch out.

Wonderboy DJ just missed last time out in the grade I Tri-City. He has a couple of grade III wins this year to go along with a couple of just misses in grade I races. He is a stalker and should be fairly close to the pace in the early stages if all is well with him. Empire of the Sun won this race last year but has not been on top of his game this year. His only win has come in an allowance race at a mile. He looked much better last time out setting the pace in the Tri-City and if his form is turning around he is a danger with speed.

Scoobs Connection has not run this short since he was a two year old.
