The last Saturday of April every year the North California Racing Association (NoCRA) hosts Bikini Day to welcome the arrival of Spring and the coming of Summer. On this day anyone arriving at the track in a Bikini gets free entry and a free bottle of SPF 15+ sunscreen. The only unfortunate part of this is that a greater proportion of the crowd should not be seen dead in a bikini, this particuarly applies to the male members of the crowd. This year also sees the inaugral staging of the “Miss North Californian Racing Association Bikini Suit” pagent, (regrettably the person who came up with this title obviously didn’t notice that it would be shortened to Miss NoCRABS). My Editor was invited along to be a guest judge but luckily for me his wife found out, and here I am walking onto the beautiful North Cali Race Track to fulfill his strenuous duties in his stead. The only proviso being that I submit a write up on Saturday’s feature race the Grade III Simon & Simon Stakes over 6.5 Furlongs on the Turf (guess that is so my expenses are deductible). On arrival at the track I headed off to the stabling area to have a look over the field of nine that will compete on a firm track this Saturday.<HR I found a seat and sat down to enjoy my short break, when along came this elderly gentleman shaking his head slowly and muttering something about “unbelievable I don’t believe it” over and over again. He sat beside mevas he kept shaking his head and mumbling, eventually curiosity got the better of me and I asked what he didn’t believe? He just mumbled if he told me I wouldn’t believe it either……I just said “try me”…. Well young fella its like this …. I have this horse he used to be a pretty handy ol’ bugger but his form was going as he got older, well the other day he got away from his groom and bolted down the dirt road into my farm. So I got in me old pick up and was gaining on the old beggar until he jumped the neighbors fence into his newly laid turf farm, and may lightning strike me if I’m lying he just galloped away from me. So I decided to try him racing on grass and what do you know he up and wins an allowance in best time he has run in ages, so I try him in a Stakes next and he runs even faster and was only just beaten in the last few strides. So now the ol’ guy is here running in the feature race. What’s the horse’s name? I ask….. Trail Brook the old guy replies as he got up and walked away still muttering and shaking his head.

Nordkap – (SEATTLE SLEW x CARSON CITY x DRONE) Trainer: Chickadee

Oh well, after a beer and a sandwich it’s back to work. Wandering over to the Chickadee stables I can hear before I can see a horse that is obviously not happy kicking and stomping in the stall. Discretion being the better part of valor I wait outside hoping he will settle, suddenly I hear this feminine yet strong voice telling him to settle and all becomes quiet. Then this striking blonde Amazon appears at the entrance to his stall (6′ 2″ at least muscular yet still feminine). Seeing me standing there she asks if she can help me. Now I may be slow but I am definitely not dumb so I know better than to mention anything about the Miss NoCRABS pagent, so I just ask her about Nordkap. She tells me that his name has Swedish origins (as it turns out that happens to be where this blonde beauty originated from herself – but how I found that out is another story) and that Nordcap, although his recent form has been below what one would expect for this class, has been training well recently and she believes he has a great chance of winning on Saturday. I thank her for her help and think to myself as I walk away that Nordcap has never shown any sign in all his 33 lifetime starts that would ever qualify as being any more than a good quality allowance runner.

Fusaichi Magpie – (FUSAICHI PEGASUS x DANZIG x SEATTLE SLEW) Trainer: Punter59

Next on my list is the other pre-post equal favorite from the very capable Punter Group of Stables, poking my head around the door I call out and am pleased to see the Boss himself venturing my way. He went on to win 6 races including 2 Stakes and the Grade II Fried Rice Mile before running 2nd in the Grade I Maudlin Cup. Unfortunately his form fell off during the latter part of 2005 so we rested him over Christmas and he came back well 1st up this year with another Stakes win. He seems to have shown us that he doesn’t like 2 turns as much any more, so back to one turn here he should run well.” I thanked him said my goodbyes and moved on to review the final runner.

Stealing The Show – (GERI x DANZIG CONNECTION x PLEASANT COLONY) Trainer: Rohirrim

Walking into the Rohirrim Stable area imagine my surprise to find the stall completely empty, no horse no tack nobody. I headed over to the track office to see if officialdom could shed some light on Stealing The Show’s whereabouts. It appears that after his 2 recent wins in his last 2 starts there was a threat received that he would be knobbled so the race committee gave permission to his connections that he could be moved to an unknown secure area. Nothing like a little intrigue to spice up a race report, so I made a few phone calls and tracked down his new location. On talking to someone at Rohirrim Stables (who wished to remain anonymous) they told me that the night before an email was received threatening that the horse would be got at if he ran on Saturday. Looking back over his earlier races we find that he has a 2 and 3yo Grade III win to his credit as well as Gr I place as a 2yo, so he has some obvious ability and maybe his recent wins suggests that he could be reclaiming that form.

Now we have had a chance to look over the field of nine starters, we come to the difficult part, trying to decide where to place our hard earned money. Ignoring his strange training methods Broohar2’s Best Rock Yet has certainly shown his ability over the surface and distance.
