Or maybe a (Dayton) Penguin? Thirteen fillies and mares, 3 years old and older, will contest the Claiming Jewel – The Spiked Heels Starter Allowance on Saturday, at 6.5 furlongs on Arizona’s dirt course. And it’s a wide open field, with many horses sharing similar numbers, styles, and class. A very tough race indeed. The horses by Post Position:

PP 1 – Beast of Belmont (Albert The Great x Storm Cat x Le Fabuleux) starts off at the rail and as the 2nd choice in the betting at 4/1, and is certainly going to be a factor. When she is running her best race, this kkat127 charge usually likes to come from midpack and takes a while to run down her opponents. She’s coming off of 3 successive 90+ speed factor races, in fact running a 91, 92, and 93 those last three outings. Her numbers show her capable of running with these, but she’s definitely stepping up in class a bit here. One to watch, especially if there’s an honest pace.

PP 2 – Ms Eskimo Endorse (Eskimo x Bank Book x Blue Ensign). The good news is her last time out she rallied from 11th at the halfway mark to a length and a quarter win. The bad news is that was in a $2,000 claimer, where she was promptly snapped up by current trainer boeufcake. A versatile runner who can stalk as well as close, her overall numbers make it a tricky proposition to bet on a win here, but with her best race, she definitely has a chance to get up for a check.

PP 3 – Bowman’s Treasure (Bowman’s Band x Giant’s Causeway x Seeking the Gold) is the longest shot in the field at 55/1, and although this brightvalr charge has had some success in the low claim area, and even in conditioned allowances, this three year old’s top lifetime speed figure is 79, which will probably be short for this field. Still, that was her last race out, and she’s only three, so she has the right to improve, but doing it against this class of competition, as well as against older fillies and mares, makes it that much tougher. Probably not today.

PP 4 – Star Jasmine (Storm Boot x Broad Brush x Miswaki) comes in with a spiffy 2 wins in 2 starts for her current trainer, hawk2. She also posted a career high speed of 92 last time out, albeit in a $5000 conditioned claiming race. This four year old likes to stay near the leader, and with the right pace and another speed improvement like last time, might surprise some with some boxcar type payoffs.

PP 5 – Rewardover(ARG) (Avanzado(ARG) x Luskin Star(AUS) x Noalcoholic(FR)). This multinationally-bred four year old filly was claimed out of her maiden win by current owner viperthree, which is also her only lifetime trip to the winner’s circle. She’s had a tough time cracking the top three since racing with non-maidens, although she has shown a remarkable ability to pass tired horses in the lane in her races, twice coming from 9th to finish 4th, and once from 11th to finish 5th. All of those races were sprints too. If she can get started earlier this time, she has an outside chance for a check here.

PP 6 – I Told You So (Vindication x Cloud Cover x Round Table Jr) picks a tough spot for her first race under new owner/trainer unbearable. This four year old was claimed off of a 3rd place finish, with a career-best speed fig of 81. Barring a very large improvement off of that race, though, this girl looks like she may be a bit out of her element.

PP 7 – Dayfly’s Prosper (Dayjur x Mr. Prospector x Globe) comes in as the morning line favorite, and a fairly solid one. This four year old filly was claimed by trainer/owner eddington three races back, and has run in starters ever since, where he’s run between 84-102, some very good speed numbers for this company. Her form may be a bit suspect here though, as she finished 7th last time out, after a 2nd, which in turn followed a very nice win at first asking for her new barn. She likes to stay on or near the lead, and there doesn’t seem to be a great deal of early speed here to push her, with the possible exception of the ninth post entrant, Home Rented Home. A solid favorite, and maybe even good value at 3/1.

PP 8 – Our Girl (Capote x Our Native x Hail to Reason) was claimed by the faerietail barn some seven races ago, and she’s been in starters and allowances since then, with mixed results (everything from a win to a 13th place finish). Her numbers don’t scream for notice, but she’s been racing in as good a company lately as anyone in this field, and while a mid eighties number probably won’t win here, she’s also eligible for improvement. When she’s on she has the ability to stalk near the pace, and press it if necessary. Another one here that has a decent shot with a good pace (and at a very nice price too), especially underneath exactas and trifectas.

PP 9 – Home Rented Home (Came Home x Capote x Storm Bird) gets saddled by the rams barn, who claimed this four year old filly three races back. She’s shown the most insistent early speed in this field, and if everything falls her way, she has the talent to wire this field, but she’ll need a lot of things to go right for her. There are a whole host of stalkers here, and several of them may indeed go out with ‘Home to set hot fractions. There are also traffic issues, coming out of the 9th gate, where she’ll have to run a bit to get clear. Have to include this gal in your tickets.

PP 10 – Rod’s Ruffryder (Selkirk x Cat Thief x Pine Bluff) is the 3rd longest shot in this group (at 35/1), and a rarity in this field: a one-owner horse. In fact, the only other one is 55/1 shot Bowman’s Treasure. Her numbers look a bit light with these, and added to the fact that she’s also going up against older girls for the first time, she’ll need a stunning performance to get to the upper half of this field. She may also try to get to the front early, as in her last win (4 races back), she wired the field. Probably not this time.

PP 11 – American Pie (Johannesburg x Quiet American x Pancho Villa) was just claimed last time out by owner/trainer matts2912. Though she won that $4,000 claiming race, this 5 year old was even more impressive, at least speed figure-wise, her two times out before that, both 3rds in $9,100 allowance tilts where she ran a 92 and 93. Yet another stalker/closer type, this girl’s yet another with a fine shot if the pace is hot but not suicidal.

PP 12 – Foxcart (Waquoit x Grand Lodge(IRE) x Boldwood) is another longshot, coming in at 47/1. She’s a four year old who just hasn’t been running the kind of speed numbers that would seem to be competitive with most of these. With one win in 21 outings, and not posting higher than a 76 in her last 14 races, this gal will be in need of a bit of a miracle for a check here. On the other hand, if she can somehow recapture the magic of early in her 3 yr old season (she broke her maiden with a 90 SF in a Maiden Special), there might be a storybook ending. But I doubt it.

PP 13 – Dayton Penguin (La Saboteur x Pirates Bounty x Danzig) is a veteran of 33 races coming into this one, and has a good chance from the extreme outside post here. She’s a hard-trying girl who’s got a string of 4 straight races with no worse than a third place finish. She, like many here, will try to stay with the leader(s), and run by down the stretch. Trainer mailace7 looks to have this five year old beauty primed and ready. If she runs her best race, she’ll cash a check.

[2

post-2719","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
