Thanks for joining us at the Pastures of Green here in Vermont, for a wonderful and truly fun series. We are back for the third race in the OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN RACE SERIES. The winner of the first race, Eminent Minstrel is back for more and last races\u2019 winner, Meat Loaf Loop proved to be a rude host by winning the second in the series. Greek Judge and Brother Hot, both second place finishers in the first two are here as well so we should have a slam bang finish. <\/p>\n

No disrespect meant to these truly respected veterans but I\u2019ve tried to write this preview with a bent toward having some fun with this series. I hope that you enjoy it and accept it with that in mind. We\u2019ve got a nicely matched field of old codgers so let\u2019s take a look before one of them expires!:<\/font>\t\t\t\t\t

A new entry in our series, this old guy decided to step away from the claimers to give the OMOTM series a try. There is no truth to the rumor that the last time he won an allowance race it was a couple of years ago against cart horses in Mexico. On the other hand, his last win was a couple of years ago in Mexico\u2026hmmm. He is moving down in distance so the race may be a bit easier on him than his past couple of outings. His sire was Banquet Table and I hope that he is able to push himself away from the oats and grain to compete in this race. Trainer Winterhart remarked that at least he has the inside post so he won\u2019t have to run as far as the other vets.<\/p>\n

Okay, I refuse to make any jokes this time about \u201cI could\u2019ve been A. CONTENDER!\u201d?. Especially because this guy is a big contender in this series. He finished third in the last race and is one of the favorites here and that may be the secret to this series. If you can finish second or third continuously and not get knocked out of the next race for conditions but keep piling up the points you can finish on top. It wasn\u2019t very long ago that this young looking eight year old was running triple digit speed figures and he is a prime candidate to finish among the leaders in the series. Of course that is if any horse that old can keep his interest for that long!<\/p>\n

This fine looking old guy is running his 80th race. He is also running his own Old Man of the Mountain Series. This one however is who can finish most in the BOTTOM THREE. He is leading by a wide margin after finishing 12th and 13th in the last two. At 99\/1 he is looking like a lock for the bottom three again. They used a sun dial to time his last race but he is getting pretty worn out from all of this racing, It may take a calendar to time him by the time this series is over! He is certainly in the spirit of the series though!<\/p>\n

Another lightly raced senior citizen, with only 27 races on this set of tires he may be able to run by the 8 year old \u201cyoungsters\u201d in this race. He finished second in the first OMOTM race then inexplicably his trainer DerbyKing9 forgot about the second race. Which one of these guys is the one with the old fogies forgetfulness?!? Regardless, he is still in good position to be a challenger in this series as he is one of the favorites to finish in the top three and already has points. <\/p>\n

Our winner in the first Series race, trainer Lenny27 was overjoyed to Meatloaf win the second so his old guy can be eligible again. The two of them are the points leaders and Minstrel looks like he is certainly one of the most dangerous. He stumbled a bit in his last outing but that\u2019s to be expected as he isn\u2019t used to all of this running with only 38 races in 8 years! He should run well here for sure.<\/p>\n

A second time starter in the series and one of the \u201cyoungsters\u201d of ONLY 8 years and 22 races. He finished second in the last OMOTM race but has a tendency to yo-yo a bit in his starts. That means that this time he is more liable to sit back, sip his Geritol and watch the other old folks look like they want to be first at the buffet at the nursing home. Trainer Panther 27 need to make sure that this guy doesn\u2019t stop to take a nap on the back stretch! <\/p>\n

One of my favorite historical names is the namesake of this 8 year old senior citizen. He ran an amazing 96 SPF that nearly gave both him AND trainer Browns2 a heart attack. That kind of speed would certainly contend here but the last time before last outing that he ran that fast was during the Roosevelt administration. Perhaps he saw a young filly along the backstretch and the adrenaline rush carried him across the finish line. If that is the case, you can bet that Browns2 will have young ladies lined up there to help out in this prestigious race!<\/p>\n

This horse\u2019s name sounds like a character in Sponge Bob Squarepants but he can run like a seahorse. Five back he ran a 106 SPF but that must have taken a lot out of him as he hasn\u2019t approached that figure since. He\u2019s always competitive but you have to wonder what this 9 year old is doing out here instead of back in the barn looking to sire a few youngsters. Trainer Iant4 must want to get every penny out his investment before he puts him out to pasture. He has a shot of picking up a few shekels here.

Someone will have to explain to me how an eight year old horse has only 19 races. Did he hide in the barn when the trumpet sounded? He should have plenty left at the end of this race, he\u2019s been saving up his entire life for the finishing kick! His 18k in earnings wouldn\u2019t even pay the tip with some of the money the big winners in this race can throw around. But he sure looked good last time out in a strong claimer and you know how a change in trainer can change a horses style. Might be interesting.<\/p>\n

This old fellow had really been training for this race by running dead last and next to last in two of his previous races. One of them with an SPF of 16! That\u2019s sixteen as in 1-6. How do they even time that? But then he went and ruined all of that lazy training and busted close second in his last outing. That was a sprint though and you have to wonder if the extra distance will move him back into the teens speed-wise. Maybe that is what \u201cForced To Hang Ten\u201d really means?<\/p>\n

Does turning 10 years old in horse years make you a teenager? This old guy shows lots of spunk in his races and has been competitive but most of those were in sprints races and he doesn\u2019t seem to much care for the longer distances. You know what happens when an old guy or a teenager has to do something that he doesn\u2019t want to do\u2026this could get ugly. Trainer PutItBack is hoping for an Argentine fountain of youth for his horse but those are a bit hard to find.<\/p>\n

Our morning line favorite has been running some successful miles lately, unfortunately he\u2019s been running in races that were a little longer than that. If he can keep up his speed for the entire mile this time he should contend here. Maybe his old eyes just need some glasses so he can see where the finish line is. He has three quarter of a million in earnings though so he must still know how to win\u2026as long as he can remember!<\/p>\n

After a win in his 80th race, our host comes back for more of this great series. He is parked pretty far outside and that extra few steps might be a precious waste of energy for him. When you get this old, every step counts! You can bet that he won\u2019t let these other vets move him out of the top five but you have to think that two wins in a row is a bit out of the question. The last time he did that, most of the Sim horses were just a gleam in their sires eyes! Trainer SunnyBank would sure love to see his favorite get over that magical half a million in earnings mark though.<\/p>\n

Parked way outside, in the handicap lot is this eight year old with 61 races and 17 wins. That\u2019s almost as many wins as a couple of horses in this field have had races. He\u2019s been running fairly consistently lately but his speed doesn\u2019t look to challenge the favorites. You can bet, however that there are a lot of memories in 17 wins and if he can pull one of them out and replay it, anything goes. Could he possibly make 18 wins?!?<\/p>\n

There are lots of newcomers to this party with the relaxed conditions but I think that some of the series vets will show the way. After all, once you get them off of the wheelchairs and walker and into the gate, anything can happen. MEAT LOAF LOOP <\/b> has to stay in the running so I am going to pick him to finish fourth. BROTHER HOT <\/b> has been just that lately and will challenge here. I figure him to fall just short in third place. That leaves two horses that already have points in the series for the top two spots. I like GREEK JUDGE <\/b> to remember his days pulling the chariots back at the coliseum but I don\u2019t think he will do better than second. Now we come to a horse that could be our first two-time winner in the series. EMINENT MINSTREL <\/b> gets to come back into the series and may mess his schedule again with a second win. <\/p>\n
