Continuing with the Ireland Two-Year-Old Carnival, this week sees the staging of the Nationwide Stakes \u2013 GP1<\/U> over seven furlongs of turf. With a combined purse of half a million dollars in prise money this year\u2019s race has drawn a capacity field all hoping to take the step-up to Group One level.<\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>

The race has been in existence since 2001 with all five previous winners going-on to achieve only moderate success as a three-year-old and older. Of all the winners none has gone on to add another Group One to their resumes and if fact only one, the 2004 winner Valamar<\/B>, has added another graded race when winning the Rantofan Handicap \u2013 GP3 <\/U>early in his three-year-old season. As one of the traditional lead-up races to the Breeders Bowl Juvenile Turf \u2013 GP1<\/U>, it comes as a surprise that the best result a winner of the Nationwide Stakes \u2013 GP<\/U>1 has been able to achieve in the Breeders Bowl is a fourth by the 2003 winner Chief Stallion<\/B>. While all have gone on to win a least one additional stakes races none have been able to amass a million dollars in prize money; however last years winner Northern Chant,<\/B> is getting close through his five stakes wins during the current season.<\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>

Has been finishing off races very strongly and is proven over the distance, looks the one they all have to beat. Has come in as clear favourite and with A.Read aboard connections should have acceptance speech prepared.<\/P>

Returned to the winners stall last race when impressively took-out the Senior Don Memorial Stakes<\/U> when dropped back to six furlongs. Likes to lead in his races and racing pattern suggests that seven furlongs may be a fraction further than his best. Chances not helped by bad post position but ace jockey Z.Kentucky knows how to handle bad posts.<\/P>

Was even throughout when finished third in the Bad Deal Stakes \u2013 GP3<\/U> behind today\u2019s\u2019 race rival Leo\u2019s Jewels.<\/B> Winner was too good last start and hard to see him turning the tables here, is only lightly raced and capable of further improvement.<\/P>

Reading<\/SPAN><\/st1:place><\/st1:City> through the <\/B>list of runners Leo\u2019s Jewels <\/B>looks to be standout, he has been super impressive to date and I suspect that he will keep his undefeated record in tact after this race. The only danger to Leo\u2019s Jewels<\/B> loosening his firm grip on the Nationwide trophy is the sight possibility of rain which would turn the race into a lottery. His danger, if any, appears to be another undefeated colt in Grand Kiss<\/B> who has done nothing wrong to date. Fighting out for the minor placing looks to be a contest in three between More Than My Share<\/B>, Rainband<\/B> and Tiger\u2019s Eye<\/B>. For many of the connections of the other runners, running in a Group One alone will bring enormous pride and as the saying goes \u201cyou have to be in it to win it\u201d; and you never know stranger things have happened in racing before.<\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>
