We are here primarily today for the Silent View challenge stakes, the days premier event over 7 ½ furlongs for older fillies and mares. There’s a nice field assembled, but it is hard to choose a definite winner, as the market demonstrates with only 10 points separating the whole field.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Let’s see if we can sort ‘em out anyway, something’s gotta win it!

In stall 1 is Gramona from the rheffisimo barn. This son of Cat Thief out of the useful racemare Velasquita is a nice individual who has won six of her twenty four starts. She hasn’t won this year but has run some nice races including when third beaten under two lengths in the Group 2 Castle Point stakes. She seems to be well up to this class, but just struggles to get her head in front when it really matters, but her stalking tactics under top local jockey A Craig could see her go really close here. 7/1 could be a very decent price for this undoubtedly decent filly if she finally finds the form her trainer seems to believe her capable of.

Stall 2 is home to Gold Forest, and the evil enemy known as the bookies make her the jolly old favourite at 7/2. Another who has run very well without winning on her last six starts, she has managed to rustle up 4 stakes wins from her 10 from 34 impressive record. There is no doubt that her best form will make her very hard to beat here, but the field will take a little heart from the fact that her last couple of starts were a bit disappointing. It’s just possible that she is more effective over slightly further, but the 109 speed rating three back gives lie to this stat. Certain to be up with the early pace, AHollerhan will try to coax a big run from her, and there is no reason to think that she will not be close up here.

Stall 3 houses Lenny14’s Man on Fire and this one is next best at 4/1. The beautifully bred daughter of Woodman out of a daughter of super sprinter Ajdal has managed to amass 4 stakes wins so far. She always seems to give her true running and has placed in several group races. Always likely to run close to the pace, she never seems to run a poor race and will certainly be given a good ride by Tommy Cooper, with a little bit being held back under the fez. The general feeling of the public is that she could run well, and I agree, this could be the winner.

Blushing Gold breaks from stall 4 and is quite a big price at 11/1. Bytor’s daughter of Sand Prospector is a little behind these in terms of proven class, but has managed to pick up a few nice allowance wins among her 9 lifetime wins from 34 starts. Last time out, in her first step up to stakes company she finished sixth, but was only beaten just over 5 lengths with a 92 speed rating, but she did break the hundred barrier in allowances so might improve a little from that. She’s likely to be at the rear of the field early, and jockey RT Salo will be hoping to conjure a strong late run from her.

Street Birdy(IRE) comes next from stall 5 and there is a lot to like about curlypuub’s beautifully bred filly by Street Cry out of a Forty Niner mare. She is consistent in listed stakes company, although has always found herself a little stretched when stepped up to group class, which her trainer has asked her to attempt several times. Her 7 wins from 20 starts include 3 stakes, and she usually finished in the top three in this sort of class. That said, she did put in an inexplicably poor run last time out when seventh in the When Paul met Ben stakes which is probably the reason why P Riggs is sitting on an 8/1 shot instead of a shorter price. The pair will try to track the pace before winding it up from halfway.

Blues Buda in stall 6 is no spring chicken, but click’s rather unfashionably bred six year old daughter of Scatmandu seems to have taken on a new lease of life since switching from dirt to turf seven runs back. She racked up 4 straight wins including two stakes, before running a cracking second in the Group 3 Le Florostat stakes with a nice 103 speed. Two subsequent runs in Group company have been slightly less eye catching, but dropping back to listed stakes and stepping up to a distance which saw her run 112 speed on dirt a few years back, she must represent value at 5/1. J Bradley is in the plate today, and comes here in good form and she should get a little closer to the pace over this distance and company than in the two previous runs which could see her sweeping to the front with a couple to run. Likely to hold on if that’s the case, this pairing could take a lot of beating today.

Quiet Brush is the outsider of the field at 14/1 and is held by Blushing Gold on their last run. Nwopizes’ four year old daughter of Real Quiet out of a Broad Brush mare is a decent type however, and includes a stakes race among her 7 wins from 31 starts. Whilst there is no doubting her ability, she seems to have gone to the well a lot this season with 9 races since the turn of the year and since the last two were big defeats, it’s just possible that she needs a break. Her trainer is best placed to judge that, however, and she is obviously still showing some fire in her morning work, so lets see if Bo Edwards can galvanize another big run from her.

Noitsabe’s Grand Seb(IRE) in stall 8 is the polar opposite of Quiet Brush. The daughter of Grand Lodge never made it to the racecourse till she was 4, but has made up for lost time since. She has won 6 times from 17 starts and while only one of those was in stakes races, she has put in some nice efforts in good company. She has a bit to find with several of these in terms of speeds, but is one of the few in the field who could still be improving so it’s not impossible. Fa Raish is the least experience jockey in the field, so maybe the pairing will make up for lack of racecourse experience with youthful exuberance. 13/1 is probably a realistic price based on what she’s achieved, but if that improvement arrives she could be a live outsider.

Hollaback Girl from stall 9 is a 7/1 shot here.Super23’s four year old daughter of Danzig has also been lightly raced having picked up 4 wins from 13 starts. She’s another with plenty of improvement in her thanks to this sympathetic handling and to be honest, would not need to step up much from her previous form to take a major hand in the finish here. Two back she clocked up a 103 speed figure when winning the California French special stakes and although not relishing the step up to Group class last time out, is certain to find conditions more to her liking here. She has a more than capable pilot in L Anderson and her outside draw shouldn’t inconvenience her as she is likely to be held up for a late run all of which points to a leading chance.

Last but by no means least, is Smart Kirby in stall 10. Kirby55’s daughter of Event of the year is a very likeable filly who competed at the very highest level last year and always acquitted herself honourably. Second in the Group 1 Stargazer Oaks was the highlight of a very successful year which included 3 stakes wins. She suffered a setback at the end of a very busy season, and was given a break to recover, followed by a steady, confidence building schedule of allowance races before getting back into stakes races on her last two runs. She holds Street Birdy on her last win and certainly seems to be going the right way again judged on that run, with a nice 101 speed. K Mitchell will keep her close to the pace and she should go really well here if it doesn’t take too much out of her going the long way round the outside of the field. She’s certainly coming back to hand and 9/1 could be value here.

A nice field of distaffers stand their ground for a decent $70,000 purse and the race looks set up for an exciting finish. I’ll take Man on Fire to hold off the fast finishing Hollaback Girl with Gramona for third in a blanket finish.

Good luck to all connections.

[2,3,1

post-2490","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews","category-reviews","category-uncategorized
["GET
