Like many sprints, it was not certain until the very end who would prevail. When all was said and done, it was the moderate long shot, Ashlea House(IRE), who took the win. He came from the back of the pack like a house afire and in so doing kept his win streak in tact for another week. As was expected, Larrau was at the front of the pack when he broke from the gate. He got in the lead and it looked like he was going to get his first stakes win but was unable to fight off the excellent closing run of Ashlea House so had to settle for a place. Before the winner had completely crossed the wire the show horse was already there. Herbert came from the middle of the pack and was gaining on the leaders when he ran out of race. It was a good run by all three horses that hit the board.
Up this week is a longer sprint on the turf for three year olds. With a purse of $40,000, this seven and a half furling sprint has been named the Salty Fanfare Challenge. Once again the WRC has searched long and hard, or maybe not, for a retired horse less deserving, errr…. I mean deserving, of a stakes race. It seems the only criteria to get a named race is for them is to win a stakes race. Doesn’t seem to matter if the win came against three track journeyman horses. WHOA has started a campaign to at the naming of stakes races or, at least to honor more worthy horses. It remains to be seen if this campaign will bear any fruit. It is also not certain if the ongoing controversy between the two associations is causing an adverse affect at the track. It seems this week only five horses have entered. These are the runners.
Herecomesthebean entered by do little. This sophomore horse is one of several early favorites entered in the race. The front runner either wins the race or not, there is no middle ground for the bay. He is a little inconsistent with his runs and comes in off just such a run. He seems to be a little more comfortable on the grass and maybe this will equate into his first stakes win.
Kandrakar entered by twopine. This sophomore seems to be named in tribute for the center of infinity in the Disney W.I.T.C.H. comic book series. He returns to the turf after tasting the dirt last time out. This will also be his first race of the new year and there is no word about the extended layoff. He is a slow starter but has a strong closing kick when he can get it in gear. Can he start off this year like his freshman year?
Kirk The Captain entered by corzal. This very dark bay sophomore comes into the race struggling mightily this year. This is a colt that looked promising in his freshman year and was improving with each run. It wasn’t until a stakes race in Tennessee that things started taking a downward spiral for him. It begs to be asked, “What happened in Tennessee that has caused this total collapse?”. If his last race is any indication, he may be finding his confidence again, but running another stakes race may not help.
Volodimer entered by hollandia6. This lightly run sophomore comes into the race off a win last time out. It has been awhile since a horse has been represented here by the successful Dutch racing consortium. They bring a horse that has been improving with every race while slowly being stretched out. This will be the longest race of his short career, but this mid-packer seems set to go and having the experience veteran jockey, Vince Gannon, in the irons should help.
Tamariki entered by emtstables. This sophomore is in the fifth gate and also the last of the early favorites. Since moving to the grass, this closer has not lost a race. With each race he has been looking stronger and comes in off a good rest. Although, with only one race under the saddle this year you wonder if he may be a little race rusty.

[2,3,1

post-1951","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews","category-reviews","category-uncategorized
["GET
