Out of the 14 entrants in this year’s 7th running of the New Hampshire Handicap-G1, seven of them are ranked in the top twenty. This race has always brought a competitive field as the previous six runnings have finished with SR of 115, 115, 124, 112, 119 and 116. The race record was set in 2003 by PRINCE OF GOLD at 1:46 4/5. This race is almost too hard to call as the majority of the runners have an equal chance of winning and many questions may be answered here today. With so many notable names running the media has been in a frenzied mode all week and I don’t think that this race will have any problems living up to the hype. Weather doesn’t seem to factor today as the track has been rated fast as we go at nine furlongs. Our entrants are as follows:

PP 1

15/1 ACT OF GOD B Soft ( 72 – 10 – 3 – 11 – 14% )

Trainer: lenny13

4 Year Old Colt (EMPIRE MAKER x A.P. He does have two non-graded wins and has managed to hit the board twice in graded company but it’s hard to say if the maturity of turning four has kicked in yet. Those last two allowance wins were not very impressive ones and I would probably have liked to see a non-graded race or two before trying on this level again. He’ll need a career best to have any hope of cashing a check.

PP 2

9/1 TOY MAKER M Imahoff ( 115 – 13 – 15 – 15 – 11% )

Trainer: darshaan

4 Year Old Colt (HARLAN’S HOLIDAY x DARSHAAN(ENG) x HAIL TO REASON)

Dirt Classic Rank : 7

As a recent addition to the top ten, Toy Maker ran most of last year in the allowance ranks and trainer darshaan waited until mid-October to try him in his second stake attempt. What he’s done since then has been most impressive as he has four stake victories in six tries including three graded wins. The only mark against him was two races back in the Sand Castle Classic-G1 where he finished a dissapointing 11th at double digit odds. However, he has shown very recently that he has the power to take down the field as he did at the first of the year in the Glenn Handicap-G1 where he finished with a lifetime best 111 SF while beating fellow entrants Call Of The Wild II and Crafty Victory as well as division notables such as Squall Me Halo, Fly For Buda and Sensationalize.

PP 3

10/1 HERE FOR THE PARTY B Collins ( 99 – 13 – 12 – 7 – 13% )

Trainer: babyfarm

4 Year Old Colt (HANSEL x TREMPOLINO x DANZIG)

Dirt Classic Rank : 50

With a bad case of the “seconditis”, Here For The Party has seen victory snatched from him four times in five stake races and has yet to gain his first stakes win. This has not swayed his tenacity at all though as he’s ran some bang up races and trainer babyfarm hasn’t shied away from graded competition. He narrowly missed last time out in Mohammed Ali Stakes-G3 where he took the lead in the stretch but was nipped at the wire in a photo finish by Not Bluffing. He literally tore up the three year old division last year with five consecutive graded wins but after the Bluegrass he managed only one other stake win and has had to settle for two allowance victories lately. He has bounced back nicely though as he finished a very close second last time out in the Soupy Sails Classic-G2 and the allowance races may have been what was needed for him to get his fire back in his belly. He’ll need his “A” game today as the field seems extremely tough.

PP 5

5/1 CALL OF THE WILD II Z Babb ( 51 – 4 – 8 – 3 – 8% )

Trainer: gipper8

5 Year Old Horse (WAR CHANT x NUREYEV x VALID APPEAL)

Dirt Classic Rank : 6

Call Of The Wild II, despite two others starters ranking better in this division, grabs the spotlight for our morning line favorite. This horse really made a name for himself last year as he took down both the Sand Castle Classic-G1 and the Breeders Bowl Classic-G1 on his way to making over $8,000,000 in lifetime starts. However, he gave two dismal performances right after BB day but bounced back nicely last time out in a repeat attempt at the Sand Castle with a 3rd place finish and 111 SR. He stands a good chance to move up in ranking if he can prove he deserves the top spot today.

PP 6

8/1 CRAFTY VICTORY P Word ( 190 – 16 – 18 – 26 – 8% )

Trainer: ssj4vegeta

4 Year Old Colt (VICTORY GALLOP x CRAFTY PROSPECTOR x EASTERN ECHO)

Dirt Classic Rank : 13

Busting out of gate #6, Crafty Victory has cashed more than his share of checks so far this year. He has hit the board in five of six race this year but the winner’s circle has eluded him. His last win came last September in the Winchester Park Derby-G2 but he tied his career best SR rating last time out with a 107 and his mid-pack running style may set up nicely for another good showing. I’m not sure if it will be enough to finally get his first win of the year but you can’t count him out. He’ll be in the mix somewhere but the pace more than his ability will determine the outcome.

PP 7

97/1 CRAFY DIXIECRAT R Reveiz ( 62 – 1 – 8 – 4 – 2% )

Trainer: bmorris

3 Year Old Colt (DIXIELAND BAND x TALE OF THE CAT x CRAFTY PROSPECTOR)

Dirt Classic Rank : 41

If not for his last race in the MD Breeders Bowl-G3 for 3yo+, I would have to say that Crafy Dixiecrat’s entry today was a RAFI oversight. However, running a three year old this time of year against older company at this level two races in a row has to be intentional. He does have a Graded win in The You’re 18 Right? Stakes-G2 (I love that name. Kind of reminds me of me) against 3yo only but that win is the only thing keeping him from triple digit odds. Does the tote board go that high? As a winner of five graded races, most notably last year’s The New Yorker-G1 and the Travelers Stakes-G1, he looked like a horse in cruise control but after a bad race in the Sand Castle Classic-G1 he’s lost his form and has finished off the board in four consecutive races including two 10th place finishes lately. I would love to see a return to the Macho Niner of last year but with the recent races I’d have to say his chance are slim at best. He does have one graded win in his bag and several close ones as well but will need to show some level of consistency in order to take down this very rough field. His last showing was enough to move him into the top twenty and he could move even further down with a good showing here today. Veteran jockey G Walker is not off to a good start this year and it will take all of his 10 years of experience to weave his way in and out of traffic to get the victory.

PP 11

11/1 KEY TO DUBAI R Newsome ( 71 – 9 – 8 – 5 – 13% )

Trainer: ddahl

5 Year Old Horse (E DUBAI x KEY TO THE MINT x L’ENJOLEUR)

Dirt Classic Rank : 134

Things that my you go hmmmm. Fresh off a win last time out in the Maryland Special Handicap-G1, where he saved ground and fiished under a strong whip, he looks to repeat and show his domination. He may have a tougher time of it in this race as we have four out of the top 13 horses scheduled to compete against him. This is his second start after an allowance prep race and I like his chances.
