Greetings, race fans!

Welcome to Lone Star for the Moon Earl Stakes, a grueling 14-furlong grass test for older runners. Despite the fact he’s never raced beyond 11 furlongs, Jumpin’ Java, the pride of Wardamiral Stables, is a stout 6/5 favorite.

Here’s a quick look at the field:

1) Dales Hollandia, Rosemont 6/1

Winner of over $300k, this Irish-bred has been knocking heads with graded company in most of his recent starts, with some limited success. Has plenty of experience in long races to his credit. Contender.

2) Drunken Cat, Jbfarms 7/1

Form appears to be slipping, and he may be showing the effects of a long, tough career in which he’s won over $400k. However, the switch back to the sod may be just what the doctor ordered. Maybe a contender.

3) Unreal Dancer, Bdljuz 49/1

Refugee from the claiming ranks is in tough here. Distance is also a huge question. Not likely.

4) Urban Flyer, Ianwhipkey 13/1

Form is sharp, having won 3 of his last 4, but this is a large step up the class ladder. Not likely.

5) Ancient History, Kittykats 5/1

Has been fading badly in dirt sprints, and has little grass experience to fall back on. Don’t get the CPU’s 5/1 odds at all… Not likely, but should set the early fractions.

6) Scotch Whiskey, Fairhill 7/1

Hard-knocker keeps contending in long-turf stakes races, and may get part here. Probably will be around at the wire here, too. Contender.

7) Golden Jubilee II, Susanna 9/1

The very definition of “hard-knocker”, this $500k winner keeps defying the “age monster”. A repeat of his last should have him in contention today.

8) Fridley, Bayooherd 12/1

Class and distance are big questions this one must answer to be in contention. Not likely.

9) Jumpin’ Java, Waradmiral 6/5

Has been impressive in his last several starts, getting chunks of the purse in graded stakes races three times. He seems to run better as the distance grows, but this is quite a jump. With distance reservations, bigtime contender.

My picks: 9-7-1
