The yielding turf and the full field seemed like huge obstacles for a closer to overcome. Indeed, through most of Saturday’s G1 Roy Higgins, it looked as if Tete The Undead(Aus)<\/b>, who had gone to the front right from the start, would lead the field across the finish line. And it would have happened that way, but for a small brown colt who came flying up the stretch as if he’d been shot from a rocket. It was New Storm<\/b>, from the EAAA Racing residency, and he ran the race of his life, scoring a personal best 113 speed figure and his first G1 win. And what a way to do it, in the Equinics, against a full 20-horse field and some of the top names in the division. The 4yo by Storm Cat jumped up to #7 in the turf classic division with this victory. Tete The Undead(Aus), running for Viking Racing, held on to win the silver with a 110 speed figure. Preferred Power<\/b>, who many handicappers, myself included, had tabbed as the most likely winner, rallied to earn a bronze for The CR Racers. His final speed figure was a 107.
