Maybe the naming and the less than mediocre mare the race was named for could have had a damaging influence. Aly‘s Chant broke from the gate in the lead and proceeded to run away with the race, or so one would have thought. She ran a strong race and at one point she was five lengths in front of the field. It looked to be for her to take, but the last furlong it became evident she was tiring. This opened the door for Wicked Wench(IRE) and her very experience jockey Vince Gannon. Gannon kept the inexperienced young lady in check and kept her at a steady run which let her slowly but clearly eat up the ground to gain on the leader. In the end Wicked Wench(IRE) was able to drift by Aly‘s Chant to secure the win by one length. Both ladies showed good heart and should be on everyone’s list of ones to watch. The rest of the field looked like first time Maiden runners and where in the race only at the starting gates. Funky Dixieland(IRE) took show only by the sheer fact that she was able to cross under the wire before the rest of the spiritless racers. It is always sad to see a stakes race with so lackluster a performance by most of the field.
Up this week is the $50,000 Jamie Likes Spoons Special, a six and a half furlong sprint. It is named after a retired daughter of Forty Niner who had a strong career if not a spectacular one. At least it is a step in the right direction was a comment heard by one of the spokespersons for WHOA. Maybe the WRC will use a solid champion for future named stakes races, this spokesman went on to say. Anyway, Saturday’s race will be for four year and older horses on the dirt. We have nearly a full field this week and a look at our runners is in order.
Harbor Patrol T entered by dblh. This freshman trainer brings in their earlier claimed chestnut colt looking for his first stakes win. This closer has put in some good runs and looked strong, but has a tendency to slack off in other races. His last few races have been steady and he may have found the consistency necessary to take it to the next level.
Cader Ydris(IRE) entered by oldgraymar. This Irish chestnut comes into the sprint rated 29th in his age for classic distances. This will be only the fourth sprint for the colt, and although he broke the 100 barrier in a sprint last time out, this may not be the ideal place for the graded winner. It could be the trainer feels that they need to shorten up this front runner’s races to keep him competitive. They do have a strong point and having Vince Gannon in the irons can only help.
Herbert entered by oostende4. This light grey horse comes into the race slotted as the favorite. He has won half of his races, but has struggled this year. One could say he may have lost half a step so far this year, but the Belgian trainer believes it has just been a little bad luck and is expecting good things here.
Biff Tornado entered by kingston2. This elder journeyman comes into the race with only one win. His last few races have been claimers where he has failed to make the top half of the field on any surface. Let’s face it, this horse has not lost any ability, because he never had any to lose in the first place. I am just curious how he made it into the race.
Ashlea House(IRE) entered by tryarder. This Irish chestnut comes into the race off of a two win streak. Since moving to the dirt he has gotten stronger and improved on his times. He closer looks healthy and ready to take on the field. He has the up and coming jockey John Dawg in the irons.
Larrau entered by zatopeck. This chestnut colt, most likely named for the southern French town in the Pays Basque mountains, comes in looking for his first stakes win. The colt has looked good this year and is coming in off the best run of his career. He likes to be at the front of the field when he races and will most likely be there again on Saturday.
Publicity(IRE) entered by hillbilly. This horse comes in after recently being claimed by the current owner. He has the one claiming win this year, but has not showed the ability he has in previous years. He is a strong allowance horse but it may be asking too much for him to step it up in a stakes race. He has an inclination at inconsistency at times.
Up Your Alley entered by scotia. This chestnut colt comes in also looking for his first stakes win. He started off the year well only to stumble in a graded stakes last time out. The front runner has the ability and has come close several times, but has not made it over the hurdle to the winner’s circle. The trainer is hoping to change all that here.
Two Stripes entered by follow. This colt will make his debut attempt at a Black Tie event this weekend. This closer is lightly raced and showing improvement, but that is more at routing than sprints. His closing style needs more room to implement than a sprint allows, although he did win last time out at a longer sprint or short route, however you may view it.
Fell Beast entered by 42ndstreet. This colt comes into the race looking to rekindle his form of last year. So far this year he has run fairly well but just seems out of step and of course the results are not worth mentioning. So far he has not done well in stakes company if you subtract his win at the beginning of his sophomore year. Maybe he should stay at allowance level where he has had the best results.
Rapid River entered by congo1. This chestnut colt comes in with disastrous results while running at stakes level. He likes to run at the front of the field and it has been win or die doing so. Allowance racing could just be his forte and maybe that is where he should concentrate his efforts. Although the Black Tie events are more prestigious.
Runningwithbudda entered by jeffsbarn. This dark grey colt comes into the race getting progressively worse. It has been suggested that the minor traffic accident involving the trailer between Kentucky and Tennessee may have shaken his confidence. The trainer has stated this is just plain silly, but it must be noted he has taken this colt from exclusively running on the eastern seaboard to races out west. Is it an attempt to distance his colt form this silly idea to rebuild his confidence?

[2,3,1

post-1876","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews","category-reviews","category-uncategorized
["GET
