This field of three year olds and up will be battling for the Grade III ‘Cap’ trophy as they cover a mile and one sixteenth on the firm turf for a purse of $100,000. Well, no sense babbling, let’s get to it.

(PP1 – 5/1) Gerfly’s Deed, of the Tomsfly stable, holds down the rail for this full field of 14 runners. Gerfly’s Deed, Geri X Shadeed X Naskra, has hit the board in 13 of 20 races, while winning half of his races!!! He has won 6 lower level stakes races and one Grade III in those 10 wins. Gerfly’s Deed is clearly a deep closer and seems to make his run starting at the 3rd call. I am not sure if he can catch the front runners in this field, but if you like the adrenaline rush of betting on a deep closer this is clearly your pick in this one. What else would you expect from the # 74 ranked Turf Classic category horse? Good placement for Tomsfly.

(PP2 – 10/1) Cambados(IRE), of the Noia stable, goes off at 10/1 for the morning line. This Catcher In The Rye(IRE) X Capote X Mr. Prospector horse has broken from the gate in 25 races and has hit the board in 15 of them. The thing that bothers me about Cambados(IRE) is that he has only run in 5 career routes. The thing I love about those 5 career races is that once he was stretched out, he fired over a 100 SP in 3 of his last 4 races. The only graded stakes race to date was his last out in the Equinics Grade I where he was clearly in over his head as he finished up 16th of 20. Although not as deep a closer as Gerfly’s Deed, Cambados(IRE) does like to run off the pace. This is clearly a horse on the rise with this being only his 3rd time out since turning four, so if you like taking a chance on an improving horse, Cambados(IRE) is your bet in this one.

(PP3 – 8/1) Otto Alexander, of the Erendira stable, has run in stakes level company in 6 of 17 career races. This Pulpit X Fast Play X Affirmed 4 year old colt only has one race as a 4 year old, though. Otto Alexander finished 5th in a Grade II race as a 3 year old, but I think he still needs more 4 year old conditioning before he runs with this caliber of company. Otto Alexander prefers to run on the lead, but I doubt he will be able to hold off the closers in this one. He looks to be a very dominating allowance horse, but not quite cut out for Stakes company, at least at this point in his career.

(PP4 – 99/1) Jacobite Charlie, of the Chickadee stable, is only 3 years old. This Dubai Destination X Storm Cat X Mr. Shawklit colt does not belong is this race. He clearly needs to prove he belongs first. Jacobite Charlies has 2 wins in 12 races. He has run in a lower level stakes race and a Grade I in his last two outs, but fired a high of only an 80 SP. He has not shown he has the ability to even compete at this level yet. He needs more allowance conditioning first.

(PP5 – 99/1) Baracuda Waltz(IRE), of the Caar stable, is another 3 year old colt. This Not Impossible(IRE) X Woodman X Northern Dancer entry is even less proven than Jacobite Charlie. Baracuda Waltz(IRE) has only run in stakes company the majority of his career. Most of his races have been in smaller fields at the lower level stakes races as a 2 year old. His highest SP to date is an 83, which will clearly not get into the top five in this field. He will need to run a career race to make the cut here.

(PP6 – 5/1) Lonesome River, of the Oxymoron3 stable, has fired the highest career SP of the race with a 111.3 two races ago in the E. Grade Challenge, finishing up in 2nd place. This Dehere X Forty Niner X Superlative(IRE) colt has 18 races under his belt with 6 wins. Lonesome River is currently ranked # 156 in the Turf Classic category. He only has two races as a 4 year old with his most encouraging race being his LTO in the Sussex Handicap (G3) where he was clipped by a nose at the wire while firing a 103 SP. Lonesome River will be the lead horse in the race. The only question is does he have the talent to hold off the closers? My bet is that he will make it interesting at the end. I think if he runs as he has so far this year, Lonesome River will make his case on the board somewhere. This is a very nice colt for the Oxymoron3 stable. Nice placement.

(PP7 – 70/1) Flower Of Scotland, of the Blacksoxuk stable, is another 3 year old colt. Although he has hit the board in 8 of 11 races he needs to be more vigorously tested, and maybe that is the reason for his entry here. Flower Of Scotland holds the # 160 Turf Classic ranking for 3 year olds, but this will be his first attempt at taking on the older competition. This One Cool Cat X Forty Niner X Seattle Slew entry is also running the longest race of his career. His longest race prior to today was at the 7 furlong distance. He has too much to prove to be of any competition here. He has fired better than some of the competition in this field, but he will need something special to hit the board here.

