Thanks for joining us at the Pastures of Green here in Vermont, not far from the New Hampshire landmark of the Old Man in the Mountain. We are back for the second race in the OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN RACE SERIES. The winner of the last race, Eminent Minstrel can’t qualify here as a NW1y so he has to root for Meat Loaf to win so he can get back in. He does have the lead in the series with six points though. Greek Judge with three points and Australia Mat with one point didn’t enter so the series contest is wide open. Do you think that those two horses were still too sore to get out of bed after the last race?

No disrespect meant to these truly respected veterans but I’ve tried to write this preview with a bent toward having some fun with this series. I hope that you enjoy it and accept it with that in mind. We’ve got a nicely matched field of old codgers so let’s take a look before one of them expires!:<\/FONT>

Whoo boy, the old Commander was really flying in the first OMOTMS race. He ran an 83 SPF which his best in quite a while but was only good for sixth in the race. That’s not far off the mark though and he is one to look out for here. Trainer Beisbol says that he has upped the Geritol doses this week and his eight year old is feeling more like a spry SIX! He would like to get on the board and get some of those series points. He was glad to get the post so he wouldn’t have to run quite as far.

This is actually the old BORED SIR’s third race in the series as he ran in the pre-curser Old Man of the Mountain Allowance. He ran pretty well in that one finishing fifth but could only pull a ninth last time. Perhaps the first race took too much out of this wily old veteran. He knocked 3 points off of his less than speedy 78 speed figure too. At this rate he will be down in the high forties speed-wise by the end of the series!

How many times do you think this guy had to hear the joke about, “I could’ve been A. CONTENDER!”? Probably the 39 times that he’s run around the track. It wasn’t very long ago that this young looking eight year old was running triple digit speed figures and he is a prime candidate to go one and out in this series by winning the race, then waiting to see if Meat Loaf wins a race so that he can qualify again. If he can just keep it in the place or show positions he could be A. CONTENDER! Oh, sorry about that!

Ahh, our host is back for another turn around the track, his 80th time to run. An eight times Stakes winner and runner for SunnyBank since late in the 2000 season, he has nearly half a million dollars in earnings and an incredible 18 wins. Seven was his lucky number in the first race as he was seventh the entire trip. Horses moved back and forth around him but somehow he consistently tucked in behind whoever was sixth. Quite an accomplishment but not exactly what SunnyBank was looking for from his old guy. Maybe this time he will up the ante on the next race to NW2y so Eminent Minstrel can get back in! As the second favorite, there are a lot of 8, 9 and 10 year olds out there rooting for him so they can qualify for the series.

We have a new mare in this race and she is a very young looking nine year old. Of course there are some rumors that her Dark Grey color is actually done with hair coloring but only her hair dresser knows for sure. This will be the 52nd race for the grand old dame and it’s been quite a while since she hit the winner’s circle. As a matter of fact it was back in 2002 if she can remember back that far. She should certainly give the old guys something to look at in this race though. They may have to look over their shoulders though.

WIND GLOWING has been running claimers for so long, he won once against a field of dinosaurs in a low claimer in the old days. He still makes a BP or two in the claim races but has decided to show the youngsters what it is all about by whipping up on them in this series. While most horses his age would be sitting back collecting social security, he still likes to get out and kick up his heels at the old race course. He may make a CLAIM to fame in this race by getting on the board.

Speaking of Feinting, trainer BillDaily almost feinted when this old double figured age category guy actually led the last OMOTMS race for the first half. He about dropped over at that point and faded back to fifth but he will long remember leading them around the first turn. He will want to jump out front again but that might be a lot to ask an eleven year old. This guy seems to like this series and may be one to watch out for.

What do you do as a jockey on a horse that has run 78 times. Let’s face it, he ought to know his way around by now. Maybe Parks will donate his fee to the owner Pagasus to get some Ensure to feed this horse to up his speed figures a bit. He was fighting INDY JERKY for last place in the first place and the two of them may battle it out again. That’s one good way to make sure that you can stay in the series though, you know the winners get knocked out until Meat Loaf wins a race! Quite ingenious on CHARISMATIC DANCE’s part.

He is the only one in this field that can boast that he finished last in the OMOTM Series. He trailed the field in the first race. INDY JERKY is trying to hang on to reach $10,000 in earnings so he can start drawing Social Security checks. Maybe that last race was just a tune up so that he could get the other horses over confident. Three times on the board in 28 races ought to do a good enough job of that. The morning line is helping too as he is the long shot in this race. His jockey Maguire is almost as old as he is with 15 years experience. I hope they both can make it to the finish.

This old fellow has really been training for this race by running dead last in his past three races. Dead last as in 14th of 14 horses each time. Maybe he just likes the view from back there. Of course those were all sprints so by stretching out in this race he has a chance to finish so far back that he’ll need directions to get to the finish. They may have to time him with a sun dial. He should be in a hot and heavy race for the final spot.

This 12 year old will gladly tell the other horses in the paddock that he was racing the three year old circuit when they were still just a gleam in their Sires eye. There’s no truth to the rumor that this guy actually raced against Mr. Prospector, his is just an offspring. He’s so spry that he even ran a race during the four weeks between the races in this series. When you’ve run 73 times you might as well squeeze in as many as you can before you hit the rocking chair on the front porch of the stable.

Wow, if this nine year old horse runs in the entire series, he will really mess up his average of only running a race a year. Ten races in nine years?!? Don’t you think that would tire the old guy out? This will be his first time on dirt so maybe he will just find out that he is actually allergic to grass and he will be able to come back much quicker now. He’s been around so long that they don’t even remember who his first owner was. Just some *Retired Owner* guy. At least he should be well rested. Yoss really likes this guy in his choices.

This is the second race in the series for this mature mare. (She abhors being called “the old mare”!) She finished eighth in the last OMOTMS race and other than her post position, that was as close as she ever got to the leaders. She still remembers that final win back in 2002 fondly and will glad to tell her grandchildren about it. That may not be too long from now! She is one of the favorites in the race and it would really be a kick in the dentures for the old guys to lose to a MARE!

We have a newcomer to the series and some in this race will call him a youngster of ONLY 8 years and 21 races. He ran a 99 SPF two races back but that was nearly a year and a half ago and if it takes him that long to recover from a race he won’t make many in this series! This will only be his third dirt race so we will see what he can do without the green beneath his hooves. Trainer Panther27 screamed that they put him in the outside post so that his “youngster” would have to run further.

This is surely a fun series and a fun race as well. There are lots of side bets as to which horse doesn’t make it the whole way around WIND GLOWING<\/B> still has the speed and has kept sharp against the youngsters so I am going to pick him to finish fourth. I’m like the mare ANXIOUSLY BET <\/B>to really grate on the old guys with a third place. There will be plenty of horses rooting for our sponsor’s horse MEAT LOAF LOOP <\/B>but I don’t think he will do better than second, breaking a lot of hearts. I’m hoping that the extra distance doesn’t give him a heart attack, but if A. CONTENDER <\/B>makes it around he has enough speed to run past the rest of these geezers. Sorry, no more “contender” jokes from me this time!!
