Here\u2019s a rundown of the field for the second half of New York\u2019s lungbuster weekend, the Grade 1, $500,000 The Cayuga Lake Special. This two mile event drew a field of 13 older males, who will try to complete two full circuits of the dirt track. The surface will be fast as the local weather forecasters see clear skies through the weekend. The side bets amongst the locals here are how many and which entrants will be listed as\u201cdistanced\u201d in the results chart.<\/p>\n

Bernardini 5 year old tries again for his first graded stakes win for owner mtk3man3. This is his first attempt beyond 14 furlongs; comes into this off 2 wins to begin his 2014 campaign, including last out\u2019s Barbs Adventure listed stakes, with a very nice 114 SP#, over this race course, though that was at 10.5 panels. Was 3rd in The Farewell to Cryptobot Grade 1 at 10 furlongs last August, but was well beaten 6th and 9th in two other Grade 1 appearances at 14 furlongs. Will hope to catch them in the lane, but will his late kick be dulled by the extra distance today ? Contender.<\/p>\n

Trainer viper55 sends out this Distorted Humor 5 year old, also seeking his initial graded stakes victory. Was 2nd in his 2014 debut in the Valid Expectation listed stakes, making up a lot of ground late. Ran 2nd in the Grade 1 Geaux Saints at 14 panels last August, easily besting Imminence and Herodoto who are also in today\u2019s race. Was a distant 4th in the Grade 1 Breeders Bowl Marathon in November. Another late runner who will be looking to catch the tiring front runners. Contender.<\/p>\n

This Speightstown 4 year old out of Muninn has started off 2014 with 2 runaway wins in allowance company marathons; last out was at today\u2019s distance. Was a well beaten 7th in his only graded stakes try in the Grade 3 North Country Derby in August. Trainer bsben6 is looking for further improvement in this event, and his runner will need to step up big time to enjoy continued success in this marathon.<\/p>\n

Five year old Rock of Gibraltar runner out of the stakes winning and graded placed mare Junior Achiever has won 4 of last 5. Only graded stakes try was a dismal 12th in the Grade 3 Bedford as a 2 year old. Never worse than 2nd at 10 furlongs and longer, though has never run today\u2019s distance. Won last out in the Keep Rubbing at 11 panels, after being caught late by Imminence in the Barbs Adventure on this surface. Prior to that won at 14 furlongs in the Alyhawk listed stakes. Front runner from trainer simon1966 will need to match strides with co-favorite Impacta and hold off the closers. Tough task.<\/p>\n

Since competing in these marathon type stakes, this 5 year old Pivotal horse out of the stakes winning mare Just Dynamite has blossomed. Last out was a smashing, last to first victory in the Grade 1 Equinics – Mike Wallace Tribute at today\u2019s 16 furlong distance. One prior was also a last to first run in the Grade 1 The Hit Man, also at 2 miles. Also won the Grade 3 Kegstand at 16 panels, giving him an unbeaten record at the distance of today\u2019s event. Owner fairhaven3 has found this horse\u2019s sweet spot; co-favorite will be flying down the lane at the finish.<\/p>\n

Owner spark76 tries graded stakes company for first time since up the track finishes in the Grade 3 Washington Drive and the Grade 2 Out of The City in the summer of 2012. Has never tried today\u2019s distance before, though has a win over the track at 10 panels in a restricted allowance last July. Recent form has been dull, winning once in last 9 starts, failing in 6 listed stakes. Tiznow 6 year old seems up against it in this spot.<\/p>\n

Distorted Humor colt out of Cormoran ran very well in 2014 and 4 year old debut, closing fast for 3rd in the Grade 1 Equinics – Game Mentors at 12 furlongs. Won the Grade 3 North Country at 11 furlongs in August, and followed that up with a 4th in the Grade 1 Geaux Saints at 14 panels, besting Imminence but finishing behind Cooke City Kid in first try against older horses. Has a win over the track at 12 furlongs in the URC Belmont listed stakes last June. Trainer fernando looks for further improvement in second 4 year old start and can be a contender in the lane.<\/p>\n

This 6 year old A P Indy horse out of Xtra Dancing has not won since taking the Grade 3 The Atlanta Cup at 14 furlongs back in April of last year. 2014 debut was a fair 3rd in the Aragon Ransom listed stakes. Prior was a well beaten 12th in the Breeders Bowl Marathon, finishing far behind Impacta, one of today\u2019s co-favorites. Was a good 2nd in the Grade 1 Monster Mash in September at 14 furlongs, but has failed in all 3 attempts at this track. 42ndstreet trainee will need one of his infrequent late rallies to contend in this heat.<\/p>\n

Lightly raced Deep Impact 5 year old from the monologue barn has an impressive record in his marathon career, wining seven of nine starts on dirt at 13 furlongs and beyond. May not have cared for the good surface in last out\u2019s 4th place finish in the Grade 2 The Old Man. Prior was an easy, wire to wire triumph in the Grade 1 Big Apple over this course at 14 panels to close out his 2013 campaign. Had six race winning streak snapped when 2nd in the Breeders Bowl Marathon, after a front running score in the Grade 1 Seattle Stayer at today\u2019s distance. Will get the fast track he prefers, the one to catch and beat.<\/p>\n

Trainer super25 sends out this Dubawi colt out of the stakes winning and graded placed mare Cuba Libra in 3rd straight Grade 1 try at today\u2019s distance. Developing a nice rivalry with today\u2019s co-favorite Cloak And Daggers – was 2nd in the Grade 1 Equinics – Mike Wallace Tribute in his 2014 debut after closing out his 3 year old season with a 2nd to Cloak And Daggers in the Grade 1 The Hit Man, both at 16 panels. Won both the Hardwoodfloor and Call of the Wild listed stakes at 16 furlongs against older as a 3 year old. Will the third time prove the charm ? Any further improvement in his second 4 year old start may turn the tables on Cloak & Daggers. Possible upsetter.<\/p>\n

Won at 14 panels two prior to that in a restricted allowance on the weeds, and followed that with a nice win at 12 panels in the GR Simster listed stakes, also on turf. Owner icbomber2 hoping for further improvement in second 4 year old try and second run on return to dirt.<\/p>\n

Trainer ss89 picks a real tough Grade 1 event for his charge\u2019s graded stakes debut; others look too tough for this guy to contend with today.<\/p>\n

Has only won twice in 17 race career; trainer jrogue looks for further improvement and much racing luck for this one to be involved at the finish.<\/p>\n
