This one is for 5yo only, going a mile on the turf for a $75,000 purse. Only four showed up for this event, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a good race.

Starting on the rail at even odds is local Ireland horse Dane’s Cat, owned by latechat. A son of Danehill out of a Storm Cat mare, he participated in the Equinics under Ireland’s banner but was disenchanted with the yielding course. He has earned a cheque in both of his races since. He is stakesplaced, and has run a top speed of 105 at today’s distance. His connections would like nothing more than to finally add that title of stakeswinner to his resume before heading off to the breeding shed with him. Gutsy Mizzi Russell(12%) will do everything she can to make that happen.

In post two at 9/2 is Graninsky, owned by braeside. He is a son of Stravinsky and is out of a Grand Lodge(Ire) mare. He’s one of those strange kind of horses that seems to do very well in allowance competition, but gets stage fright as soon as he’s scheduled to run in a stakes…even an owner restricted one. Perhaps the minimal size of this field will help him out in that respect. He’s run a 101 at 7.5f, which seems to be his favourite distance. Interestingly enough, he’s never bothered to set foot on a dirt track. N. Schreiber(0%) is still wondering how he got a mount in such a small field.

In post three at 7/2 is A.P. Slew II owned by lazysranch. He is by A.P. Indy out of a Mr. Prospector mare, and is anything but lazy, having picked up just over $600K in career earnings. He’s run a 115 twice, once while winning the G3 Craven Stakes, and once while running third in the G1 Mospe Cup. He has also won 6 other stakes, the last coming as recently as New Year’s Eve. Sure, he’s lost a step (or 4), but if you want to bet back class, this is your guy. Up and comer E. Newcomb(20%) is in the saddle.

Rounding out the field at 9/5 is Colonial Childers owned by lopo87. He is by Aptitude and is out of a Pleasant Colony mare. Based on his recent fast-closing fourth in the G1 Crock Of Gold right here in Ireland, top jockey Z. Kentucky(19%) asked for the mount today. His closing style may have been better serviced by his previous jock E C Doyle, however. Even so, one has to be impressed by this guy’s recent form. Raced outside of his best surface and distance for much of his career, he was in claimers and starters up until late October of last season. Once his love of the turf mile was discovered, however, he has been going great guns, running over 100 in four of his five starts under those conditions…and obviously injured in the fifth. A top speed of 111 while losing by a nose in his seasonal bow has to have his connections excited about his future, despite his 32 career starts.

That is our field. Short, but evenly matched. It does look like it could be a pretty darn good race. Good luck to all the runners, and may they all come home sound.

[2

post-2174","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