(PP8 – 49/1) Gunnar’s Gold(IRE), of the Chance stable, is another 3 year old colt. This Giant’s Causeway(IRE) X Thunder Gulch X Seattle Slew colt has won 4 of 12 career races and has hit the board in 5 of 7 routes. Gunnar’s Gold(IRE) is a three year old on the rise. His SP #s have been steadily increasing over his past few races. He is making his first attempt in a Graded Stakes race and his first run against older competition, but in order for his maturation process to progress I think the Chance stable is making a good move here. No, I don’t think Gunnar’s Gold(IRE) will compete here, but I think this race will help him out in the future. He has proven by his steady improvement that he needs to be tested, something some of the other long shots have yet to reach yet. Gunnar’s Gold(IRE) may try for the lead, but I don’t think he will get it here. He will fade as the race goes on, but he will learn as well.

(PP9 – 84/1) Sea All Star, of the Dvtka1 stable, is another 3 year old colt that joins the other long shots of the race. This Sahm X Lyphard X Seattle Slew colt has won 4 of 7 career races. He has also fired the best SP # of any of the other 3yo entries mentioned so far. In his LTO, Sea All Star fired a 91 SP, winning The Five River(IRE) Special, but today he takes on the older competition for the first time. He runs just off the pace, but unless he improves I just don’t think a 90’s SP does much in this field. He could be another 3 year old on the rise, but he will be battle tested in this one.

(PP10 – 5/1) Urko’s Danzig, of the Urko stable, is one of two 5 year old’s in the race. This Danzig X Storm Cat X Alydar horse is the # 56 ranked Turf Classic horse for the Older Horse category, with 129 stakes points under his belt. He has won 7 of 26 and hit the board in 21 of those 26 races. Urko’s Danzig has run in three Grade II races in his last three races with a win and place before falling off in his first race of 2006. He is very consistent with upper 90 SP #s and can also hit the 100 SP # plateau with ease. Running with this field, I would be amazed to see Urko’s Danzig not hitting the board in this one.

(PP11 – 4/1) Beyer Beware, of the Lenny271 stable, is the morning line favorite and claims my favorite name for the field. I love it!! This 4 year old colt is out of Dayjur X Distorted Humor X Troy(GB). He has won 6 of 20 races, has amassed earnings over $836,000 and is ranked # 29 in the Turf Classic category. In his last three races, Beyer Beware has been very consistent firing between a 107 and 109 SP #. He also won his LTO in The Saturday Night Special (G1). The interesting part of this race will be his closing on the field. Most closers begin to close at the third call, but Beyer Beware will run you down as he makes his move at the halfway point in the race. The class of the field, I can see why he is the morning line favorite. If I had to pick one to put my money on, this would clearly be the choice today.

(PP12 – 9/2) Jet Boy, of the Toppa1 stable, is the other 5 year old horse in the race. This Gold Carat X Brown Arc X Pretense 5 year old has 7 wins in 19 races and has hit the board in 11 of 19 races. He is currently ranked # 298 in the Turf Classic category. He consistently runs in the low 100 SP #s and that is why he has such low odds. He can be very dominant in the lower level stakes races, but he will be tested with a couple in this one. I think Jet Boy will be in the top five, but I am not sure how he will handle the heavy hitters in this one. He tends to run just off the pace. It all depends on if he has any left when the closers are making their move.

(PP13 – 71/1) Unpredictably T, of the Xtchamps stable, is a 3 year old colt with just enough earnings to be ranked, $44,047. This Western Fame X Point Given X Storm Cat colt has won only once in 11 races. He finished with a 2nd in his LTO at a low level stakes race with a small five horse field restricted to three year olds only, and he did fire a 91 SP # in that race. I think Xtchamps is rushing this colt. I think that Unpredictably T could potentially dominate or be very, very good in three year old company, but to run against older horses in only his third race as a 3 year old and to also move up to graded company is asking for too much too soon. Not a factor here.

(PP14 – 9/1) Sky Turn To Black, of the Fab19 stable, is a 4 year old Sky Mesa X Dixieland Band X Turn-To colt. He has won 7 of 21 and hit the board in 12 of 21 races. He is currently the # 105 ranked older horse Turf Classic category. He has won three lower level stakes races in his career, one of which was his LTO winning by three lengths. He has never finished in the top 5 in Graded Stakes company, but today could be his first. Sky Turn To Black doesn’t appear to be the most consistent horse of the field with SP #s jumping from the low 100s to the low 90s. I think if this colt finds consistency he could be one tough hombre. I look for a top 5 finish at best in this one.

Bigbaba

[2

post-1823","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
