AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Hzsaf Lies threw his flag in the sand on Saturday, declaring himself the best bargain-bred distance runner in 2014 with a dominating victory in the Bargain Distance Challenge on Bargain Bowl day in New Zealand.

The 5-year-old favorite backed up the hype, rolling to his second straight listed stakes victory while receiving very little challenge, posting a 98 speed figure and adding another notch to the belt of Bargain Bred Racing Series stalwart owner Hawkz.

The race was run over 12 furlongs on fast dirt, open to 3-year-olds and older. The winner got the largest share of a $100,000 purse.

It was a textbook run from Hzsaf Lies, satisfied to run a handful of lengths off the lead coming out of the gate, stalking the frontrunners and then making his move. Jockey K Hawkz began to push his mount at five furlongs before giving him the OK to go at six furlongs. The jockey-horse duo was in the lead by 7.5 furlongs and never blinked, unleashing a class run that saw Hzsaf Lies win by five and a half lengths over the closest challenger.

“We knew what we had,” jockey K Hawkz said. “I didn’t want to overthink it. I let him run his race and make his move, and there was no question. What a great moment.”

Plano8 owned second-favorite Knightly Magic ran as expected, watching from the back and then closing hard past the rest of the pack to finish runner-up. But he never had anything for the victor, finishing as the bridesmaid to Hzsaf Lies’ bride for the second consecutive race. This one, however, wasn’t close.

“If we were being honest with ourselves, we knew that this might not be the perfect fit for Knightly Magic,” Plano said. “He’s at his best at even longer distances, and I think he showed that today, running out of room. He’s still just four years old, and we expect to still be able to win some big races with him. Hat’s off to Hawkz and his horse today — he was the best on the track.”

Surprises Kaempfer and Buoyant Dinosaur finished third and fourth for venerable bargain owner Lgbost, with the ladies’ teams likely pleased as punch with their results. Kaempfer ran steady and held her position throughout, while the 103/1 Buoyant Dinosaur put together a career-best effort, running mid-pack and letting some of the early pacesetters lose steam and fall back.

Steam Table Ham was the leader out of the gates, but didn’t have the stamina to hold on, fading at the midway point and ultimately finishing in fifth, 14 ¾ lengths back.

Hzsaf Lies paid $5.50 for win, 3.70 for place and $2.10 for show, and Knightly Magic paid little more in the place and show categories. Exactas went for $19.00, while trifecta bettors were the big winners, seeing a payout of $419.70.

The race was run in 2:31.6.

The full order of finish was: Hzsaf Lies, Knightly magic, Kaempfer, Buoyant Dinosaur, Steam Table Ham, Nightcall, Square Hat, Bad Line, Proba Dancehall, Brazos Run, Woftam Star.
